Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mania or the Holy Spirit? That is the main question Christian Browne found himself asking 12 years after his first manic episode (recounted in Bipolar in Barbados: A Memoir of My First Manic Episode). Was my experience of God within me, the Holy Spirit, really God through and through? Was my experience of God purely biological? Was the Holy Spirit a chemical reaction in my brain? Or was the Holy Spirit a series of electrical signals flowing along synapses and neurons? When a series of unfortunate circumstances creates a shortage of lithium Christian finds himself lead on a spiritual journey which takes him halfway around the world and deeper into his faith than ever before. Recommended for anyone who has experienced profoundly powerful spiritual experiences during the course of their bipolar disorder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the brink of insanity Christian was a normal young man in his early twenties living a regular life in Toronto with a great job, until something unexpected happened when on vacation in Barbados. It was as if a bolt of lightning had struck his brain, changing it forever and completely altering his perception of reality. Bipolar in Barbados: A Memoir of My First Manic Episode is a personal recollection of the events leading up to an unknown illness which was later identified as Bipolar Type 1. “Something happened to me over the last few months, something I can't explain. I don't even know when exactly it happened. But the maddening question is why it happened, why it happened to me. Why do I only sleep 5 hrs at night? Why when I wake up is my mind racing? Why am I compelled to write it down and share it? Why would I do this knowing that it will piss people off, knowing that others will see this as me trying to get attention or seek some unknown ulterior motive? How long will this last? Will I ever go back to plain old boring fading into the background me? I had an experience, something that changed me (forever?) and all I've been trying to do is to share that with those closest to me. All you've heard about is all the happy go lucky stuff, and the pictures I send are all of good times, friends having fun, everyone smiling. What you don't see is me waking up in a basement all alone wondering why this is all happening. Sitting at a computer screen at 5am typing away till my fingers hurt not knowing why hoping, and praying for answers so that this would all make sense. I've never been so scared in my entire life. When I look in the mirror the face that looks back seem familiar but something about it is different. There's something in the eyes that's changed. Is it a holy fire? The fires of hell? Or something more tangible and real, the struggles of one on the brink of insanity? I don't know, and that's what scares the hell outta me, that basic innate human fear of the unknown. I was only hoping that my friends and family would be able to comfort me, guide me, do anything so I didn't feel so lost, confused and lonely.”

Book Synopsis The Return of Bipolarity in World Politics by : Øystein Tunsjø
Download or read book The Return of Bipolarity in World Politics written by Øystein Tunsjø and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the international system has been unipolar, centered on the United States. But the rise of China foreshadows a change in the distribution of power. Øystein Tunsjø shows that the international system is moving toward a U.S.-China standoff, bringing us back to bipolarity—a system in which no third power can challenge the top two. The Return of Bipolarity in World Politics surveys the new era of superpowers to argue that the combined effects of the narrowing power gap between China and the United States and the widening power gap between China and any third-ranking power portend a new bipolar system that will differ in crucial ways from that of the last century. Tunsjø expands Kenneth N. Waltz’s structural-realist theory to examine the new bipolarity within the context of geopolitics, which he calls “geostructural realism.” He considers how a new bipolar system will affect balancing and stability in U.S.-China relations, predicting that the new bipolarity will not be as prone to arms races as the previous era’s; that the risk of limited war between the two superpowers is likely to be higher in the coming bipolarity, especially since the two powers are primarily rivals at sea rather than on land; and that the superpowers are likely to be preoccupied with rivalry and conflict in East Asia instead of globally. Tunsjø presents a major challenge to how international relations understands superpowers in the twenty-first century.

Download or read book Marbles written by Ellen Forney and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cartoonist Ellen Forney explores the relationship between “crazy” and “creative” in this graphic memoir of her bipolar disorder, woven with stories of famous bipolar artists and writers. Shortly before her thirtieth birthday, Forney was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Flagrantly manic and terrified that medications would cause her to lose creativity, she began a years-long struggle to find mental stability while retaining her passions and creativity. Searching to make sense of the popular concept of the crazy artist, she finds inspiration from the lives and work of other artists and writers who suffered from mood disorders, including Vincent van Gogh, Georgia O’Keeffe, William Styron, and Sylvia Plath. She also researches the clinical aspects of bipolar disorder, including the strengths and limitations of various treatments and medications, and what studies tell us about the conundrum of attempting to “cure” an otherwise brilliant mind. Darkly funny and intensely personal, Forney’s memoir provides a visceral glimpse into the effects of a mood disorder on an artist’s work, as she shares her own story through bold black-and-white images and evocative prose.
Book Synopsis Marijuana and Madness by : David Castle
Download or read book Marijuana and Madness written by David Castle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-27 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the psychiatry and neuroscience of Cannabis sativa (marijuana), with particular emphasis on psychotic disorders. It outlines developments in our understanding of the human cannabinoid system, and links this knowledge to clinical and epidemiological facts about the impact of cannabis on mental health. Clinically focused chapters review not only the direct psychomimetic properties of cannabis, but also the impact consumption has on the courses of evolving or established mental illness such as schizophrenia. A number of controversial issues are critically explored, including whether a discrete 'cannabis psychosis' exists, and whether cannabis can actually cause schizophrenia. Effects of cannabis on mood, notably depression, are reviewed, as are its effects on cognition. This book will be of interest to all members of the mental health team, as well as to neuroscientists and those involved in drug and alcohol research.
Book Synopsis Igniting the Caribbean's Past by : Bonham C. Richardson
Download or read book Igniting the Caribbean's Past written by Bonham C. Richardson and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2005-12-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike the earthquakes and hurricanes that have influenced Caribbean history, the region's fires have almost always been caused by humans. Geographer Bonham C. Richardson explores the effects of fire in the social and ecological history of the British Lesser Antilles, from the British Virgin Islands south to Trinidad. Focusing on the late nineteenth century, leading to the 1905 withdrawal of British military forces from the region, Richardson shows how fire-lit social upheavals served as forerunners of political independence movements. Drawing on Caribbean and London archives as well as years of fieldwork, Richardson examines how villagers used, modified, and contemplated fire in part to vent their frustrations with a savage economic depression and social and political inequities imposed from afar. He examines fire in all its forms, from protest torches to sugarcane fires that threatened the islands' economic staple. Richardson illuminates a neglected period in Caribbean history by showing how local uses of fire have been catalysts and even causes of important changes in the region.

Book Synopsis The Quest for Security in the Caribbean by : Ivelaw L. Griffith
Download or read book The Quest for Security in the Caribbean written by Ivelaw L. Griffith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive work on security in the English-speaking Caribbean, offers a wealth of information about the history, politics, economics and geography of the entire region. The author examines security problems in the region as a geopolitical unit, not on a selective case-study basis, as is usually done. He assesses Caribbean security within a theoretical framework where four factors are critical: perceptions of the political elites; capabilities of the states; the geopolitics of the area; and the ideological orientations of the parties in power. Political and economic issues are judged to be as relevant to security as military factors. The author identifies safeguards which countries in the region may take in the coming decade.
