Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biological Bulletin, 1916, Vol. 30 Guyer in his excellent work on the spermatogenesis Of normal and hybrid pigeons says: It is a remarkable fact that no attempt has been made so far to investigate carefully the spermatogenesis or ovogenesis Of hybrid forms. In all the mass of literature discussing or touching upon hybridism, so far as I have been able to ascertain, there has been in no instance an approach to a thorough study of the germ cells. Yet almost every writer states that through the study Of hybrids, we have perhaps the best opportunity for gaining a clew to many of the most vital points in the great problem Of heredity. A number Of investigators have remarked that in certain instances the anthers, ovary, or testes as the case might be, were defective, and have let the matter go at that. It is even more remarkable now, since fifteen years have elapsed and no further attempt has been made to investigate carefully the spermatogenesis or ovogenesis of other hybrid forms. Professor Guyer's work on hybrid pigeons which was published in 1900, the same year in which Mendel's investigations were rediscovered, so far remains as the only outstanding piece Of work on that particular subject. It is all the more remarkable when we consider the fact that such a great deal Of cytological work has been done during the past fifteen years and that by far the largest bulk Of the work on hybridization has been done during the same period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biological Bulletin, 1907, Vol. 13 Besides showing several cases of what may be fission, Fig. 3 illustrates two other degenerative changes which occur when the ova are about to disintegrate. Frequently large vacuoles are found inside of the nu cleoli, in some instances apparently bursting out ward into the nucleoplasm, somewhat as the vacuoles in the external kidneys do These vacuoles in the nucleoli seem to originate from the bubbles of the chromatic froth but of this I am not certain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biological Bulletin, 1900, Vol. 1 IT is well known that in the ascidians the definitive brain and the neural gland are both derived from the same region - the trunk region of the central nerve tube of the tadpole. The ganglion is derived from one wall Of this tube, and the gland is derived from the opposite wall. Six years ago I pointed out that the ganglion of Salpa is homologous with both the ganglion and the neural gland of ascidians; the dorsal part Of the Salpa ganglion corresponding to the ascidian brain, and its ventral part corresponding to the ascidian neural gland} That is, a certain portion of the embryonic nervous system in ascidians becomes transformed into the neural gland, while in Salpa the corresponding region does not suffer this change, but remains as part of the definitive brain, its cells functioning as gland cells in the adult. I have recently found in the ascidians an interesting series Of diverse conditions as to the origin of the gangliated nerve which runs down in the median line of the partition between pharynx and cloaca. This is due to the fact that the committee on publication desired to limit the number of stations with a View to keeping the flora from reaching a size which would make the cost exceed the sum set aside for it by the state. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assembled here for the first time in one volume are forty classic papers that have laid the foundations of modern ecology. Whether by posing new problems, demonstrating important effects, or stimulating new research, these papers have made substantial contributions to an understanding of ecological processes, and they continue to influence the field today. The papers span nearly nine decades of ecological research, from 1887 on, and are organized in six sections: foundational papers, theoretical advances, synthetic statements, methodological developments, field studies, and ecological experiments. Selections range from Connell's elegant account of experiments with barnacles to Watt's encyclopedic natural history, from a visionary exposition by Grinnell of the concept of niche to a seminal essay by Hutchinson on diversity. Six original essays by contemporary ecologists and a historian of ecology place the selections in context and discuss their continued relevance to current research. This combination of classic papers and fresh commentaries makes Foundations of Ecology both a convenient reference to papers often cited today and an essential guide to the intellectual and conceptual roots of the field. Published with the Ecological Society of America.

Book excerpt: Science and technology have shaped not only economic empires and industrial landscapes, but also the identities, anxieties, and understandings of people living in modern times. Made Modern: Science and Technology in Canadian History draws together leading scholars from a wide range of fields to enrich our understanding of history inside and outside Canada’s borders. The book’s chapters examine how science and technology have allowed Canadians to imagine and reinvent themselves as modern. Focusing on topics including exploration, scientific rationality, the occult, medical instruments, patents, communication, and infrastructure, the contributors situate Canadian scientific and technological developments within larger national and transnational contexts. The first major collection of its kind in thirty years, Made Modern explores the place of science and technology in shaping Canadians’ experience of themselves and their place in the modern world.
