Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In their contribution to the first edition of this Handbook, entitled "The Teeth," LEHNER and PLENK (1936) discussed the tissues constituting the "perio dontium" rather briefly. In contrast to the detailed paragraphs dealing with, for example, enamel and dentine, the section (about 40 pages and 20 illustra tions, mostly drawings) devoted to periodontal tissues failed to provide a factual review and summary of the contemporary knowledge and latest developments in research on the various components of the periodontium. Instead, much of the text was an attempt to arrive at conclusions from often purely semantic speculations, playing the various schools of thought against each other, provid ing arguments in favor of the authors' views and arguments for the feasibility and probability of accepting or rejecting the often diverse opinions, while the reader was referred to the already existing literature for factual details. Since 1936, however, factual details ofthe structural biology of the periodon tal tissues, i. e. their development, structure, function, and physiology, have been greatly extended and have been internationally accepted. With much less opin ionated belief to cope with, this knowledge has formed the solid foundation upon which diagnosis, prevention, and treatment in the fields of clinical perio dontology, modem orthodontics, and re- and transplantation procedures of teeth have been built.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental Aspects of Oral Biology assembles within one volume selected contributions from highly competent investigators currently engaged in research on developmental problems in oral tissues. The primary objective of this book is to facilitate rapid and lucid communication among researcher, teacher, student, and the practitioner interested in oral tissues and oral diseases. This is best accomplished by providing critical surveys of discussions of the state of knowledge or concepts in relevant areas of biology that relate to development, development in terms of embryogenesis, prenatal growth and development, maturation, senescence, and developmental aberrations which manifest themselves as oral pathology. The book begins with a study on the nutritional aspects of embryogenesis. Separate chapters then cover the molecular biology of developing systems; immunological determinants in development; and the migration, interaction, and early differentiation of orofacial tissues. Subsequent chapters deal with topics such as the development of the primary and secondary palate and the taste buds; tissue interaction during in vitro odontogenesis; matrix development in mineralizing tissues; and macromolecular interactions in the connective tissues of the periodontium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the intention of improving the rate, quality, and stability of orthodontic tooth movement, those in the field are now moving toward accomplishing this 'acceleration' with minimally or non-invasive methods. New procedures have been widely tested in humans, animal models, and in vitro. While interest is growing both in the industry and at the clinical level, the understanding of the biology is limited. Considering that a simple increase in force will result in tooth morbidity and arrest of the tooth migration, a multi-disciplinary approach is critical for success. This publication brings together multi-disciplinary expertise on a wide variety of processes related to and involved in orthodontic tooth movement. The premise is that, by better understanding the biological structures and the mechanism through which they respond to biomechanical forces, one can get a better assessment of the 'acceleration'. This work presents research aimed at an improved understanding of conventional and accelerated orthodontic tooth movement from a biological perspective and will be of great value to clinicians, researchers, academics, and students.

Book excerpt: This book examines all aspects of the progress being made towards the development of highly specific and sensitive biomarkers that will overcome the shortcomings of clinical assessments in periodontics. The opening chapters present the basic anatomic features of periodontal tissues, outline the nature and pathogenic mechanisms of periodontal diseases, and discuss both conventional and novel methods of diagnosis with reference to their specificity and sensitivity. The potential role of biomarkers in periodontal diagnosis is then presented in the light of the published data. The biological samples in which potential biomarkers are sought are evaluated comparatively, drawing attention to their strengths and weaknesses, and the available technologies for biomarker studies are reviewed. The potential benefits of biomarkers are also discussed with regard to the possible bidirectional interactions between periodontal diseases and systemic health. Finally, the past, present, and future of periodontics are examined from a broader perspective. Readers will find the book to be an ideal summary of the state of the art in the field as biomarkers emerge that promise to facilitate periodontal diagnostics and permit timely, personally tailored interventions.
