Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of Rufus Choate The first four or five years of his practice was in Danvers, which he twice represented, meanwhile, in the State Legis lature. It should be recorded, however, for the benefit of such as need such a record, that the early success of Rufus Choate in law business was not such as tended very strongly to his encouragement and, during the first two or three years of his practice, it was not unfrequently a subject of serious debate with him whether he had not mistaken his calling, and whether he would not better relinquish his profession, and apply himself to some other occupation. He persevered, however, and at length his great diligence and fidelity, joined with the fame of his eloquence and skill, were rewarded with a full share of business. A most important professional trait of Mr. Choate developed itself in the very early stages of his practice - a trait which proved a permanent character istic throughout his whole brilliant career, and which, doubt less, conduced materially to his distinguished success. We allude here to his marvelous faithfulness to any and every cause which he undertook to manage and defend and that, too, irrespective utterly of its importance or otherwise, or of any recompense or lack of recompense. Before a justice of the peace, in an office not larger than a shoemaker's shop, in defense of some petty offender, he poured forth the same wealth of words and illustrations, of humor and wit, and, in its measure, of learning and argument which, afterward, de lighted the Supreme Court and Senate. Indeed, through out his life, he never reserved his brilliant arguments for a suitable audience. He early made it a rule, for the sake of' increasing his power as an advocate, to argue, at full length, every case he tried, and do his best on every occasion. In the mean time the wish has been frequently expressed that the Life might be republished by itself. In accordance with this desire, the present edition has been prepared. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biographical Sketches of Rufus Choate The "Home College Series" will contain one hundred short papers on a wide range of subject - biographical, historical, scientific, literary, domestic, political, and religious. Indeed, the religious tone will characterize all of them. They are written for every body - for all whose leisure is limited, but who desire to use the minutes for the enrichment of life. These papers contain seeds from the best gardens in all the world of human knowledge, and if dropped wisely into good soil, will bring forth harvests of beauty and value. They are for the young - especially for young people (and older people, too) who are out of the schools, who are full of business and cares, who are in danger of reading nothing, or of reading a sensational literature that is worse than nothing. One of these papers a week read over and over, thought and talked about at "odd times," will give in one year a vast fund of information, an intellectual quickening, worth even more than the mere knowledge acquired, a taste for solid reading, many hours of simple and wholesome pleasure, and ability to talk intelligently and helpfully to one's friends. Pastors may organize "Home College" classes, or "Lyceum Reading Unions," or "Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circles," and help the young people to read and think and talk and live to worthier purpose. A young man may have his own little "college" all by himself, rend this series of tracts one after the other, (there will soon be one hundred of them ready,) examine himself on them by the "Thought-Outline to Help the Memory," and thus gain knowledge, and, what is better, a love of knowledge. And what a young man may do in this respect, a young woman, and both old men and old women, may do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. When the soul ascends to another sphere of existence, and the body is placed in the earth to mingle with it once more, there is still something which remains with them whom the departing spirit has left, something which has not gone up out of our sight, nor down into the grave to rest in silence, and decay. It is the growth, the flower and the fruit of the seeds the man was planting in the fields of life as he walked through them; it is the influence and effect of his life. For this is a work which every man must do. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Rufus Choate: With Some Consideration of His Studies, Methods, and Opinions, and of His Style as a Speaker and Writer In respect to almost any other memory, those writers might not have been inclined to turn aside from their favorite studies or official labors to take part in a commemoration. But, in this instance, a loving Spirit moved them, and presided over their work. With the loyalty of disciples, ahd the faith fulness due to a trust, they give delineations of Mr. Choate. The poetical, the practical, the ear nest, the loyal, the serious, the reverential traits of his character, as revealed at home and abroad, are set forth with freedom and fidelity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Rufus Choate, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Memoir of His Life When first requested to prepare a sketch of the life of Mr. Choate, I was not ignorant of the difficulty of writing it so as to present a fair and complete portraiture - the traits of his character were so peculiar, its lights and shades so delicate, various, and evanescent. The difficulty has not grown less as I have proceeded with the work, and no one, I think, can be so well aware as I am, of its insufficiency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses and Orations of Rufus Choate But, I confess, I should love to see it assume a form in which it Should speak directly to the heart and affec tions and imagination Of the Whole people. I should love to see by the side of these formidable records of dates, and catalogues of British Governors, and Provin cial acts of Assembly, - these registers of the settle ment of towns, and the planting of churches, and convocation of synods, and drawing up of platforms, by the side of these austere and simply severe narratives of Indian wars, English usurpations, French intrigues, Colonial risings, and American independence - I should love to see by the side of these great and good books about a thousand neat duodecimos of the size of Ivanhoe, Kenilworth, and Marmion, all full of pictures of our natural beauty and grandeur, the still richer pictures of our society and manners, the lights and shadows of our life, - full of touching incidents, generous sentiments, just thoughts, beaming images, such as are scattered over every thing which Scott has written, as thick as stars on the brow of night, and give to every thing he has written that imperishable, strange charm, which will be on it and embalm it for ever.
