Book Synopsis A Field Guide to the Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific by : H. Douglas Pratt
Download or read book A Field Guide to the Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific written by H. Douglas Pratt and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first field guide to the identification of the birds of the islands of the tropical Pacific, including the Hawaiian Islands, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, southeastern Polynesia, and Micronesia. It is intended both as a reference for the expert and as an introduction to birding in the region for the novice. Small enough to be carried afield, it contains much previously unpublished information about behavior, vocalizations, ecology, and distribution. The forty-five color plates depict all plumages of all bird species that breed in the islands, as well as of those that regularly visit them and the surrounding oceans, and of most species believed to be extinct on the islands. Black-and-white figures show many of the rarer visitors. Introductory sections discuss the tropical Pacific as an environment for birds, problems of birding on islands, and bird conservation. Appendixes include maps of the island groups and a thorough bibliography.
Book Synopsis Birds of Southwest Pacific by : Ernst Mayr
Download or read book Birds of Southwest Pacific written by Ernst Mayr and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perfect for birdwatching enthusiasts travelling to Indonesia, this concise guide is full of interesting information. This practical handbook, by an acknowledged authority, intended primarily for the field student, tells him how to identify and name the birds of Indonesia which he encounters, and what kinds of birds he can expect to find on each island. There is also a condensed summary of the present knowledge of distribution, geographical variation and habits. Whenever feasible, keys have been supplied to facilitate identification. These keys are simply and clearly worked out for the beginner who may not know the difference between a curlew and a godwit, or a triller and a graybird. Three magnificent color plates show 39 species which include at least one representation of all of the prominent bird families of the southwest Pacific. A series of black and white drawings show additional species. These pictures will be particularly valuable to bird students who have never seen a wood swallow, a flower pecker, a white-eye or a triller.

Download or read book Tonga written by Martin Daly and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2009-02-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the first edition: "Tonga is unique among bibliographies in its perception and understanding, and in its affection for Tonga and its people. . . . Daly’s work stands on exceptionally sound foundations. . . . His summaries are excellent, indeed, but Daly writes always with the authority of first-hand knowledge, with a keen eye for the essential, and the ability to interpret and clarify obscurities. . . . A trustworthy introduction to Tonga in all its diversity, a splendid point de départ for all, layman or scholar, needing a reliable guide to the essential literature about this remarkable Polynesian kingdom." —Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies "The book is so arranged that it is easy to locate any of the items listed. . . . I found myself spending pleasant hours perusing Daly’s comments on the different publications.. . . I hope the rumor of a second, revised edition of this bibliography is true." —Journal of the Polynesian Society Tonga is a fascinating and subtle combination of a traditional Polynesian kingdom—the only one to survive the impact of colonization in the nineteenth century and remain independent—and a thoroughly Christian country. This comprehensive bibliography is a selective guide to the most significant and accessible English-language books, papers, and articles on every aspect of the kingdom’s history, culture, arts, politics, environment, and economy. It is a much updated and expanded edition of the original version that was published in 1999 as part of the World Bibliographical Series, with the addition of more than 200 new entries. Each of the approximately 600 described and annotated items is organized under broad subject headings, and indexed by author, title, and subject. In addition—and new to this edition—all known Ph.D. theses, although not annotated, are shown within their appropriate subject categories and indexed. Also new is a section on the most important Tonga-related websites. A general introduction describes the Tongan kingdom, its history and society, and its current situation. Tonga: A New Bibliography will be an invaluable resource for anyone with a serious interest in Tonga and an indispensable volume for academic libraries, reference collections, and policy makers focused on the Pacific islands.

Book Synopsis The Early Prehistory of Fiji by : Geoffrey Richard Clark
Download or read book The Early Prehistory of Fiji written by Geoffrey Richard Clark and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I enjoyed reading this volume. It is rare to see such a comprehensive report on hard data published these days, especially one so insightfully contextualised by the editors' introductory and concluding chapters. These scholars and the others involved in the work really know their stuff, and it shows. The editors connect the preoccupations of Pacific archaeologists with those of their colleagues working in other island regions and on "big questions" of colonisation, migration, interaction and patterns and processes of cultural change in hitherto-uninhabited environments. These sorts of outward-looking, big-picture contextual studies are invaluable, but all too often are missing from locally- and regionally-oriented writing, very much to its detriment. In sum, the work strongly advances our understanding of the early prehistory of Fiji through its well-integrated combination of original research and the reinterpretation of existing knowledge in the context of wider theoretical and historical concerns. In doing so The Early Prehistory of Fiji makes a truly substantial contribution to Pacific and archaeological scholarship. Professor Ian Lilley, The University of Queensland
