This book offers a strikingly novel perspective on traditional and contemporary Judaic practices. For those with some Judaic knowledge, there are biological explanations in these chapters not seen elsewhere. For those well-versed in evolutionary theory, the authors' perspectives suggest new approaches to the scientific study of religion. Topics include the monistic tendency, biblical polygyny, biblical family conflict, circumcision and proselytes, sacrificial-ritualistic mitzvot (obligations), periodic conjugal separation, Judaic traditionalism, male and female reproductive strategies, and the relationship between costly signaling and prestige.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the argument that religious traditions are inherently environmentally friendly. Yet in a developing country such as India, the majority of people cannot afford to put the 'Earth first' regardless of the extent to which this idea can be supported by their religious traditions. Does this mean that the linking of religion and environmental concerns is a strategy more suited to contexts where people have a level of material security that enables them to think and act like environmentalists? This question is approached through a series of case studies from Britain and India. The book concludes that there is a tension between the 'romantic' ecological discourse common among many western activists and scholars, and a more pragmatic approach, which is often found in India. The adoption of environmental causes by the Hindu Right in India makes it difficult to distinguish genuine concern for the environment from the broader politics surrounding the idea of a Hindu rashtra (nation). This raises a further level of analysis, which has not been provided in other studies.

The prime notations use cosmological (e.g. singularities), atomic evolution (e.g. quarks to iron) and galactic evolution (e.g. biosphere development). The formation of introspective entities in biospheres lends itself to recognition of variation in individuals and environments. Thus imperfections and overt needs of assistance are generated. These individuals (unfortunates) and situations need to be corrected by other individuals (fortunates) The terms unfortunate and fortunate being relativistic. Also discussed in bio-philosophical terms are a variety of aspects related to the cancer problems. Biochemical and molecular biological mechanisms are devised. In conclusion the reason for reality is to give an opportunity to help unfortunates.

Book excerpt: ". provides timeless wisdom in extremely practical steps. It unlocks the doors to a more healthy, peace-filled life. A powerful book!" Harold G. Koenig, M.D. One of the world's leading authorities on spirituality and health "If widely accepted . its positive consequences for the world we live in could be groundbreaking." Dr. Marianne Friedrich Saul Bellow Scholar "Well-written and well-researched." Joanna V. Hill Director of Publications, The Templeton Foundation Press Finding the true God inside us for the future as personal responsibility, initiative, accountability, and principle. Change is inexorable, creating opportunity crises best managed through process theology. God must be truthful-without truth, full life, love, justice and virtue cannot exist. Science and religion must marry, not quarrel. They are opposite sides of the same gold coin. Why do prophets succeed where priests fail? God is absolute, though morals and ethics may be relativistic. Biotheology teaches us ecological humility and awareness. Managing evil by restoring living units to wellness through rehabilitation of people, groups and societies. Issues and questions outlast answers, leading us in the future to more sophisticated answers through science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology addresses the topic of "fundamentalism and gender" from inter- and trans-disciplinary perspectives. By referring to three major themes--"Literalism, Religion, and Science," "Nation, State, and Community," and "Body, Life, and Biopolitics"--the book focuses on the analytical diversification of the term "fundamentalism" and on intersections between religion, gender, sexuality, race, and nation. International scholars in cultural history and theory, religious studies, Christian theologies, Islamic studies, history, social sciences, anthropology, comparative literature, and women and gender studies examine the historical and current specifics of religious as well as of secular forms of fundamentalism. They also take a critical look at the Western discourse about religious fundamentalism and the ambivalent role feminism plays in this context, considering questions such as, Why do all religious fundamentalisms claim normalizing definitions of sexuality, gender roles, and intergender relations? In what way do gender and sexual politics play a role in secular criticism of religious fundamentalism? And how are forms of secular fundamentalism characterized by gender constructs and sexual politics?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts forward a new epistemological framework for a theory of religion and gender’s role in the public sphere. It provides a sophisticated understanding of gender and its relation to religion as a primarily performative category of knowledge production, rooting that understanding in case studies from around the world. Gender and religion are examined alongside biopolitics and the influence of capitalism, neoliberalism and empire. The book analyses the interdependence of religion, gender and new nationalisms in the Palestinian territories, South Africa and the USA, scrutinising the biopolitical interferences of nation states and dominant political and religious institutions. It then moves on to uncover counter-discourses and spaces of activism and agency in contexts such as East Germany and the Occupy Wall Street movement. Using gender, queer and trans theory in tandem with postcolonial and post-secular perspectives, readers are shown a more nuanced understanding of critical contemporary questions related to religion, gender and sexuality. This is a bold new take on religion, gender and public life. As such, it will be of keen interest to scholars of Religious Studies and Gender Studies, as well as those working on religion’s interaction with Politics, Sociology and Social Activism.

Book excerpt: Forged at the intersection of intense interest in the pertinence and uses of biopolitics and biopower, this volume analyzes theoretical and practical paradigms for understanding and challenging the socioeconomic determinations of life and death in contemporary capitalism. Its contributors offer a series of trenchant interdisciplinary critiques, each one taking on both the specific dimensions of biopolitics and the deeper genealogies of cultural logic and structure that crucially inform its impress. New ways to think about biopolitics as an explanatory model are offered, and the subject of bios (life, ways of life) itself is taken into innovative theoretical possibilities. On the one hand, biopolitics is addressed in terms of its contributions to forms and divisions of knowledge; on the other, its capacity for reformulation is assessed before the most pressing concerns of contemporary living. It is a must read for anyone concerned with the study of bios in its theoretical profusions.

Book excerpt: In 1990 the Worldwatch Institute in Washington estimated that humankind had forty years to make the transition to an environmentally stable society. If we have not succeeded by then, it concluded, environmental deterioration and economic decline are likley to be feeding on each other, pulling us into a downward spiral of social disintegration. Worldwatch is no millenarian cult, but a sober and careful organisation whose annual summaries of world affairs have become the planet's unofficial environmental health reports. Its pronouncements are cautiously worded, influential and worth attnedning to, even if the timing is hard to predict. This book uses the issues raised in these reports to look at biology, the envrinomental crisis and theological response to it all by developing a new theology of creation. Based on her scientific background in the bilogical sciences, King brings together biology and theology. It covers sciecne, religion and environment, human nature and develops a theology of creation. The author teaches at the University of Waikato in New Zealand.

Book excerpt: This book challenges the unchallenged methods in medicine, such as "evidence-based medicine," which claim to be, but often are not, scientific. It completes medical care by adding the comprehensive humanistic perspectives and philosophy of medicine. No specific or absolute recommendations are given regarding medical treatment, moral approaches, or legal advice. Given rather is discussion about each issue involved and the strongest arguments indicated. Each argument is subject to further critical analysis. This is the same position as with any philosophical, medical or scientific view. The argument that decision-making in medicine is inadequate unless grounded on a philosophy of medicine is not meant to include all of philosophy and every philosopher. On the contrary, it includes only sound, practical and humanistic philosophy and philosophers who are creative and critical thinkers and who have concerned themselves with the topics relevant to medicine. These would be those philosophers who engage in practical philosophy, such as the pragmatists, humanists, naturalists, and ordinary-language philosophers. A new definition of our own philosophy of life emerges and it is necessary to have one. Good lifestyle no longer means just abstaining from cigarettes, alcohol and getting exercise. It also means living a holistic life, which includes all of one's thinking, personality and actions. This book also includes new ways of thinking. In this regard the "Metaphorical Method" is explained, used, and exemplified in depth, for example in the chapters on care, egoism and altruism, letting die, etc.
