Deciding on whether a patient needs a knee replacement can be difficult. There is one procedure of knee replacements that has seen very good success, but technology today is providing a much more fitting replacement. The materials used in the prosthesis are typically polyethylene and biologically acceptable metals, specifically alloys. Since these materials aren't biologically natural the body tends to have a negative effect to them. Oxidation and reduction reactions occur due to the biological fluids and prosthesis itself. These reactions cause shrapnel and reduce the stability of the prosthesis causing revision of the replacement to occur. Rehabilitation after surgery can be labor intensive, but studies have shown that these methods can be improved upon. Complications mainly arise in patients with RA and these problems need to be addressed more. All the factors in this entire process can be joined together in order to figure out the best route with the best results through comparing each step. New titanium alloys composed of nickel, chromium and cobalt are being introduced as well in order to decrease the body's response to these protheses.
