Book excerpt: In the last decade, great advances have been made in fundamental research and in the applications of bioluminescence and chemiluminescence. These techniques have become vital tools for laboratory analysis. Bioluminescence imaging has emerged as a powerful new optical imaging technique, offering real-time monitoring of spatial and temporal progression of biological processes in living animals. Bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) methodology has also emerged as a powerful technique for the study of protein-protein interactions. Luciferase reporter gene technology facilitates monitoring of gene expression and is used to probe molecular mechanisms in the regulation of gene expression. Chemiluminescence detection and analysis have also found diverse applications in life science research; for example, chemiluminescent labels and substrates are now widely used in immunoassay and nucleic acid probe-based assays. The latest advances in this exciting field, from fundamental research to cutting-edge applications, are explored in this most recent volume of the biannual symposium series, the Proceedings of the 15th International Symposium on Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence. The volume highlights advances in fundamental knowledge of luciferase-based bioluminescence, photoprotein-based bioluminescence, fundamental aspects and applications of chemiluminescence, luminescence imaging, fluorescence quantum dots and other inorganic fluorescent materials, phosphorescence and ultraweak luminescence, and instrumentation for measurement and imaging of luminescence.

Book excerpt: The field of the ecology of vision has grown considerably since John Lythgoe first wrote his original book on the subject in 1979. John Lythgoe was instrumental in founding the subject that has inspired vision researchers to relate the functioning of the visual system with the visual requirements demanded by the environment and behaviour of the animal in it. This book represents a timely and much needed review of the wealth of research that has been carried out in the last twenty years. It deals with theoretical and physical considerations of light and photoreception, practical examples of visual system structure and function and aspects of visual behaviour and communication. Importantly, the book emphasises one of the main themes to have emerged from studies of the ecology of vision: that the visual system is extremely adaptable when confronted with changing environmental and behavioural conditions. Finally, this updated review is a multi-author collection of leading experts currently working in the field of visual ecology, a requirement that reflects the high level of current research activity. The book approaches the visual system from many different areas of biology including neurobiology, sensory biology, cellular biology and behavioural biology. Consequently, the book will be of interest to workers both within and outside the field of vision research and also to undergraduate and graduate students interested in vision.

Book excerpt: Since the publication of Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence, Part B, genes have been cloned that encode luciferases from an array of bioluminescent organisms, novel applications of these genes have been developed, and much has been learned of the fundamental chemistry, biochemistry, structural biology, and biophysics of these intriguing enzymes. New strategies for application of chemiluminescence technology have been developed and refined, promising to further reduce the need to use radioisotopes in basic research and clinical laboratory settings. Methods for detection of low levels of light continue to push the limits of detection, allowing ready monitoring in real time of intricate subcellular processes within living cells. This book affords a glimpse of the state of the art of a rapidly advancing field, and presents to users of these methods a detailed reference of current activities in the field. The critically acclaimed laboratory standard for more than forty years, Methods in Enzymology is one of the most highly respected publications in the field of biochemistry. Since 1955, each volume has been eagerly awaited, frequently consulted, and praised by researchers and reviewers alike. Now with more than 300 volumes (all of them still in print), the series contains much material still relevant today--truly an essential publication for researchers in all fields of life sciences. - Outlines the use of luminescent reporter technologies to monitor gene expression and protein trafficking - Describes the luminescence-based clinical assay technologies - Details the basic biochemistry, biophysics, and chemistry of light-emitting reactions that are critical for applications - Includes explanations of the instrumentation used for detection and quantification of low level light - Shows the new applications of luminescence-based technologies that result largely from broad advances in recombinant DNA technologies and nonscale methods

Book excerpt: Biotechnology is advancing at a rapid pace with numerous applications in medicine, industry, agriculture and environmental remediation. Recognizing this, government, industrial and academic research and development invest ment in biotechnology has expanded rapidly. The past decade has seen the emergence of applications of this technology with a dual-use potential. Mili tary applications focus on four major areas: biomedical technology, such as vaccine development and medical diagnostics; detection of toxins, chemicals and pathogens; material biotechnology; and biological decontamination, in cluding biodegradation and bioremediation. This conference emphasizes the non-medical applications of biotechnol ogy. The first two sessions focus on the synthesis and properties of molecules that may be used in detectors. The traditional approach to detection of chemical and biological agents relied on the development of specific assays or analyses for known agents. Advances in molecular biology have made possible the production of large quantities of toxins which were previously available in minute quantities, and the molecular engineering of toxins and pathogens with specific pharmacologic and physical-chemical properties. In addition to the traditional approaches to detection of specific known compounds, biotechnology now offers generic approaches to detection. Physiological targets, known as receptors, are primary targets for many drugs and toxins. Similarly, pathogens rely on receptors to gain access to cells. These receptors function as sensitive detectors, generating signals which are transduced and amplified.
