Book Synopsis Explorations of Mathematical Models in Biology with MATLAB by : Mazen Shahin
Download or read book Explorations of Mathematical Models in Biology with MATLAB written by Mazen Shahin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-12-24 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore and analyze the solutions of mathematical models from diverse disciplines As biology increasingly depends on data, algorithms, and models, it has become necessary to use a computing language, such as the user-friendly MATLAB, to focus more on building and analyzing models as opposed to configuring tedious calculations. Explorations of Mathematical Models in Biology with MATLAB provides an introduction to model creation using MATLAB, followed by the translation, analysis, interpretation, and observation of the models. With an integrated and interdisciplinary approach that embeds mathematical modeling into biological applications, the book illustrates numerous applications of mathematical techniques within biology, ecology, and environmental sciences. Featuring a quantitative, computational, and mathematical approach, the book includes: Examples of real-world applications, such as population dynamics, genetics, drug administration, interacting species, and the spread of contagious diseases, to showcase the relevancy and wide applicability of abstract mathematical techniques Discussion of various mathematical concepts, such as Markov chains, matrix algebra, eigenvalues, eigenvectors, first-order linear difference equations, and nonlinear first-order difference equations Coverage of difference equations to model a wide range of real-life discrete time situations in diverse areas as well as discussions on matrices to model linear problems Solutions to selected exercises and additional MATLAB codes Explorations of Mathematical Models in Biology with MATLAB is an ideal textbook for upper-undergraduate courses in mathematical models in biology, theoretical ecology, bioeconomics, forensic science, applied mathematics, and environmental science. The book is also an excellent reference for biologists, ecologists, mathematicians, biomathematicians, and environmental and resource economists.

Book Synopsis The Biological Standard Of Living On Three Continents by : John Komlos
Download or read book The Biological Standard Of Living On Three Continents written by John Komlos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effort of anthropometric historians to unearth the broad patterns of human biological well-being has led to the examination of nearly forgotten, centuries-old records from dusty archives in practically all the continents of the globe. French historians in the Annales tradition were among the first to adopt methods from physical anthropology and from the biological sciences, but the real expansion of the field dates from the pathbreaking work of Richard Steckel and Robert Fogel, which launched the discipline of anthropometric history on American soil Research has confirmed that physical stature is related to nutritional status and therefore to real family income, and thus to the general standard of living. Historians and development economists will find this line of research useful, as it informs us about the standard of living of members of society for whom data on wages are seldom available—women, children, aristocrats, farmers, and slaves. In addition, this research has shown that the biological standard of living may diverge from conventional indicators of welfare during the early stages of industrialization. Thus, per capita income is an ambiguous measure of welfare during some phases of growth, and it must be supplemented with data from other indicators, such as physical stature. The essays in this volume broaden our knowledge of the human effects of the momentous economic changes of the last two centuries, extending analysis to regions for which such information has been lacking, including Russia, Canada, Indonesia, Italy, and Spain.

Book Synopsis Physical Theory in Biology by : Charles J Lumsden
Download or read book Physical Theory in Biology written by Charles J Lumsden and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-04-19 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the physics of life and why does it matter? The essays in this book probe this question, celebrating modern biology's vibrant dialog with theoretical physics — a scientific adventure in which biological understanding is enriched by physical theory without losing its own inherent traditions and perspectives. The book explores organic complexity and self-organization through research applications to embryology, cell biology, behavioral neuroscience, and evolution. The essays will excite the interest of physics students in thinking about biology's “grand challenges”, in part by means of self-contained introductions to theoretical computer science, symmetry methods in bifurcation theory, and evolutionary games. Seasoned investigators in both the physical and life sciences will also find challenging ideas and applications presented in this volume. This is a Print On Demand title. Book Synopsis The Human Organism by : Elizabeth Weiss
Download or read book The Human Organism written by Elizabeth Weiss and published by Cognella Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of The Human Organism: Explorations in Biological Anthropology covers essential topics in evolution, including evolutionary theory, basic genetics, primates, paleontology, and human variation. Featuring updated readings, this book uses a variety of materials ranging from Darwin's original works to popular science writing, to make the information interesting, timely, and relevant. The Human Organism teaches students that evolution is pertinent to daily life and that understanding evolutionary concepts can help them make informed health decisions, improve their relationships, and increase their understanding of others. Much of the material was selected specifically to help students see the important connections between evolution and contemporary human existence. This textbook also stimulates critical thinking by choosing material from key players in the field who have challenged conventional interpretations of the evidence. It encourages them to analyze data, research, and conclusions. The second edition engages students with activity pages at the end of each chapter. Activities range from map questions to well-crafted crossword puzzles. The Human Organism features over 150 illustrations, photos, and maps. Each chapter has a case study that highlights a controversy relevant to the topic of study to help students grasp abstract concepts and apply them to concrete questions. Accessible to students with little or no previous exposure to the subject matter, The Human Organism is well-suited to general education biological anthropology courses.
