Book excerpt: This report supplements DMIC Report 152 which is a compilation of binary and ternary phase diagrams of columbium, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten. Forty new binary and 80 new ternary diagrams are included, some of these being revised versions of the previously published diagrams. Included with each binary diagram and with some ternary diagrams is a short discussion listing terminal solubilities and crystal struc tures of intermediate pahses. Many of the diagrams are tentative and are subject to revision as additional data become available. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To aid in quick identification and easy location of specific technical data and information in the various reports and memoranda which have been prepared and distributed by the Defense Metals Information Center, as well as by DMIC's forerunner, the Titanium Metallurgical Laboratory, a classification by major subject matter was prepared. The classification covers reports through DMIC Report 193 and memoranda through DMIC Memorandum 183. (Author).

Book Synopsis Chromium and Chromium Alloys by : D. J. Maykuth
Download or read book Chromium and Chromium Alloys written by D. J. Maykuth and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various alloying additions have been discovered which render unalloyed chromium much less susceptible to low-temperature embrittlement as well as to nitridation in air at elevated temperatures. These include additions of the Group IIIA metals, magnesia, and carbides based on the Groups IVA and VA metals. Of these additions, only the carbides contribute significantly to the hot strengthening of chromium. The combination of selected carbides and solid-solution-strengthening elements such as tungsten, molybdenum, and/or tantalum, has resulted in experimental alloys which retain useful strengths at temperatures through 1316 C (2400 F). These high strengths are achieved at some sacrifice in the low-temperature ductility of chromium. Also, despite the improvements afforded in the oxidation and nitridation resistance of chromium through alloying, no alloys are available which are capable of service in long-time exposures in air above 982 C (1800 F) without suffering some property degradation.

Book Synopsis Ultra-High Temperature Materials I by : Igor L. Shabalin
Download or read book Ultra-High Temperature Materials I written by Igor L. Shabalin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhaustive work in three volumes with featuring cross-reference system provides a thorough overview of ultra-high temperature materials – from elements and chemical compounds to alloys and composites. Topics included are physical (crystallographic, thermodynamic, thermo-physical, electrical, optical, physico-mechanical, nuclear) and chemical (solid-state diffusion, interaction with chemical elements and compounds, interaction with gases, vapours and aqueous solutions) properties of the individual physico-chemical phases and multi-phase materials with melting (or sublimation) points over or about 2500 °C. The first volume focuses on carbon (graphite/graphene) and refractory metals (W, Re, Os, Ta, Mo, Nb, Ir). The second and third volumes are dedicated solely to refractory (ceramic) compounds (oxides, nitrides, carbides, borides, silicides) and to the complex materials – refractory alloys, carbon and ceramic composites, respectively. It will be of interest to researchers, engineers, postgraduate, graduate and undergraduate students in various disciplines alike. The reader is provided with the full qualitative and quantitative assessment for the materials, which could be applied in various engineering devices and environmental conditions at ultra-high temperatures, on the basis of the latest updates in the field of physics, chemistry, materials science, nanotechnology and engineering.
Book Synopsis The Application of Ultrasonic Energy in the Deformation of Metals by : Alan R. Rosenfield
Download or read book The Application of Ultrasonic Energy in the Deformation of Metals written by Alan R. Rosenfield and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 21 a symposium was sponsored by the Bureau of Naval Weapons on the application of ultrasonic energy in the deformation of metals. At this session, a number of investigators actively working in the field reported informally on the results of their research. The reports revealed that the results achieved by incorporating ultrasonic transducers into conventional metalforming and-cutting operations are sufficiently promising that the technique merits further attention. Data are available to indicate that application of ultrasonic vibrations during metal working can increase speeds, lower forces, and improve surface finishes. All of these results have been obtained without any observed difference in properties between ultrasonically and conventionally fabricated parts. (Author).

Download or read book Vacuum Degassing in the Production of Premium-quality Steels written by P. J. O'Reilly and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report gives the experiences of several steel producers and consumers with vacuum degassing as a melting practice in the manufacture of high-strength steels for critical applications. The parameters involved in determining the effects of melting practice on mechanical properties are outlined. Pertinent melting processes are described and evaluated qualitatively. In presenting the data, vacuum degassing is compared with other melting practices such as conventional air melting and consumable-electrode vacuum-arc remelting (CEVAR). Generally, there is a trend indicating that vacuum degassing is being used in some production applications instead of air-melted or CEVAR material. In terms of higher and more uniform transverse tensile properties and impact strength, longer fatigue life, and improved cleanliness, the CEVAR alloys were the best. Vacuum degassing by any of the various methods resulted in an improvement in properties of air-melted alloys. In some instances it appeared that the quality of CEVAR alloys could be approached when stream degassing or D-H (Dortmund-Horder) treatment was applied to air melts. Recommendations are given for additional investigations on the effects of melting practice on mechanical properties of premium-quality steels. (Author).
