Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this text, the small team of expert authors presents the field in a comprehensive and accessible manner that is well suited for students and junior researchers. The result is a highly readable and systematically structured introduction to antimicrobial peptides, their structure, biological function and mode of action. The authors point the way towards a rational design of this potentially highly effective new class of clinical antibiotics on the brink of industrial application. They do this by discussing their design principles, target membranes and structure-activity relationships. The final part of the book describes recent successes in the application of peptides as anticancer agents.

Book Synopsis Biochemistry of Antimicrobial Action by : Trevor John Franklin
Download or read book Biochemistry of Antimicrobial Action written by Trevor John Franklin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid advances made in the study of the synthesis, structure and function of biological macromolecules in the last fifteen years have enabled scientists concerned with antimicrobial agents to achieve a considerable measure of understanding of how these substances inhibit cell growth and division. The use of antimicrobial agents as highly specific inhibitors has in turn substantially assisted the investigation of complex biochemical processes. The literature in this field is so extensive however, that we considered an attempt should be made to draw together in an introductory book the more significant studies of recent years. This book, which is in fact based on lecture courses given by us to undergraduates at Liverpool and Manchester Universities, is therefore intended as an introduction to the biochemistry of antimicrobial action for advanced students in many disciplines. We hope that it may also be useful to established scientists who are new to this area of research. The book is concerned with a discussion of medically important antimicrobial compounds and also a number of agents that, although having no medical uses, have proved invaluable as research tools in biochemistry. Our aim has been to present the available information in a simple and readable way, emphasizing the established facts rather than more controversial material. Whenever possible, however, we have indicated the gaps in the present knowledge of the subject where further information is required.

Book Synopsis Peptide and Protein Interaction with Membrane Systems by : Sara Bobone
Download or read book Peptide and Protein Interaction with Membrane Systems written by Sara Bobone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-31 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her thesis, Sara Bobone outlines spectroscopic studies of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) which are promising lead compounds for drugs used to fight multidrug resistant bacteria. Bobone shows that AMPs interact with liposomes and she clarifies the structure of pores formed by one of these molecules. These results help us to understand how AMPs are selective for bacterial membranes and how their activity can be finely tuned by modifying their sequence. Findings which solve several conundrums debated in the literature for years. In addition, Bobone uses liposomes as nanotemplates for the photopolymerization of hydrogels - exploiting the self- assembly properties of phospholipids. Bobone was able to trap an enzyme using nanometeric particles, while still allowing its activity by the diffusion of substrates and products through the network of the polymer. The innovative nano devices described in this thesis could solve many of the hurdles still hampering the therapeutic application of protein-based drugs.

Book Synopsis Antibacterial Peptide Protocols by : William Schaffer
Download or read book Antibacterial Peptide Protocols written by William Schaffer and published by Humana Press. This book was released on 2010-10-28 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As this book. Antibacterial Peptide Protocols, will attest, my enthusi asm for the field of antibacterial peptides is based on a conviction (and I am unashamed to say, prejudice) that these substances are in essence antibiotics produced by the host that then participate in host defense against infectious agents. Because of their capacity to exert antibiotic-like action against patho genic microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses), there is reason to believe that these agents will soon be used clinically to treat infectious diseases. In fact, in recent years, biotechnology companies have been formed for the sole purpose of developing antibacterial peptides for clinical use. It should be emphasized that antibacterial peptides will likely play a major role in the treatment of infectious diseases, particularly with the increasing prob lem of multidrug-resistant microbes and the relative dearth of new antibiotics being provided by pharmaceutical companies. The topic of this volume of Methods in Molecular Biology, the diverse methods used in research on antibacterial peptides, is thus quite timely. As the subject of antibacterial peptides develops into its own discipline (something strongly suggested by the explosion in the number of papers published over the past decade), it is essential that reliable techniques and strategies be made available not only to those of us in the field, but also to the newcomers and researchers in complementary disciplines.
Book Synopsis Lantibiotics and Related Peptides by : Ralph W. Jack
Download or read book Lantibiotics and Related Peptides written by Ralph W. Jack and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last 10 years a proliferation of information concerning the lantibiotics and related peptide antibiotics has come to the fore. This is the first book to summarize this information comprehensively and concisely. Unlike other reviews, which consider the lantibiotics in isolation, this book brings together for the first time the concepts and interrelationships between lantibiotics and other antibiotics, bacteriocins and antimicrobial peptides. This conceptualization should stimulate new ideas, discussion and research in many areas of antibiotic research.
Book Synopsis Antimicrobial Peptides by : Katsumi Matsuzaki
Download or read book Antimicrobial Peptides written by Katsumi Matsuzaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), their mechanisms of antimicrobial action, other activities, and various problems that must still be overcome regarding their clinical application. Divided into four major parts, the book begins with a general overview of AMPs (Part I), and subsequently discusses the various mechanisms of antimicrobial action and methods for researching them (Part 2). It then addresses a range of activities other than antimicrobial action, such as cell penetration, antisepsis, anticancer, and immunomodulatory activities (Part 3), and explores the prospects of clinical application from various standpoints such as the selective toxicity, design, and discovery of AMPs (Part 4). A huge number of AMPs have been discovered in plants, insects, and vertebrates including humans, and constitute host defense systems against invading pathogenic microorganisms. Consequently, many attempts have been made to utilize AMPs as antibiotics. AMPs could help to solve the urgent problem of drug-resistant bacteria, and are also promising with regard to sepsis and cancer therapy. Gathering a wealth of information, this book will be a bible for all those seeking to develop antibiotics, anti-sepsis, or anticancer agents based on AMPs.
