Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “A revelation . . . a book in the Caro mold, using Lady Bird, along with tapes and transcripts of her entire White House diary, to tell the history of America during the Johnson years.”—The New York Times The inspiration for the documentary film The Lady Bird Diaries, premiering November 13 on Hulu Perhaps the most underestimated First Lady of the twentieth century, Lady Bird Johnson was also one of the most powerful. In Lady Bird Johnson: Hiding in Plain Sight, Julia Sweig reveals how indispensable the First Lady was to Lyndon Johnson’s administration—which Lady Bird called “our” presidency. In addition to advising him through critical moments, she took on her own policy initiatives, including the most ambitious national environmental effort since Theodore Roosevelt and a virtually unknown initiative to desegregate access to public recreation and national parks in Washington, D.C. Where no presidential biographer has understood Lady Bird’s full impact, Julia Sweig is the first to draw substantially on her White House diaries and to place her center stage. In doing so, Sweig reveals a woman ahead of her time—and an accomplished strategist and politician in her own right. Winner of the Texas Book Award • Longlisted for the PEN/Jacqueline Bogard Weld Award

Book excerpt: Lady Bird Johnson, That's Who! is Tracy Nelson Maurer's lively picture book biography of Lady Bird Johnson, with a focus on her environmentalist passion and legacy as First Lady. Who fought to stop pollution? Who helped make America cleaner and greener? Lady Bird Johnson, That's Who! Claudia Alta Taylor was a lonely girl, shy as a butterfly growing up in Texas. She never dreamed she'd blossom into a visionary leader whose love for wildflowers, beautiful landscapes, and building community compelled her to lead the effort to combat pollution in the United States. A lifelong environmentalist, Lady Bird Johnson embraced her platform as First Lady to promote policy that beautified America’s roadways, waterways and parks, inspiring people to take pride in the places they live. With elements of women’s history, civics, and conservationism, this is a timely and informative picture book biography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • A modern classic of true crime, set in a most beguiling Southern city—now in a 30th anniversary edition with a new afterword by the author “Elegant and wicked . . . might be the first true-crime book that makes the reader want to book a bed and breakfast for an extended weekend at the scene of the crime.”—The New York Times Book Review Shots rang out in Savannah’s grandest mansion in the misty, early morning hours of May 2, 1981. Was it murder or self-defense? For nearly a decade, the shooting and its aftermath reverberated throughout this hauntingly beautiful city of moss-hung oaks and shaded squares. In this sharply observed, suspenseful, and witty narrative, John Berendt skillfully interweaves a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South with the unpredictable twists and turns of a landmark murder case. It is a spellbinding story peopled by a gallery of remarkable characters: the well-bred society ladies of the Married Woman’s Card Club; the turbulent young gigolo; the hapless recluse who owns a bottle of poison so powerful it could kill every man, woman, and child in Savannah; the aging and profane Southern belle who is the “soul of pampered self-absorption”; the uproariously funny drag queen; the acerbic and arrogant antiques dealer; the sweet-talking, piano-playing con artist; young people dancing the minuet at the black debutante ball; and Minerva, the voodoo priestess who works her magic in the graveyard at midnight. These and other Savannahians act as a Greek chorus, with Berendt revealing the alliances, hostilities, and intrigues that thrive in a town where everyone knows everyone else. Brilliantly conceived and masterfully written, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is a sublime and seductive reading experience.

