Book excerpt: Pioneer Families of Northwestern New Jersey originally appeared as a series of weekly articles in the Hackettstown Gazette beginning with the issue of February 16, 1934, and ran for ninety-four installments. Never widely available, the series nonetheless constitutes the single greatest stockpile of genealogical reference material available on northwestern New Jersey families. Mr. Thomas Wilson, publisher of Hunterdon House, assembled all ninety-four installments of Armstrong's Pioneers in book form in 1979, adding a complete name index to the more than 7,000 persons in the process. Clearfield Company is delighted to reprint the Hunterdon version in a limited edition paperback.
Book Synopsis The History of Ornithology in Virginia by : David W. Johnston
Download or read book The History of Ornithology in Virginia written by David W. Johnston and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Host to a large and diverse bird population as well as a long human history, Virginia is arguably the birthplace of ornithology in North America. David W. Johnston's History of Ornithology in Virginia, the result of over a decade of research, is the first book to address this fascinating element of the state's natural history. Tertiary-era fossils show that birds inhabited Virginia as early as 65 million years ago. Their first human observers were the region's many Indian tribes and, later, colonists on Roanoke Island and in Jamestown. Explorers pushing westward contributed further to the development of a conception of birds that was distinctively American. By the 1900s planter-farmers, naturalists, and government employees had amassed bird records from the Barrier Islands and the Dismal Swamp to the Blue Ridge and Appalachian Mountains. The modern era saw the emergence of ornithological organizations and game laws, as well as increasingly advanced studies of bird distribution, migration pathways, and breeding biology. Johnston shows us how ornithology in Virginia evolved from observations of wondrous creatures to a sophisticated science recognizing some 435 avian species. David W. Johnston taught ornithology at the University of Virginia's Mountain Lake Biological Station for nearly two decades and has edited numerous ecological studies as well as the Journal of Field Ornithology and Ornithological Monographs.

Book Synopsis Restoring North America's Birds by : Robert A. Askins
Download or read book Restoring North America's Birds written by Robert A. Askins and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIVThe decline of bird species in a wide range of North American habitats—forests, prairies, shrublands, mountain regions, marshes, and deserts—has inspired two decades of intense scientific study of bird ecology and conservation. But for professional scientists and amateur birders alike, interpreting the results of these diverse studies is often complex and bewildering. This accessible book pulls together recent research on bird species and habitats to show how basic ecological principles apply in seemingly different situations. Robert A. Askins provides an engaging introduction to bird ecology and concepts of landscape ecology, focusing on such intriguing species as Bachman’s Warbler, Red Crossbill, Mountain Plover, and Marbled Murrelet. Understanding the ancient landscapes of North America and how humans have changed them, Askins says, is essential for devising plans to protect and restore bird populations. In addition to such obvious changes to the landscape as the clearing of forests and plowing of prairies, more subtle changes also dramatically affect birds. Species may disappear when we interrupt natural disturbances by suppressing wildfires or trapping out beaver, or when we disrupt habitat with roads and housing developments. Askins challenges some of the assumptions that underlie current conservation efforts and offers concrete recommendations, based on sound ecological principles, for protecting the rich natural diversity of North America’s birds./div
