Book Synopsis Biomarkers in Periodontal Health and Disease by : Nurcan Buduneli
Download or read book Biomarkers in Periodontal Health and Disease written by Nurcan Buduneli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-31 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines all aspects of the progress being made towards the development of highly specific and sensitive biomarkers that will overcome the shortcomings of clinical assessments in periodontics. The opening chapters present the basic anatomic features of periodontal tissues, outline the nature and pathogenic mechanisms of periodontal diseases, and discuss both conventional and novel methods of diagnosis with reference to their specificity and sensitivity. The potential role of biomarkers in periodontal diagnosis is then presented in the light of the published data. The biological samples in which potential biomarkers are sought are evaluated comparatively, drawing attention to their strengths and weaknesses, and the available technologies for biomarker studies are reviewed. The potential benefits of biomarkers are also discussed with regard to the possible bidirectional interactions between periodontal diseases and systemic health. Finally, the past, present, and future of periodontics are examined from a broader perspective. Readers will find the book to be an ideal summary of the state of the art in the field as biomarkers emerge that promise to facilitate periodontal diagnostics and permit timely, personally tailored interventions.

Book Synopsis Use of Saliva in Diagnosis of Periodontitis: Cumulative Use of Bacterial and Host-Derived Biomarkers by : Ulvi Kahraman Gürsoy
Download or read book Use of Saliva in Diagnosis of Periodontitis: Cumulative Use of Bacterial and Host-Derived Biomarkers written by Ulvi Kahraman Gürsoy and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periodontitis is an infection-induced inflammatory disease of the tooth supporting tissues. Treatment of periodontal diseases and regeneration of the effected tissues can be possible only in the early diagnosis of the disease. If left undiagnosed or untreated, periodontitis leads to irreversible soft and hard tissue destruction and finally to tooth loss. Saliva is known to contain inflammatory mediators, host tissue and cell degradation products as well as microbial metabolites and enzymes, reflecting the health status of the oral cavity. In this topic, in collaboration with the well-known scientists working on the field of salivary diagnostics, we demonstrate evidence on monitoring periodontitis by salivary analysis.

We wish the array of chapters that highlights the importance and impact of periodontal health could be a useful guide for the community of public, students, and clinicians.
Book Synopsis Interleukin-18 in Periodontal Health and Disease by : Parag Hadge
Download or read book Interleukin-18 in Periodontal Health and Disease written by Parag Hadge and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interleukin (IL) - 18 may be one of the cytokines responsible for initiation and progression of periodontal destruction. IL-18 concentration in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and serum increases proportionally with the progression of periodontal disease. Periodontal inflammation may not successfully resolve because of accumulation of IL-18.Periodontal inflammation may not successfully resolve because of accumulation of IL-18. Further, the treatment aimed at arresting periodontal disease progression resulted in statistically significant reduction in the levels of IL-18 both in GCF and serum proportionally. It is very probable that the relatively high levels of IL-18 in GCF in periodontal disease signify it as an important factor in periodontal destruction. Thus, it can be considered as an inflammatory biomarker for periodontal disease and deserves further considerations in the development of preventive and therapeutic methods for treating periodontal disease.
Book Synopsis Glutathione System and Oxidative Stress in Health and Disease by :
Download or read book Glutathione System and Oxidative Stress in Health and Disease written by and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defenses determines a state known as oxidative stress. Higher levels of pro-oxidants compared to antioxidant defenses may generate oxidative damage, which, in turn, may lead to modifications in cellular proteins, lipids, and DNA, reducing functional capacity and increasing the risk of diseases. Nevertheless, the clearance of harmful reactive chemical species is achieved by the antioxidant defense systems. These protection systems are referred to as the first and second lines of defense and comprise the classic antioxidants, enzymatic and nonenzymatic defenses, including glutathione. This book presents and discusses the advancement of research on health and diseases and their underlying mechanisms, exploring mainly aspects related to the glutathione antioxidant system.

Book Synopsis General Methods in Biomarker Research and their Applications by : Victor R. Preedy
Download or read book General Methods in Biomarker Research and their Applications written by Victor R. Preedy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade there has been a major sea change in the way disease is diagnosed and investigated due to the advent of high throughput technologies, such as microarrays, lab on a chip, proteomics, genomics, lipomics, metabolomics etc. These advances have enabled the discovery of new and novel markers of disease relating to autoimmune disorders, cancers, endocrine diseases, genetic disorders, sensory damage, intestinal diseases etc. In many instances these developments have gone hand in hand with the discovery of biomarkers elucidated via traditional or conventional methods, such as histopathology or clinical biochemistry. Together with microprocessor-based data analysis, advanced statistics and bioinformatics these markers have been used to identify individuals with active disease or pathology as well as those who are refractory or have distinguishing pathologies. New analytical methods that have been used to identify markers of disease and is suggested that there may be as many as 40 different platforms. Unfortunately techniques and methods have not been readily transferable to other disease states and sometimes diagnosis still relies on single analytes rather than a cohort of markers. There is thus a demand for a comprehensive and focused evidenced-based text and scientific literature that addresses these issues. Hence the formulation of Biomarkers in Disease. The series covers a wide number of areas including for example, nutrition, cancer, endocrinology, cardiology, addictions, immunology, birth defects, genetics and so on. The chapters are written by national or international experts and specialists.

Book Synopsis Diagnostic Biomarkers in Periodontics by : Rajveer Kaur
Download or read book Diagnostic Biomarkers in Periodontics written by Rajveer Kaur and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periodontitis is a disease characterized by loss of connective tissue attachment and bone around the teeth in conjunction with the formation of periodontal pockets due to the apical migration of the junctional epithelium. Early diagnosis and treatment of progressive periodontitis is important because of the irreversible nature of this disease. Clinical measurements used in diagnosis of periodontal diseases are often of limited usefulness in that they are indications of previous periodontal disease rather than the present disease activity. Diagnostic biomarkers in oral fluids like saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) are highly beneficial in the determination of current periodontal status. These substances known as biomarkers help in determination of inflammatory mediator levels.

Book Synopsis Monitoring Metabolic Status by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book Monitoring Metabolic Status written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-08-29 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. military's concerns about the individual combat service member's ability to avoid performance degradation, in conjunction with the need to maintain both mental and physical capabilities in highly stressful situations, have led to and interest in developing methods by which commanders can monitor the status of the combat service members in the field. This report examines appropriate biological markers, monitoring technologies currently available and in need of development, and appropriate algorithms to interpret the data obtained in order to provide information for command decisions relative to the physiological "readiness" of each combat service member. More specifically, this report also provides responses to questions posed by the military relative to monitoring the metabolic regulation during prolonged, exhaustive efforts, where nutrition/hydration and repair mechanisms may be mismatched to intakes and rest, or where specific metabolic derangements are present.
