Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English-born Francis Asbury was one of the most important religious leaders in American history. Asbury single-handedly guided the creation of the American Methodist church, which became the largest Protestant denomination in nineteenth-century America, and laid the foundation of the Holiness and Pentecostal movements that flourish today. John Wigger has written the definitive biography of Asbury and, by extension, a revealing interpretation of the early years of the Methodist movement in America. Asbury emerges here as not merely an influential religious leader, but a fascinating character, who lived an extraordinary life. His cultural sensitivity was matched only by his ability to organize. His life of prayer and voluntary poverty were legendary, as was his generosity to the poor. He had a remarkable ability to connect with ordinary people, and he met with thousands of them as he crisscrossed the nation, riding more than one hundred and thirty thousand miles between his arrival in America in 1771 and his death in 1816. Indeed Wigger notes that Asbury was more recognized face-to-face than any other American of his day, including Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: β€œCan anything orthodox come from Pentecostalism?” This recasting of Nathaniel's familiar question from the Gospel is a fair summary of many modern Christians' assessment of the Pentecostal tradition. Yet in recent years, a growing number of Pentecostals have been turning afresh to the ancient, creedal Christian faith. Bishop Emilio Alvarez has himself been at the forefront of this movement. In Pentecostal Orthodoxy he introduces the phenomenon, and extends the project of paleo-orthodox ressourcement (associated with scholars such as Thomas Oden and Robert Webber) to include orthodox expressions within Pentecostalism, particularly his own Afro-Latino Pentecostal movement. This book is a manifesto of sorts, promising not only to open up the possibility of a genuinely orthodox Pentecostalism, but to reframe modern ecumenical dialogue as well.

Book excerpt: Francis Asbury, August 20, 1745 - March 31, 1816, was one of the first two bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church in the United States. As a young man in October 1771, the Englishman traveled to America and, during his 45 years there, he devoted his life to ministry, traveling on horseback and by carriage thousands of miles to those living on the frontier. Asbury spread Methodism in America, as part of the Second Great Awakening. He also founded several schools during his lifetime, although his own formal education was limited. His journal is valuable to scholars for its account of frontier society.

Book excerpt: The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits Foreword Children of outstanding parents often have difficulty being objective about the ones who gave them birth. There may be no greater illustration of this than the understanding of American Methodists about their founding father, Francis Asbury. His fate among his own people has been largely one of neglect. Yet he is one of the most important men in the history of the Christian church, particularly in the development of American Christianity.John Wesley sent Francis Asbury, a young man of 26, to the American colonies in 1771. At that time there were four Methodist preachers in the thirteen colonies caring for about three hundred people. By 1813, three years before Asbury's death, official Methodist records report 171,448 white and 42,850 African-American members "in full society." By that time, according to historian Mark Noll, one out of every eight Americans-some one million persons-were attending Methodist camp meetings each year. Noll continues by insisting that by 1860, Methodism had become "the most pervasive form of Christianity in the United States." Methodism, as no other single religious tradition, helped shape the character of American religious life. The key to it all was Francis Asbury. Yet his story is largely unknown, especially among his own spiritual children. Dennis F. Kinlaw, Founder Francis Asbury Society