Book excerpt: This book is the third in the series written by Gramma Golden to educate children and adults about their responsibility to help improve the health and well-being of upcoming generations. It is a coloring book conversation that raises awareness of childhood bullying and the need to encourage and practice kindness and healthy eating lifestyles. The story picks up from book two as Bird Lady arrives home from taking a vacation at the beach. While flying home, she finds her airplane seat and seatbelt to be a bit tight and uncomfortable as are her shoes. She attributes it to possibly eating too much food while on vacation and vows to do a much better job of choosing what to eat when she gets back home. The following day, she embarks on her grocery shopping trip with the intent to fill her cupboards, refrigerator and freezer with her favorite foods. Suddenly, through the mist of the water sprayer over the fresh vegetables in the supermarket, she sees the main characters of the book, her friends Mort and Ort Aahkamort. They are the colorful pair of birds who have taught her lessons before about gardening and caring for the environment. She is hopeful they might teach her this time about making better food choices. They all decide to go visit awhile in the coffee shop where Bird Lady confesses to them her seat, seatbelt and shoes all felt tight on the trip home. She also shared she had been bullied as a child and how she had been left out of many activities growing up. The remainder of the story revolves around their plan to help Bird Lady consider exercising more, practice wise shopping habits, eating healthy foods, and sharing her story about how bullying affected her. She realizes her desire is to teach children to treat others with kindness.

Book excerpt: Popular Maine columnist, author, and outdoor enthusiast George Smith confirms in his review that "Gramma Golden's very entertaining books were created to educate children and adults about things we can do to improve and protect our environment. I had a wonderful time last year reading the book to my 3 year old granddaughter" writes Smith. In this tender and fact-filled story, Bird Lady is the one being taught to recognize her careless gardening practices by none other than a pair of unusually attractive and vividly colorful birds, Mort and Ort Aahkamort. Sitting atop the weather-worn shed directly behind her, they were talking to one another in words Bird Lady could completely understand. At first, she is both startled and a bit fearful when the larger one in his gravelly voice begins to talk directly to her by saying "It's a great day for pulling weeds!" The lessons that follow throughout the rest of the story result in Bird Lady changing her gardening practices to help wildlife visitors in her gardens. Like the author, Bird Lady has a passion for birds, butterflies, flowers, plants and nature in general. As a result of the lessons Mort and Ort teach Bird Lady, children and adults alike reading this book will learn how to help birds, flowers, butterflies and insects thrive as they visit their own gardens.

Book excerpt: "A great environmental lesson in this new kids' coloring storybook" ~ George Smith Popular Maine columnist, author, and outdoor enthusiast George Smith confirms in his review that "Gramma Golden's very entertaining books were created to educate children and adults about things we can do to improve and protect our environment. I especially enjoyed Stephen Adams illustrations which kids can color. I'm sure my granddaughter is going to love that." This book is the second in the series written by Gramma Golden. In the previous book, Bird Lady was hopeful she would once more see her two colorful friends who taught her so many valuable lessons about gardening. The main characters in the series, Mort and Ort Aahkamort, suddenly surprise Bird Lady on a beautiful beach. While there, they teach her new lessons about harmful effects on marine wildlife and shorebirds caused by litter and plastics carelessly left scattered on the beach. Once Bird Lady learns about these harmful effects, she makes it her mission to educate others. You will meet two new characters, Pete the Pilot and Ebenezer, her giraffe walking stick, as they join her on her journey.

Book excerpt: A revealing biography of Lady Bird Johnson exposes startling insights into her marriage to Lyndon Baines Johnson—and her unexpectedly strong impact on his presidency. Long obscured by her husband’s shadow, Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson emerges in this first comprehensive biography as a figure of surprising influence and the centering force for LBJ, a man who suffered from extreme mood swings and desperately needed someone to help control his darker impulses. Expertly researched and written, Lady Bird draws from rare conversations with the former First Lady and from interviews with key members of Johnson’s inner circle of friends, family, and advisers. With chapters such as “Motherless Child,” “A Ten-Week Affair,” and “LBJ’s Midlife Crisis,” Lady Bird sheds light on Mrs. Johnson’s childhood, on her amazing acumen as a businesswoman, and on the central role she played in her husband’s life and political career. A vital link to the Kennedys during LBJ’s uneasy tenure as vice president and a voice of conscience on civil rights, Jan Jarboe Russell reveals Lady Bird as a political force. In this intimate portrait, Russell shows us the private Lady Bird—not only a passionate conservationist but a remarkable woman who greatly influenced her husband, his administration, and the country.
