Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemical Actions of Hormones, Volume XI is a 12-chapter text that covers the general and specific biochemical aspects of polypeptide and steroid hormones. The introductory chapters deal with the biochemical actions of the leukotrienes, the cyclic adenosine monophosphate, and the gonadotropin releasing hormone. The next chapters highlight detailed contributions on polypeptide hormone research. These chapters specifically tackle the insulin actions and the role of insulin in mammary gland development. The last series of chapters on steroid hormones includes X-ray crystallographic analysis of steroid structures and the significance of these studies on steroid-receptor interactions. These chapters also explore the analysis of the estrogen receptor with monoclonal antibodies; the role of estrogen receptor in responsive mammalian cells; the use of peroxidase as a marker of catechol estrogen action; and the activation and stabilization of the glucocorticoid receptor. This volume will be of great benefit to biochemists, biologists, endocrinologists, and researchers who are interested in the hormonal action and regulation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemical Actions of Hormones, Volume XII is a compendium of papers discussing aspects of molecular biology with regard to hormone action and to certain hormone receptors. One paper discusses the different approaches and strategies that are used in determining the amino acid sequence. The paper also describes the structural organization of polyprotein precursors such as the peptide chemistry approach or the nucleic acid approach. Another paper investigates the regulation of prolactin biosynthesis by peptide hormones as a model for peptidergic regulation of gene expression. The paper defines in detail which components of the biosynthetic machinery are being regulated by the polypeptide hormones. One paper also analyzes the molecular biology of the metallothioneins, focusing on the glucocorticoid regulation of metallothioneins genes. Experiments show that when the mouse MT-I gene is activated in lymphoid cells, or transferred to other cells, it still retains information needed in metal-regulated expression, though glucocorticoids can no longer regulate the same gene. Other papers discuss the purification and properties of the nerve growth factor receptor, and the thyrotropin receptor. Micro-biologists, biochemists, molecular biologists, cellular biologists, endocrinologists, and scientists involved in cell research will find this collection valuable.

Book excerpt: Biochemical Actions of Hormones, Volume VII is a nine-chapter text that covers a broad range of subjects representing research efforts on hormone action. This book deals first with the developments on hormones of the thymus and the evidence on the regulation of liver steroid and drug metabolism by the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary. These topics are followed by discussions on the regulation by neurotransmitters in the hypothalamus of LHRH and somatostatin; the hormonal regulation of protein degradation in liver and in isolated cells; and the hormonal regulation of lipid mobilization from adipose tissue. Considerable chapters are devoted to steroid hormone mechanisms and the cell genetics of glucocorticoid responsiveness. The remaining chapters explore the mero-receptor and androgenic regulation in male accessory tissue. These chapters also highlight the molecular biological aspects of thyroid hormone action. This volume is an ideal source for biologists, biochemists, and researchers working in the subject and in related fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemical Actions of Hormones, Volume IV explores the significant developments toward understanding the primary effects of hormones in cellular receptors at the molecular level. This volume is composed of nine chapters, and begins with a review of the developments in affinity labeling that relate principally to the determination of the mechanisms of hormone action. The following chapters examine the role of prostaglandins in ovarian function and the methods for measuring protein synthesis and degradation in the heart and skeletal muscle. These topics are followed by discussions on the regulation of cholesterol synthesis by individual hormones; the regulatory mechanisms modulating the responsiveness of pineal gland to ß-adrenergic receptor stimulation; and the unitary mechanism of thyrotropin-releasing hormone action in target cells. The remaining chapters cover the insulin binding and insulin receptors from a variety of tissues and diverse species. These chapters also look into the physiology, molecular action, and biological effects of androgens and cyclic adenosine monophosphate. This book will be of great benefit to endocrinologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the first attempt to present in one place the clinical syndromes and the pathophysiologic basis for the "resistance states" to each of the classes of steroid hormones. Glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, androgens, estrogens, progesterone and vitamin D have widely diverse roles ranging from the control of homeostasis to reproduction and bone formation. They are similar in that they share a chemical structure and that their action is in the cell nucleus where they induce transcription of specific genes leading to synthesis of function-specific proteins. Clinical syndromes of steroid hormone resistance to androgens (complete and partial testicular feminization), aldosterone (pseudo hypoaldosteronism) and vitamin D (vitamin D-dependent rickets type II) have been known for many years. Progesterone and glucocorticoid resistance syndromes have been described only recently. Resistance to estrogens has not been reported in man or in animals. It is hoped that a detailed reexamination of what is known about each of these conditions at the clinical and molecular levels will enhance our understanding of the function of these hormones and their mechanisms of action. New insight and research initiatives should result. G.P. Chrousos D.L. Loriaus M.B. Lipsett vii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The contents of this volume are based in part on the proceedings of an International Conference held in Bethesda in the summer of 1984. This conference was sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Bethesda, Maryland.

This volume covers the biology and chemistry of purines and of their receptors broadly under these section headings: - Adenosine Receptors and Effector Systems - Adenine Nucleotide Receptors and Effector Systems - Phosphodiesterase Enzymes and Inhibitors The presentations focus on the potential development of clinically useful drugs and powerful agents that activate or block purinergic receptors or that inhibit phosphodiesterases. Xanthines (caffeine and theophylline) represent one class of such agents. This volume is for pharmacologists, biochemists, and medical chemists in research labs of universities, gov- ernment, and the pharmaceutical industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hormonal Steroids: Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and Therapeutics, Volume I focuses on various research on steroids and their biological and medical involvements. Comprised of 60 chapters, the book presents the literature of various authors who have conducted research on the relationship between hormonal steroids and biochemistry, pharmacology, and therapeutics. The discussions start with the identification of steroids with hormone-like activities. This discussion includes the nature, compositions, properties, possible uses, and reactions of these hormones when exposed to different conditions and controlled environments. The book then proceeds with discussions on synthesis and metabolism of hormonal steroids. These discussions are supported by graphical representations, reviews, recommendations, and methodologies. The book then explains the control of synthesis and release of steroid hormones. This part notes the relationship of renal and adrenal hormones; the control and production of corticosterone; neurosecretion and control of the pituitary gland; and release of ovulating hormones. The book also highlights the mechanism of steroid action, noting the probable interrelationships of steroids, nonsteroids, intermediary metabolism, and inflammation. Various research are presented on the possible clinical applications of steroids. The text is a vital reference for readers who are interested in the study of hormones.
