Book Synopsis Principles of Regenerative Biology by : Bruce M. Carlson
Download or read book Principles of Regenerative Biology written by Bruce M. Carlson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the explosion of knowledge from molecular biology and the burgeoning interest in generating or regenerating tissues or organs through various bioengineering or stem cell approaches, many scientists and students have shown a renewed interest in the phenomenon of regeneration. Because relatively few have had the luxury of being able to approach the phenomenon of regeneration from a broad biological perspective, Dr. Carlson has produced a book that outlines the fundamental principles of regeneration biology. Subject matters focus principally on regeneration in vertebrate systems, but also invertebrate regeneration. In order to manipulate regenerative processes, it is important to understand the underlying principles of regeneration. Principles of Regnerative Biology is the key introductory reference for all developmental biologists, geneticists, and tissue and stem cell researchers. Creates a general understanding of one of the most fascinating and complex phenomena in biology Discusses the ability and diversity of regeneration in various organisms Explains the history and origins of cells in regenerating systems Includes information on stem cells and its important role in regeneration

Book Synopsis Form and Transformation by : Gerry Webster
Download or read book Form and Transformation written by Gerry Webster and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-11-13 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection fails to explain the forms of organisms because it focuses on inheritance and survival, not on how organisms are generated. The first part of this 2007 book (by Gerry Webster) looks critically of the conceptual structure of Darwinism and describes the limitation of the theory of evolution as a comprehensive biological theory, arguing that a theory of biological form is needed to understand the structure of organisms and their transformations as revealed in taxonomy. The second part of the book (by Brian Goodwin) explores such a theory in terms of organisms as developing and transforming dynamic systems, within which gene action is to be understood. A number of specific examples, including tetrapod limb formation and Drosophila development, are used to illustrate how these hierarchically-organized dynamic fields undergo robust symmetry-breaking cascades to produce generic forms.

Book Synopsis Systems Biology by : Lilia Alberghina
Download or read book Systems Biology written by Lilia Alberghina and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-10-04 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For life to be understood and disease to become manageable, the wealth of postgenomic data now needs to be made dynamic. This development requires systems biology, integrating computational models for cells and organisms in health and disease; quantitative experiments (high-throughput, genome-wide, living cell, in silico); and new concepts and principles concerning interactions. This book defines the new field of systems biology and discusses the most efficient experimental and computational strategies. The benefits for industry, such as the new network-based drug-target design validation, and testing, are also presented.

Book Synopsis Cell Chemistry and Physiology: by : Edward Bittar
Download or read book Cell Chemistry and Physiology: written by Edward Bittar and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-05-14 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume illustrates the extent to which the traditional distinction between biochemical and physiological processes is being obliterated by molecular biology. It can hardly be doubted that the revolution in cell and molecular biology is leading to core knowledge that provides an outline of the integrative and reductionist approach. We view this as the beginning of a new era, that of the integration of learning. As in the preceding volumes, the choice of topics has been deliberate not only because of the need to keep the volume within reasonable bounds but also because of the need to avoid information over-load. Several relevant topics are dealt with in other modules; for example, the role of G proteins in transmembrane signalling is covered in the Membranes and Cell Signalling module (i.e., Volume 7). Omissions are of course inevitable but they are minor. A case in point is the subject of phosphatases, the treatment of which does not take into account calcineurin. One of the key functions of this Ca2+ -activated protein phosphatase that is also regulated by calmodulin is to desphosphorylate voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. The mere recognition of such omissions before or after consulting textbooks and journals should be a spur to a more complete discussion by the student of the subject in a small group teaching setting.
Book Synopsis Systems Biomedicine by : Edison T. Liu
Download or read book Systems Biomedicine written by Edison T. Liu and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2009-09-17 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems biology is a critical emerging field that quantifies and annotates the complexity of biological systems in order to construct algorithmic models to predict outcomes from component input. Applications in medicine are revolutionizing our understanding of biological processes and systems. Systems Biomedicine is organized around foundations, computational modeling, network biology, and integrative biology, with the extension of examples from human biology and pharmacology, to focus on the applications of systems approaches to medical problems. An integrative approach to the underlying genomic, proteomic, and computational biology principles provides researchers with guidance in the use of qualitative systems and hypothesis generators. To reflect the highly interdisciplinary nature of the field, careful detail has been extended to ensure explanations of complex mathematical and biological principles are clear with minimum technical jargon. Organized to reflect the important distinguishing characteristics of systems strategies in experimental biology and medicine Provides precise and comprehensive measurement tools for constructing a model of the system and tools for defining complexity as an experimental dependent variable Includes a thorough discussion of the applications of quantitative principles to biomedical problems

Download or read book Biophysics written by William Bialek and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-12-17 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interactions between the fields of physics and biology reach back over a century, and some of the most significant developments in biology--from the discovery of DNA's structure to imaging of the human brain--have involved collaboration across this disciplinary boundary. For a new generation of physicists, the phenomena of life pose exciting challenges to physics itself, and biophysics has emerged as an important subfield of this discipline. Here, William Bialek provides the first graduate-level introduction to biophysics aimed at physics students. Bialek begins by exploring how photon counting in vision offers important lessons about the opportunities for quantitative, physics-style experiments on diverse biological phenomena. He draws from these lessons three general physical principles--the importance of noise, the need to understand the extraordinary performance of living systems without appealing to finely tuned parameters, and the critical role of the representation and flow of information in the business of life. Bialek then applies these principles to a broad range of phenomena, including the control of gene expression, perception and memory, protein folding, the mechanics of the inner ear, the dynamics of biochemical reactions, and pattern formation in developing embryos. Featuring numerous problems and exercises throughout, Biophysics emphasizes the unifying power of abstract physical principles to motivate new and novel experiments on biological systems. Covers a range of biological phenomena from the physicist's perspective Features 200 problems Draws on statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and related mathematical concepts Includes an annotated bibliography and detailed appendixes Instructor's manual (available only to teachers)
