Book excerpt: Fourteen-year-old Cory Thompson is on his way to magic school with his father and sister. At his unbinding ceremony, the powers he receives make it apparent that he is the magical community’s new Titan. In an attempt to help Cory prepare for his future destiny, Professor Archer becomes his personal mentor. Due to a series of unfortunate incidents—some caused naturally and some intentionally by the Ancient Order of the Crones—Cory’s sister, Ashley, makes the biggest mistake of her life. Cory is the only person capable of saving Ashley from becoming an evil Crone forever, even if he is totally unprepared to fight. Armed with only three months of formal training and his pet bird, Indy, Cory attempts the impossible while surrounded by elves, witches, and warlocks. If he fails, the Crones will have gained far more than a new recruit. They will hold the key to both the magical community’s and humankind’s only hope for the future.

Book excerpt: Titan: Exploring an Earthlike World presents the most comprehensive description in book form of what is currently known about Titan, the largest satellite of the planet Saturn and arguably the most intriguing and mysterious world in the Solar System. Because of its resemblance to our own planet, Titan is often described as a OC frozen primitive EarthOCO and is therefore of wide interest to scientists and educated laypersons from a wide range of backgrounds. The book aims to cater to all of these by using nontechnical language wherever possible, while maintaining a high standard of scientific rigor. The book is a fully revised and extensively updated edition of Titan: The Earthlike Moon, which was published in 1999, before the Cassini and Huygens missions arrived to orbit Saturn and land on Titan. As investigators on these missions, the authors use the latest results to present the most recent revelations and latest surprises about an exciting new world.

With informed argument and provocative insights, DiSalvo shows how Blake’s view of history prefigures the revaluation of our own myths of origin prompted by new political, psychological, and feminist perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although Titan is similar in terms of mass and size to Jupiter's moons, Ganymede and Callisto, it is the only one harboring a massive atmosphere. Moreover, unlike the Jovian system populated with four large moons, Titan is the only large moon around Saturn. The other Saturnian moons are much smaller and have an average density at least 25% less that Titan's uncompressed density and much below the density expected for a Solar composition (Johnson and Lunine, 2005), although with a large variation from satellite to satellite. Both Jupiter's and Saturn's moon systems are thought to have formed in a disk around the growing giant planet. However, the difference in architecture between the two systems probably reflects different disk characteristics and evolution (e.g. Sasaki et al., 2010), and in the case of Saturn, possibly the catastrophic loss of one or more Titan-sized moons (Canup, 2010). Moreover, the presence of a massive atmosphere on Titan as well as the emission of gases from Enceladus' active south polar region (Waite et al., 2009) suggest that the primordial building blocks that comprise the Saturnian system were probably more volatile-rich than Jupiter's"--

A King is supposed to rule his Kingdom using any means necessary to demand respect.I'm not a weak man¿ A King kneels to no one.I've only ever cared about one other person in my life, but the thing is, she never belonged to me. And before I could tell her how I felt, she left. Now she's returned, needing someone to save her. Emilee York was always meant to be mine, and I'll see to it that happens. I always get what I want, even if that means I have to take it.And she's no different. She'll be my queen, one way or the other.EMILEEWhen I left Sin City behind me, I had no plans to return. I avoided everyone, even my friends, to stay in my bubble. I've always been the kind to pull away and run when things get difficult. But one phone call changed everything, and I was racing back. If only I had known what was waiting for me.Titan reappeared like a ghost haunting me. One look and I knew he recognized me. I never forgot him or what we shared. Those feelings that no one else knew existed between us.I ignored them back then, but now they are more intense than ever. "Get on your knees¿" He demanded I kneel for him.I tried to act like he didn't affect me, but he knew. He remembered the way I reacted when he would touch me. And just like he was taught to do-he used my weaknesses against me.He staked his claim, and I became his queen to use how he saw fit. What makes it worse is that I crave him, and when I kneeled, it was willingly. But was it for nothing?

Book excerpt: A reassessment of early Christian apocalypticism arguing that the texts are not so much myths about good versus evil as about divine politics and heroic submission Prevailing theories of apocalypticism assert that in a world that rebels against God, a cataclysmic battle between good and evil is needed to reassert God's dominion. Emma Wasserman, a rising scholar of early Christian history, challenges this interpretation and reframes these apocalyptic texts as myths about divine politics and heroic submission. A major scholarly contribution that ranges across Mediterranean and West Asian religious thought, this volume rethinks Paul's Christ-myth as well as his most distinctive ethical teachings.

This Jewish work was written in the Roman province of Asia sometime between 80 and 40 BCE. It offers insights into the political views of the author and his perception of the relation between Jews and non-Jews, especially in the field of religion and ethics. The present study consists of three parts: 1. introductory questions; 2. a literary analysis of the book, translation, and commentary; 3. the social setting of the book. It aims to further the scholarly use of the third Sibylline book and to improve our knowledge of early Judaism in its Graeco-Roman environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between ancient Greece and modern psyche lies a divide of not only three thousand years, but two cultures that are worlds apart in art, technology, economics and the accelerating flood of historical events. This unique collection of essays from an international selection of contributors offers compelling evidence for the natural connection and relevance of ancient myth to contemporary psyche, and emerges from the second 'Ancient Greece, Modern Psyche' conference held in Santorini, Greece, in 2012. This volume is a powerful homecoming for those seeking a living connection between the psyche of the ancients and our modern psyche. This book looks at eternal themes such as love, beauty, death, suicide, dreams, ancient Greek myths, the Homeric heroes and the stories of Demeter, Persephone, Apollo and Hermes as they connect with themes of the modern psyche. The contributors propose that that the link between them lies in the underlying archetypal patterns of human behaviour, emotion, image, thought, and memory. Ancient Greece, Modern Psyche: Archetypes Evolving makes clear that an essential part of deciphering our dilemmas resides in a familiarity with Western civilization's oldest stories about our origins, our suffering, and the meaning or meaninglessness in life. It will be of great interest to Jungian psychotherapists, academics and students as well as scholars of classics and mythology.

The largest satellite of the giant planet Saturn, Titan is itself larger than the planet Mercury, and is unique in being the only known moon with a thick atmosphere. In addition, its atmosphere bears a startling resemblance to the Earth's, but is much colder. The American and European space agencies, NASA and ESA, have recently combined efforts to send a huge robot spacecraft to orbit Saturn and land on Titan. This book provides the background to this, the greatest deep space venture of our time, and sets the scene for what may be found when the spacecraft arrives in 2004.
