Download or read book The American Fantasy Tradition written by Brian M. Thomsen and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-09-13 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient tales of long-dead civilizations to the wild success of J. R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, fantasy has fired our imaginations for as long as there has been story. Whether sweeping sagas of fantastic adventures or cautionary tales told around the campfire, fantasy is deeply woven into the very fabric of humanity, wearing many faces and coming in many flavors. But what fantasy is distinctly American? The American Fantasy Tradition sets out to answer this very question. This comprehensive critical anthology of American fantasy literature applies the groundbreaking theorems of such esteemed American literary critics as Leslie Fiedler, Richard Chase, and Irving Howe to the genre of fantasy in an effort to delineate the true American tradition of fantasy from the more prominent Anglo-European canon, breaking it down into three distinctive strains: The American Tale: Folk, Tall, and Weird Stories that might be considered fables or legends, much like the epics of the Age of Heroes from the classical eras of Rome and Greece, or the tales of the fairy folk from the European tradition, or the fables of Aesop. Fantastic Americana Stories set directly within the American historic landscape, much as the Arthurian tradition is set within the confines of British history. Lands of Enchantment in Everyday Life Stories that involve what might be called the American spirit, focusing on worlds that exist in the shadows of our own, just beyond Rod Serling’s famous signpost for The Twilight Zone.

Book excerpt: This book examines the effects of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) of the European Union (EU) on the national foreign policies of Ireland and Austria. Small and neutral EU member states provide a fascinating case-study as the CFSP entails a dilemma. Their size may create assumptions that they are more likely to adopt EU policy, yet the traditional position of neutrality acts contrary to Europeanization. By concentrating on the reciprocal relationship between EU and national foreign policy, the book takes a new and innovative approach to investigate prospects for a common European foreign policy, and goes beyond an examination of changes in the national foreign policies of Ireland and Austria to provide an engaging explanation and understanding of Europeanization. Based on a comprehensive conceptual framework, this text investigates three dimensions of national foreign policy; the Europeanization of foreign policy-making, the Europeanization of foreign policy substance and effects on neutrality, to create an accessible and informed insight into the evolution of European cooperation and foreign policy, and the impact on national identity. EU Foreign Policy and the Europeanization of Neutral Stateswill be of interest to students and scholars of European Studies, International relations and Foreign Policy.

Book Synopsis Legends and Tales of the American West by : Richard Erdoes
Download or read book Legends and Tales of the American West written by Richard Erdoes and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2011-07-20 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Davy Crockett, Wild Bill Hickok, and Calamity Jane to Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, and Frank and Jesse James, here are more than 130 colorful stories of the pioneers, cowboys, outlaws, gamblers, prospectors, and lawmen who settled the wild west, creating a uniquely American hero and an enduringly fascinating folk mythology. In this wonderfully boisterous treasury of tall tales, everyone and everything is larger than life and bragging is elevated into an art form. Many of these stories are of real people and real events; more than a few, however, grew taller and funnier as they made their rounds from wagon train to campfire to rodeo to miners' quarters. But even if it is far from established that Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett were able to kill three men with one bullet or subdue ferocious grizzly bears with their fists, they come vividly to life here as beloved characters who have become part of the fabric of the American imagination. With black-and white illustrations throughout Part of the Pantheon Fairy Tale and Folklore Library

Download or read book Choices written by James Wheatley and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2021-01-11 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have enjoyed a long life that spans from the Great Depression of the 1930s, to the COVID-19 virus of 2020. I want to share my memories with my friends, family, and also the young ones. I want them to understand you don’t have to be rich to be happy. I never concerned myself with what I didn’t have, but with what I could have. This was taught to me by my Mother, as the book will demonstrate. I write this book, not about walking in someone else’s footsteps, but about the tracks I made myself. Footprints left on a sandy beach will get washed away by the rising tide, but will never erase the enjoyment you had making them. I will refer to choices I made and roads not taken. My second favorite singer, George Jones, sang about “Living and dying with the choices I’ve made.” My first favorite singer will be revealed later on. The last two lines of Robert Longley’s poem, “The Next Chapter” says it all: “It is you who writes your story, and you who controls your fate.”
