Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of California: An Introduction to More Than Three Hundred Common Birds of the State and Adjacent Islands, With a Supplementary List of Rare Migrants, Accidental Visitants, and Hypothetical Subspecies In selecting these three hundred from the five hun dred varieties listed as occurring within the confines of the State and adjacent islands, no arbitrary rule has been followed, the author being guided by her own experience in field work among them. During a test study in 1902, the ground covered was from Mexico to Oregon, and from the islands off the coast to the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada; and in this, two hundred and forty odd species were commonly met with, while the others were by no means rare. The observations were made in the desert region along the California side of the Colorado River, and at Tia Juana, San Diego, Riverside, Redlands, Pasadena, San Pedro, Santa Cata lina, in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Palo Alto, Alviso, San Francisco Bay legion, Martinez, the Farallones, Mt. Tamalpais, Mt. Shasta, Sacramento, Slippery Ford, Lake Tahoe, Fallen Leaf Lake, Eagle Lake, and Lake Tulare. This list is given for the benefit of bird-loving tourists who may wish to do likewise. Abbott was the first ornithological collector to visit the Anamba Islands of the South China Sea. Accompanying him was Mr. C. Boden Kloss, who later published an account of the cruise with a nominal list of the birds of these islands.' This trip was made in the summer and autumn of 1899. During the summer of the following year Doctor Abbott again visited these islands. As one of the results of these two excursions Doctor Abbott sent back to the United States National Museum a collection of 212 birds, repro senting 44 species and subspecies, which has proved to be of much interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Danger of Introducing Noxious Animals and Birds Domesticated animals, like cultivated plants, may run wild and become so abundant as to be extremely injurious. Wild horses are said to have become so numerous in some parts of Australia that they consume the feed needed for sheep and other animals, and hunters are employed to shoot them. In some of the Western States they have also become a nuisance, and in Nevada a law was passed in 1897 per mitting wild horses to be shot. Recent reports from \vashington indicate that cayuses are considered of so little value that they are killed and used for bait in poisoning wolves and coyotes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A List of the Birds of Long Island, New York Long Island, New York, is about 120 miles long by from 8 to 18 miles broad, with a nearly straight coast-line on the south shore, along the ocean front, but broken on the north by the more or less abrupt indentures of Long Island Sound. Its general position is about parallel with the coast-line of the mainland, trending slightly northward from west to east. The north shore in general is abrupt and hilly, owing to a low range of hills termed the backbone of the island, which, in places along the Sound, form high, bold bluffs often 100 feet and more in height. The south shore fronts the Atlantic Ocean, forming an outlying beach separated, in great part, from the land by shallow bays and salt marshes. Except at its eastern extremity this beach is low and sandy, shifting somewhat year by year under the influence of the winds as well as by the action of the tides and waves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Birds of the Pacific Coast There are too many courses of study in the general school system that seize the child on his first day at school, place him in a school room high chair, and feed him ever after on books. All roads lead to the 'high chair. The schools should not wean the child from all large, active things, but rather should center or focus such upon the child continuously. The 'aim of this booklet and supplement is to create an interest in birds, toward the end of their protection, and to bring the children from the schoolroom to the living outdoors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Long Island The great expense attending works embellished with costly engravings, as well as the strictly scientific character of most works treating of Natural History, limits such subjects comparatively to the few. Frequent complaints of this nature have induced me to offer the present volume, with a view of placing within the reach of the "gunners," the means of becoming more thoroughly acquainted with the birds frequenting Long Island. The additions all departments of Natural History are continually receiving, is evidence, that with however much zeal and energy the different branches have been pursued, and notwithstanding the praiseworthy exertions bestowed by those who have distinguished themselves in their various pursuits, still we find their labors are not so far complete as to leave nothing for their successors. While the Botanist, Mineralogist, Entomologist, and Conchologist are enriching their cabinets, the Ornithologist is finding in our vast territory undescribed species. The "Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia," (1841, ) contains an article giving the views of Dr. Bachman, relative to the course our Naturalists should pursue in the publication of American species viz. that all north of the Tropic of Cancer twenty-three and a half degrees, should be called North America - the Tropics, Tropical or Central America - and south of the Tropic of Capricorn, South America." The large scope which our Zoology embraces, deters many persons from making collections, as they despair ever being able to complete them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of the Hawaiian Islands: Being a Complete List of the Birds of the Hawaiian Possessions, With Notes on Their Habits Of recent years the study of nature has become popular and widespread in America. Not only is Nature Study taught in many of the schools, but the publications relating thereto have become very numerous. Unfortunately these various treatises apply wholly or in large part to the birds, insects, animals and plants of 'the mainland, few or none of which are found in the Hawaiian Islands. Such publications are hence of comparatively little use to island teachers and pupils or to the Islanders generally. There being at present no popular work upon Hawaiian birds, the present little volume has been prepared with the view of break ing ground in this department, and with the hope that it may prove of assistance to those who are already bird - lovers and, as well, may stimulate others to become such. For superbly illustrated volumes upon Hawaiian birds the read er is referred to the fine works issued by Mr. Walter Rothschild and by Mr. Scott B. Wilson. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Notes Afield: A Series of Essays on the Birds of California My little book on the birds of California has been written, not for scientists but for those who wish to have an introduction to our familiar birds in their native haunts. If it persuades some few of its readers to go out of doors and look at nature with a more friendly and inquiring eye, its purpose will have been accomplished. That a certain skeleton of scientific classification should underlie the work has seemed necessary in order to convey to the uninitiated some inkling of the systematic grouping of the various species, but I have endeavored to subordinate the science to life wherever possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated and expanded A New Island Biogeography of the Sea of Cort'es, first published nearly 20 years ago, integrates new and broader studies encompassing more taxa and more complete island coverage. The present synthesis provides a basis for further research and exploration in upcoming years of the biologically fascinating Sea of Cort'es region. The Gulf region is increasingly being exploited, for its natural resources by way of marine fisheries, and for its stunning natural beauty by way of a burgeoning tourism industry. Further, the region's human population is increasing apace. It is appropriate, therefore, that this volume discusses these evolving circumstances, and the efforts of the Mexican government to regulate and manage them. The new Biogeography includes a section on the conservation issues in the Sea of Cort'es, past accomplishments and conservation needs as yet outstanding. This book should be of strong interest to conservation biologists, ecologists, and evolutionary biologists more generally.
