Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Bird Life MY purpose in writing these stories and sketches of birds has been that I might make others acquainted with the ways of some of the wild birds which have been of so much interest to me. Should they serve to give the reader a little more intimate ao quaintance with our feathered neighbors of the field and woodland, my main object will have been accomplished. These stories are not fanciful, but are true to bird life. The Arredondo Sparrow Hawk, ruffle-breast and Socrates were partien lar birds well known to others as to me. In the case of the Bob white family, and Bib-neck, the Plover, I have combined into the lives of a few birds incidents I have known to occur to many. The accounts of Visits to birds' nests, bird colonies and the like are given as they occurred. In the Appendixes some suggestions are offered to the student and the teacher. Person de siring to be generally informed on birds must secure several books. It is highly desirable that every citizen should be informed on the need of conserving bird life as one of our valu able national resources. It has been the purpose of the author to gather within one set of covers a brief discussion of the essential facts concerning bird life that are of general interest, which are now scattered through many books, bulletins, and magazines. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Life in Labrador In a book, sketch, or series of sketches, one of the last things to be written - and often one of the last to be printed - is the introduction. Why, then, it should be so invariably placed first is a question for the causalist. I shall vary the usual proceedings in such cases, and, writing my introduction last, shall both print and place it last. The subject of the present and last number of Bird Life in Labrador is very briefly stated. In 1875, the writer made a Summer excursion to Labrador, remaining there two months, traveling chiefly within a radius of sixty miles southwest and ten miles northeast of Bonne Esperance. In 1880, he visited the coast in September and remained until the following September, calling at nearly every harbor of importance from Mingan to Red Bay. In 1882, a third exploring party continued the work of the two previous trips, as far as Fox Harbor, St. Lewis Sound. Other trips to portions of these same grounds have been made, and much new material gained, but not beyond St. Lewis Sound, as above mentioned. When the sketches that have just appeared in the American Field were written, after returning from the trip in 1882, I had never seen any account whatever of the birds of this region, saving from occasional glimpses in odd volumes of the works of Audubon, and not all of these. I cannot, therefore, be charged with literary piracy, so often urged upon writers of any particular subject or region. To prove the above fact, I am prepared to take upon me the most solemn obligation that can be required of any author. I make this statement simply as a precautionary measure of self-protection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird-Life To compress the "Story of Bird-Life" within the limits of the present little work has been no easy task. The object aimed at has been to present the main features of bird-life in a general way. Hence it is hoped this volume may prove of interest to bird-lovers the world over, not because it contains information about the birds of any particular neighbourhood or country; but rather, because it serves as a guide to what should be looked for, and recorded, of the life-history of birds wherever they may be met with. Even dwellers in the sordid city have some material upon which they may exercise their powers of observation. Since there are no less than 13,000 known species of birds, it would have been courting failure, and wearisome in the extreme, to deal with individuals in detail! The present work then is a skeleton picture, which each can fill up as he may for himself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of Bird Life: A Year-Book of British Ornithology I have so arranged the present volume that the student may readily acquaint himself with what is going on among the birds during every month of the year. I make no pretensions to completeness; the subject is too vast and varied to be exhausted in a single volume. In many cases the dates given can of necessity only be approximate ones - an allowance of a few days either way must often be made for differ ences of latitude, state of the weather, and other local in uences.
