Book excerpt: Biographical research may take a range of forms and may vary in its application and approach but has the unified and coherent aim to give ′voice′ to individuals. The central concern of this collection is to assemble articles (from sociology, social psychology, education, health, criminology, social gerontology, epidemiology, management and organizational research) that illustrate the full range of debates, methods and techniques that can be combined under the heading ′biographical research′. Volume One: Biographical Research: Starting Points, Debates and Approaches explores the different biographical methods currently used while locating these within the history of social science methods. Volume Two: Biographical Interviews, Oral Histories and Life Narratives focuses on the more established, interview-based, biographical research methods and considers the analytical strategies used for interview-based biographical research Volume Three: Forms of Life Writing: Letters, Diaries and Auto/Biography considers the value of ′data′ contained within letters, diaries and auto/biography and illustrates how this data has been analyzed to reveal biographies and their social context. Volume Four: Other Documents of Life: Photographs, Cyber Documents and Ephemera focuses on the ′other′ human documents and objects, like photographs, cyber-documents (emails, blogs, social networking sites, webpages) and other ephemera (such as official documents) that are used extensively in biographical research.

Book Synopsis What Happens on Wednesdays by : Emily Jenkins
Download or read book What Happens on Wednesdays written by Emily Jenkins and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR). This book was released on 2007-08-07 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A preschooler marks the progress of her day, not by the clock but by what happens after lunch, after nap, after swimming, after the library - and after Daddy comes home. She doesn't map her neighborhood by street signs, either. Her morning walk to see dogs in the park takes her past the cat outside the deli, past her friend Errolyn's building and the daycare where she used to go when she was little, and down the block to the bagel store. The sounds, tastes, smells, and sights of a multiethnic Brooklyn neighborhood, as seen through a child's eyes and captured with enchanting pictures by debut illustrator Lauren Castillo, will encourage children to make their own sensory maps and list the events in their daily schedules.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Biography, References to Books and Magazine Articles on Prominent Men and Women of the Time, 1903 (Classic Reprint) by : Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh
Download or read book Contemporary Biography, References to Books and Magazine Articles on Prominent Men and Women of the Time, 1903 (Classic Reprint) written by Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Contemporary Biography, References to Books and Magazine Articles on Prominent Men and Women of the Time, 1903 The following lists appeared first in the Monthly Bulletin of this Library, from May 1899 to November 1900. Many of the numbers in which they appeared being out of print, and the lists themselves out-of-date, they are now republished, having been revised and brought down to September 1, 1902, many new names being added to the original ones, and three entirely new lists made; namely, - Sculptors, Clergymen, Social reformers and others. No attempt has been made to compile complete bibliographies, but merely to include references to satisfactory material in this Library. The aim has been to select, from the mass of current biography and criticism, general articles giving as fully as possible information concerning each person's private and public life, his work and personality. Each article has been examined for this purpose, and a note made to indicate its character. Articles that are fragmentary or unauthoritative or mere repetitions of the more commonly known facts; reviews of single books, except when general studies of an author's style; treatises on a man's work from a purely theoretical or scientific standpoint, have not been included. The general rule laid down for the selection of names was to include living persons and those who have died since 1890. There are some exceptions to this rule, e.g. Darwin, who was included because of his close association with Huxley, Spencer, and Tyndall, the biographies of the four giving a good survey of the scientific movement which they represent. Other exceptions are Tennyson and Browning, who were omitted on account of the abundant material concerning them, which is easily accessible. The general idea throughout has been to make the lists of the greatest possible use to this particular Library, and not to devote space to names to which a satisfactory number of references can easily be found in the general catalogue. Book Synopsis Diabetes: The Biography by : Robert Tattersall
Download or read book Diabetes: The Biography written by Robert Tattersall and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diabetes is a disease with a fascinating history and one that has been growing dramatically with urbanization. According to the World Health Authority, it now affects 4.6% of adults over 20, reaching 30% in the over 35s in some populations. It is one of the most serious and widespread diseases today. But the general perception of diabetes is quite different. At the beginning of the 20th century, diabetes sufferers mostly tended to be middle-aged and overweight, and could live tolerably well with the disease for a couple of decades, but when it occasionally struck younger people, it could be fatal within a few months. The development of insulin in the early 1920s dramatically changed things for these younger patients. But that story of the success of modern medicine has tended to dominate public perception, so that diabetes is regarded as a relatively minor illness. Sadly, that is far from the case, and diabetes can produce complications affecting many different organs. Robert Tattersall, a leading authority on diabetes, describes the story of the disease from the ancient writings of Galen and Avicenna to the recognition of sugar in the urine of diabetics in the 18th century, the identification of pancreatic diabetes in 1889, the discovery of insulin in the early 20th century, the ensuing optimism, and the subsequent despair as the complexity of this now chronic illness among its increasing number of young patients became apparent. Yet new drugs are being developed, as well as new approaches to management that give hope for the future. Diabetes affects many of us directly or indirectly through friends and relatives. This book gives an authoritative and engaging account of the long history and changing perceptions of a disease that now dominates the concerns of health professionals in the developed world. Diabetes: the biography is part of the Oxford series, Biographies of Diseases, edited by William and Helen Bynum. In each individual volume an expert historian or clinician tells the story of a particular disease or condition throughout history - not only in terms of growing medical understanding of its nature and cure, but also shifting social and cultural attitudes, and changes in the meaning of the name of the disease itself.
