Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central theme of this book is that systems of cell-cell signalling via nerves, hormones, local mediators and growth factors are not distinct phenomena, but branches of one general mechanism. These topics therefore can and should be discussed in an integrated manner, and the division of cell signalling studies into separate pigeonholes such as neuroscience, endocrinology or cancer biology is unnecessary, if not counterproductive. I also believe it to be unfortunate that there is not a collective term to describe neurotransmitters, hormones, local mediators and growth factors, other than clumsy phrases such as "extracellular signal molecule". The lack of a short and distinctive word for these entities genuinely hampers people from thinking about them in an integrated way. Having decided that it was presumptuous to invent a new term, I have chosen in this book the term first messenger to cover all types of extracellular signal molecule, because of the widespread acceptance of the term second messenger to represent the intracellular signal molecules that are produced in response to many of them. I have given the book the title "biochemical messengers", which is a global term to cover both first and second messengers. The impetus for writing the book came, as must often be the case, when I had to put together a course on cell-cell signalling for biochemistry students at the University of Dundee.

Book excerpt: An essential element in the development and functional integrity of all organisms is intercellular communication. This is achieved by the secretion of soluble messenger molecules which subsequently interact with receptor-effector pathways in the responsive cells. Hormones are traditionally defined as chemical messengers synthesized by endocrine glands. Unlike hormones produced by endocrine glands, growth factors are hormone-related substances produced by many tissues and play an important role in controlling growth and development. While the exact physiological roles of growth factors have yet to be elucidated, they play important roles in the regulation of cellular proliferation and/or differentiation during ontogenesis, growth and differentiation. During recent years there has been a substantial increase in research related to peptide growth factors, their receptors, and modes of action. With the discovery and characterization of numerous growth factors, it became clear that these growth factors had multiple features in common with classic hormones as well as with oncogenes. Furthermore, there are distinct families of growth factors based either on structural or functional similarities.

It was held at the Lisner Auditorium of the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. during June 1-5, 1992. The theme of the meeting was "Growth Factors, Peptides, and Receptors," and speakers emphasized both basic and clinical research in these areas. The seven plenary sessions emphasized Peptides, Growth Factors, Peptide Receptors, Growth Factor Receptors, Second Messengers, Proliferation, and Clinical Correlations. The chapters in this volume are derived from each of these scientific sessions plus the poster and special sessions. The Abraham White Distinguished Scientist Award was presented to Dr. Solomon H. Snyder for his numerous contributions to the field of neurochemistry. He presented the keynote address "Nitric Oxide: A Novel Neuronal Messenger." Dr. Snyder discussed the pathway of nitric oxide (NO) synthesis by the enzyme NO synthase. Released NO may be responsible for the neuronal toxicity associated with NMDA, an excitatory amino acid analogue. Dr. Snyder noted that NO may be the first of a new class of transmitters, with carbon monoxide being another candidate. The Distinguished Public Service Award was presented to Senator Fritz Hollings in of his leadership and outstanding achievements in the United States Senate recognition and for his legislative support for biomedical research and education. In the symposium banquet address, Senator Hollings stressed the need for continued support of research to combat serious diseases such as cancer.

Book excerpt: While biomedical investigation has greatly advanced, investigators have lost touch with and inadvertently corrupted significant nomenclature at the foundation of their science. Nowadays, one has to be an insider to even understand the titles of journals, as modern biochemists have a tendency to invent new terms to describe old phenomena and apply a

Lundblad, with the assistance of Fiona M. Macdonald of CRC Press, this fourth edition of the Handbook of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology represents a dramatic revision — the first in two decades — of one of biochemistry's most referenced works. This edition gathers a wealth of information not easily obtained, including information not found on the web. Offering a molecular perspective not available 20 years ago, it provides physical and chemical data on proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates. Presented in an organized, concise, and simple-to-use format, this popular reference allows quick access to the most frequently used data. Covering a wide range of topics, from classical biochemistry to proteomics and genomics, it also details the properties of commonly used biochemicals, laboratory solvents, and reagents. Just a small sampling of the wealth of information found inside the handbook: Buffers and buffer solutions Heat capacities and combustion levels Reagents for the chemical modification of proteins Comprehensive classification system for lipids Biological characteristics of vitamins A huge variety of UV data Recommendations for nomenclature and tables in biochemical thermodynamics Guidelines for NMR measurements for determination of high and low pKa values Viscosity and density tables Chemical and physical properties of various commercial plastics Generic source-based nomenclature for polymers Therapeutic enzymes About the Editors: Roger L. Book excerpt: Biochemistry of Scandium and Yttrium gathers together existing knowledge about scandium and yttrium from a wide variety of disciplines. Part 2 addresses the biochemical aspects of these two elements, and the various medical and environmental applications. (Part 1 presents a comparative study of the physical and chemical properties of scandium and yttrium, looking at both their similarities and their differences.) While these elements are relatively rare in nature, these books will show that they have unusual physical and chemical properties, and a disproportionate number of important applications. Improved analytical techniques have revealed that scandium and yttrium are present throughout living matter, even though only a relatively limited number of species have been analyzed so far. This fact of course has far-ranging implications for biological and environmental concerns. The major impacts of scandium and yttrium in science, technology, and medicine will be of interest to a wide variety of researchers, including geochemists, inorganic and organic chemists, clinical biochemists, and those specializing in environmental protection.
