These sketches show how young men have over come difficulties, sometimes poverty, sometimes illness; how they have made failures before find ing their true vocation. They show the results of energy, perseverance, and untiring devotion' how a cheerful face and a hopeful spirit like Agassiz's, or a gentle and kindly nature like Darwin's, can win its way against Opposition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Men of Science: A History of Scientific Progress I count it an honour to be allowed to write a few words of introduction for the English edition of Professor Lenard's historical studies of the great men of science. It is now over twenty years since I worked as a research student in his laboratory, and time has dulled many memories, but the recollection of his inspiriting and wholehearted devotion to the service of science, of his generous enthusiasm forthe work of men of genius, living and dead, and of his wonderful experimental skill and resource, is still bright. Ramsauer, Hausser and Kossel, whose names have since become famous, were among his research students at that time, and the physics colloquium, with Professor Lenard's illumin ating and significant interjections, comments and questions, made the pursuit of scientific truth seem an exciting and supremely desirable quest. It was on such occasions that Professor Lenard's interest in the history of science came particularly to our notice. Who had first shown the way here, what had he actually done, how was he led to do it? Such questions, to which our professor too often had to supply the answer himself, brought before us the great ness of past workers and the significance of their achieve ments. Galileo, Newton, Faraday, Hertz (who was Lenard's teacher): such men became living figures for us, and their tasks and successes appeared as part of an organic structure, and not as an empty record of past times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men of Science and Industry: A Guide to the Biographies of Scientists, Engineers, Inventors and Physicians, in the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Although the material relating to the lives of scientists and engineers is considerable in quantity, it is widely scattered and difficult of access. This condition was recognized many years ago by the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education, which appointed a committee of investigation, but as yet no feasible plan for a uniform editing of the material has been found. In the mean time, this Library has compiled a card index to the biographies in its own collection, and this bibliography is now printed in the hope that it may prove useful to others, even though it is confined to the resources of one library. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Catholic Men of Science The object of these biographies is to demonstrate the fact, unknown apparently to many critics of the Church, that there are numerous stars of science (and many more than this series includes) who were also devout Catholics, and found no difficulty in maintaining both positions simultaneously. It ought to be superfluous to maintain such a thesis, and it would be so if persons who propagate such accusations as are made against the Catholic Church would, first of all, investigate the facts of the case. But, as the statement has been made, it may be well to give some definite examples of the co existence in the same individual of scientific enthusiasm and reputation -with a steadfast attachment to the doctrines of the Catholic Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of Eminent Literary and Scientific Men of America Much is said about the development of a purely national literature, but we confess that we have little expectation of realizing its speedy accomplish ment. So long as England and America speak the same language, and so long as the human mind is progressive in each, so long will they possess a literature in common, and whether willing to admit the truth or not, so long will they derive mutual advantage from the labors of either. And why should it not be thus? The gentle strains of Wordsworth fall as sweetly upon the ear from the quiet banks of the Delaware, as amid the mountains and lakes of his own Westmoreland, and Longfellow's Voices of the Night breathe as melodious and plaintive a tone, when echoed along the cliffs of Devon, as from the rock bound shores of New England. Literature is the reflex of society. It does not fashion, but is fashioned by it, -it is the consequence and not the cause. Its materials are developed, its forms moulded, and its authors supplied from its ample resources, to which it gives a coloring in return. Occasionally some transcendant genius bursts upon the world in advance of hls time, and lives neglected by his own, to be worshipped by succeeding ages; but this is an exception, not an example. The literature of a country is usually the fairest criterion of its tastes, opinions, character and refinement, and judged by this standard, the hasty observer might question the advances of American society, because he sees nothing in its literature materially differing from that of the English. N ow this only proves the intimate relations subsisting between them, which neither time nor distance, nor circumstance can entirely obliterate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American College Course The world beneath us, the world about us, the world above na - this is the general subject of the lessons in the present volume. How interesting the subject is, the les sons themselves will prove. Many people suppose that it is necessary to attend col lege in order to obtain a knowledge of science. This is a very erroneous notion. Some of the foremost men of science the world has known were never at college. The same thing is true of hundreds and thousands of other people who have had great love for scientific study. For successful scientific study the first requisite is a heart in sympathy with Nature; the next is an observing mind; the next is a determination to make the most of one's own opportunities, whatever these may be. The lessons in this volume are intended for people whose opportunities for scientific study are only such as lie open to every one. To every one the great world of out-door life is a freely accessible book. With that book, and with such practical help as these lessons will afford, very considerable progress in scientific study can be accomplished.
