Book excerpt: Birders in Central America have long known that Nicaragua is one of the best birding locations in the world, and with tourism to the country on the upswing, birders from the rest of the world are now coming to the same conclusion. The largest country in Central America, Nicaragua is home to 763 resident and passage birds, by latest count. Because of its unique topography—the country is relatively flat compared to its mountainous neighbors to the north and south—it forms a geographical barrier of sorts, which means that many birds that originate in North America reach their southernmost point in Nicaragua, while many birds from South America reach their northernmost point in the country. There are few places in the world where you can find both a Roadrunner and a Scarlet Macaw. Birds of Nicaragua features descriptions and illustrations of all 763 species currently identified in the country, along with information about 44 additional species that are likely to appear in the coming years. Range maps, based on years of field research, are color-coded. Other features include a richly illustrated anatomical features section, a checklist, a visual guide to vultures and raptors in flight, and a quick-find index.

The official language is Spanish, and the country has a population of approximately six million people. The capital city is Managua, which is also the largest city in the country. Nicaragua’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, with coffee, cotton, and bananas being the main agricultural products. Tourism is also an important industry, with visitors attracted to the country’s stunning scenery, including lakes, volcanoes, and beaches. Despite being one of the poorest countries in the region, Nicaragua has made progress in recent years and is considered to be one of the safest countries in Central America.

Book Synopsis Assessing Management of Nicaragua’s Caribbean Region Protected Areas Using Remote Sensing by : Paola Sofía Muñoz Gamboa

This book was released on 2021 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tropics, deforestation is the most significant contributor to biodiversity loss, land degradation, habitat fragmentation, and climate variation. In the Neotropics, the main driver of deforestation is the expansion of the agricultural frontier. The forests of Nicaragua are home to 2% of the world's species, passages of Central American wildlife, and most of the indigenous communities in the Caribbean. The autocratic government of Nicaragua has endangered the preservation of its forests due to negligence in its protection and in the search for the well-being of the people who live around it, even if the forests are within a protected area. In collaboration with Centro Humboldt in Nicaragua, I created an Indio Maíz Biological Reserve map with a 10 km buffer zone for 2020. I compared it with two maps made by the Ministry of the Environmental and Centro Humboldt from 2010 and 2015, respectively. I mapped land-use changes in Indio Maíz Biological Reserve in Nicaragua between 2010 and 2020 in five-year increments. The creation of this set of maps of land-cover changes over time enabled the calculation of deforestation and forest fragmentation rates and the comparison of data inside and outside protected areas. This mapping included identifying main economic activities, including cattle ranching, perennial plantations, annual crops, and gold mining. The creation of this 2020 map made it possible to calculate deforestation rates inside and outside protected areas, with a special focus on the Indio Maíz Biological Reserve (IM). The maps showed a higher deforestation rate per year outside (-3.2%) than inside (-2.5%) Indio Maíz Biological Reserve between 2010 and 2020. However, the deforestation rate increased nine times inside the protected area between 2010 and 2020, while it decreased by half outside the biological reserve in the same period. Deforestation is scattered in IM, gradually thinning the forests to pasture and reducing its core zone. The land-use change map between 2010 and 2020 can be used as a basis for decision-makers to optimize the protection in IM and to involve the indigenous communities in its protection. The authoritarian regime established by Daniel Ortega in 2007 makes this resource especially critical.

Book Synopsis Central American Biodiversity by : Falk Huettmann
Download or read book Central American Biodiversity written by Falk Huettmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 811 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights key results and lessons learnt from two field sites, La Suerte in Costa Rica and Ometepe Nicaragua. It provides long term data on species abundance and distribution. Primates receive specific attention in this book, as they are flagship species and good indicators for the “health” of an ecosystem, but as well a money maker. Many primate species are sensitive to habitat alteration, and are often hunted out first. But they play an important role as seed dispersal agents for the regeneration of the forest. The book then compares results from the two field sites with regional trends, and explores potential solutions such as REDD+. This book strongly calls for new approaches in conservation, it makes the case for looking beyond the pure species biology and classic conservation angle and to take into account the economic and political realities.

