Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For too long, biomechanical research workers and clinicians have been considering the same problems, but looking at them from different viewpoints and failing to make use of each other's knowledge and skill. This book integrates these two areas, showing researchers how to keep their work clinically relevant while demonstrating the value of modern methods of measurement in clinical practice. The contributors, all leaders in one or both of these fields, cover fracture management, shape measurement, soft tissues and the spine, and the upper and lower limbs. This book will be of great interest to bioengineers engaged in research or clinical work, rehabilitation engineers, orthopedic surgeons, and clinicians specializing in orthopedics, rheumatology, and rehabilitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides state-of-the-art and up-to-date discussions on the pathology-related considerations and implications in the field of orthopaedic biomechanics. It presents fundamental engineering and mechanical theories concerning the biomechanics of orthopaedic and anatomical structures, and explores the biological and mechanical features that influence or modify the biomechanics of these structures. It also addresses clinically relevant biomechanical issues with a focus on diagnosis, injury, prevention and treatment. The first 12 chapters of the book provide a detailed review of the principles of orthopaedic biomechanics in the musculoskeletal system, including cartilage, bone, muscles and tendon, ligament, and multiple joints. Each chapter also covers important biomechanical concepts relevant to surgical and clinical practice. The remaining chapters examines clinically relevant trauma and injury challenges in the field, including diagnostic techniques such as movement analysis and rehabilitation intervention. Lastly it describes advanced considerations and approaches for fracture fixation, implant design, and biomaterials.

Book excerpt: Gait Analysis: An Introduction focuses on the systematic study of human walking and its contributions in the medical management of diseases affecting the locomotor system. The book first covers normal gait and pathological gait. Discussions focus on common pathologies affecting gait, amputee gait, walking aids, particular gait abnormalities, gait in the elderly and the young, moments of force, energy consumption, gait cycle, muscular activity during gait, and optimization of energy usage. The manuscript then elaborates on the methods of gait analysis, including visual gait analysis, general gait parameters, timing the gait cycle, direct motion measurement systems, electrogoniometers, electromyography, accelerometers, gyroscopes, and force platforms. The publication tackles the applications of gait analysis, as well as clinical gait and scientific gait analysis, normal ranges for gait parameters, conversions between measurement units, and computer program for general gait parameters. The manuscript is a valuable source of data for students of physical therapy, bioengineering, orthopedics, rheumatology, neurology, and rehabilitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although we now have sophisticated algorithms and techniques for determining the shapes and sizes and for matching the fit between shoes and feet, few, if any, of the books currently available cover these new technologies until now. Bringing together high-quality and state-of-the-art contributions from designers, biomechanists, ergonomists, engineers, podiatrists, and scientists from industry and academia, The Science of Footwear provides an in-depth understanding of the technology and techniques involved in the design and development of a popular and demanding consumer product. This book introduces the design, development, manufacturing, and marketing of footwear. The chapters contain data from past research and the state-of-the art methodologies. They not only cover every aspect of the product design, but also how the footwear industry caters to the wide-ranging needs of sophisticated and demanding customers. The footwear industry has rapidly changed over the last 10 years. Mass production has changed to personalization and mass customization, areas that are not well-understood. This book explores these different concepts in a coherent way, drawing on differing views that give a holistic view of the science behind footwear. Collating information from different disciplines, the book provides the tools to develop the next generation of footwear.

Book excerpt: Back in September of 1974, I acquired much valuable information while attending the International Conference on Total Knee Replacement in London, which was organized by The Medical Engineering Working Party and the Tribology Group of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the British Orthopaedic Association. I was greatly inspired by the conference, and it formed the beginning of my studies on total knee replacement. The co-editors of this proceedings, Prof. J. Paul and Dr. S. Yamamoto, are both acquaintances made originally at that conference. The International Symposium on Total Knee Replacement held in Nagoya, Japan, on 18-19 May 1987 was attended by many participants, including Prof. Walker, who had presented his studies earlier in London. During the past decade and a half, remarkable technical progress has been made in total knee prostheses. In this symposium, cemented total knee replacement (TKR), noncemented TKR, design considerations of total knee prostheses, problems concerning the patello femoral joint, and the newly developed total knee prosthesis were the main topics discussed. I believe that much new information, including that about the challenges which still remain, along with a fresh view towards continuing studies, are presented here for the reader. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the support of the Knee Joint Research Society in Japan and to the participants in the symposium for their great help in publishing this book.
