Jayant's vision is that of a compassionate liberal humanist. He is, in fact, the master of a rare brand of lyricism which does not underplay or soften urban angst, but accentuates it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethical Theory of Hegel: A Study of the Philosophy of Right Tins book was written for the most part before the war, and, save for a slight revision in the early part of 1915, is untouched by war influences In spite of the long delay which has ensued before publication, I have thought it better to leave my work as it stands. No doubt a very much better book could be written, but any alterations which I should be inclined to make at present would alter the purpose which the book is intended to serve. 'my intention was to write not on ethical and political theory but on Hegel, and. I have made no attempt to recast the Hegelian doctrine in the light of 'our present knowledge. A reconstruction of our modern problems and outlook on the basis of Hegel's teaching would be an exceedingly valuable contribution to knowledge, but it is a larger task than is attempted here. The first step toward it is a reasonable knowledge of the authentic Hegel himself, and it is only this step that I have tried to take. Much of the criticism of Hegel current to-day and in the last few years appears to be vitiated by an unsympathetic and somewhat inaccurate interpretation of Hegel, and my endeavour has been to provide an account which will make his view more intelligible. Accordingly criticism has been reduced to a minimum, and has been undertaken only when the comprehension of the theory itself seemed to demand it.' Nothing which I have seen since the book was first written has led me to alter my view of Hegel's teaching. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acarology is the study of mites and ticks. These damage crops in every possible way and are obstacle to our agricultural and economic development Damage to crops is perhaps the most costly economic effect of mites, especially by the spider mites and their relatives (Tetranychoidea), earth mites (Penthaleidae), thread-footed mites (Tarsonemidae) and the gall and rust mites (Eriophyidae). Currently there are strong environmental and economic incentives for adopting alternative practices for weed management, such a integrated weed management (IWM). Integrated weed management may provide a more sustainable approach to crop production, reducing the reliance on external inputs that characterizes conventional agriculture. The study of entomology can provide interesting clues into the history of life on Earth, and it can also be used to make projections about the future.

Book excerpt: What does the term 'ecologically sustainable development' mean? Everyone - governments, the business lobby, environmental groups - is in favour of it. But it seems to mean different things to different people. Is ESD the future we have to have? Is it a contradiction in terms? Or is it a green light for developers? Here is the second, up-to-date edition of a clear, comprehensive text that carefully examines the concept itself and the way it is used. Key issues dealt with at length include the relationship between the economy and the environment; the techniques of environmental valuation and pricing; the costs and benefits of regulation; local and global equity implications; the uses and limitations of technological solutions; and the roles of businesses, governments and consumers. The text is divided into five main sections, with acclaimed case studies at the end of each section dealing with mining, biological diversity, industrial waste in the ocean off NSW (Australia), the greenhouse effect, and the car.