Book Synopsis Thomas R. Howell?s Check-list of the Birds of Nicaragua as of 1993 by : Thomas R. Howell
Download or read book Thomas R. Howell?s Check-list of the Birds of Nicaragua as of 1993 written by Thomas R. Howell and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010-10-10 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between December 1951 and April 1967, Thomas R. Howell made 13 separate research trips to Nicaragua. The result was a collection of over 2,000 bird skins and at least 16 publications that form the backbone of Nicaraguan ornithology. In the late 1970s, Howell began working on a manuscript that was intended to be his major contribution to the ornithology of the country. The first version of this "Check-list of the Birds of Nicaragua" was not ready until 1983, and many different typewritten versions circulated among a small but growing number of Nicaraguan biologists for the next two decades. Partly because of Howell's passion for detail and completeness, and finally because of his failing health in the late 1990s, the check-list was never published before his death in December 2004. This monograph remedies what had become a significant obstacle to further studies in the country by providing, in Howell's own words, a comprehensive background for subsequent explorations. It documents the 654 species (611 supported with specimen evidence) known to have occurred in Nicaragua as of 1993, the date of the last substantial revision of the manuscript, and also provides a rationale for anticipating another 44 species. The publication of this significant chapter in the history of Central American bird studies is offered both as a tribute to Tom Howell's enthusiasm and contributions and as a frame of reference and springboard for current and future ornithologists inspired to study the rich and still largely unexplored avifauna of Nicaragua--
Book Synopsis Continental Fishes of Nicaragua by : Arturo Angulo
Download or read book Continental Fishes of Nicaragua written by Arturo Angulo and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Abstract: Based on a combination of intensive literature review, electronic database searches, re-identification of museum specimens, and fieldwork, we provide an updated checklist of the continental fishes of Nicaragua. This checklist, systematically arranged at the ordinal and familial level, includes nomenclatural revisions, distributional information, conservation status, and when appropriate, cross-references to previous lists and revisionary works on the fish fauna of the country and region (Central America); illustrations and descriptions to the family level and color photographs of some representative species are also included. According to our results, the native Nicaraguan continental fish fauna is composed of 244 species, divided into 111 genera, 45 families, 24 orders, and two classes; increasing by 60 (i.e., 32.6%) the number of species originally reported by Villa (1982; i.e., the most comprehensive work published to date). The majority of the Nicaraguan native continental fish species, according to their supposed tolerance to salinity, are peripheral (68.9%), followed by secondary freshwater fishes (23.8%), and primary freshwater fishes (only 7.4%). Fish diversity in the 19 major river basins ranged between 21 and 90 species (mean = 58 species, median = 60); the Escondido (Es; 87 species), in the Atlantic, and the Pacífico de Nicaragua (PN; 90), in the Pacific, presented the highest species richness. Most species (188) are restricted to elevations between 0 and 100 meters above sea level (masl); only a few species (18), in contrast, were found at elevations greater than 500 masl (up to 780 masl). Fourteen species in this revision are listed as endemic to Nicaragua. Regarding their conservation status, 22 species (9.0%) are categorized, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), as Data Deficient, 186 (76.2%) as Least Concern, and seven (2.9%) as Near Threatened; while 24 species (9.8%) are listed as Threatened, thirteen (5.3%) as Vulnerable, two (0.8%) as Endangered, and nine (3.7%) as Critically Endangered. Five species (2.0%) have not yet been evaluated. Six exotic species are also reported. Our results provide a framework for future taxonomic and biogeographic works on fishes from this country and region (Central America), particularly by providing up-to-date knowledge on nomenclature and distributions. In addition, the data provided in this revision will help to monitor fish distributional changes in the future due to human introductions and global change and will aid in conservation decisions concerning Nicaraguan continental fishes.
