Book Synopsis Isaac Leeser and the Making of American Judaism by : Lance J. Sussman
Download or read book Isaac Leeser and the Making of American Judaism written by Lance J. Sussman and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1996-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than any other person of his time, Isaac Leeser 0806-1868) envisioned the development of a major center of Jewish culture and religious activity in the United States. He single-handedly provided American Jews with many of the basic religious texts, institutions, and conceptual tools they needed to construct the cultural foundation of what would later emerge as the largest Jewish community in the history of the Jewish people. Born in Germany, Leeser arrived in the United States in 1824. At that time, the American Jewish community was still a relatively unimportant outpost of Jewish life. No sustained or coordinated effort was being made to protect and expand Jewish political rights in America. The community was small, weak, and seemingly not interested in evolving into a cohesive, dynamic center of Jewish life. Leeser settled in Philadelphia where he sought to unite American Jews and the growing immigrant community under the banner of modern Sephardic Orthodoxy. Thoroughly Americanized prior to the first period of mass Jewish immigration to the United States between 1830 and 1854, Leeser served as a bridge between the old native-born and new immigrant American Jews. Among the former, he inspired a handful to work for the revitalization of Judaism in America. To the latter, he was a spiritual leader, a champion of tradition, and a guide to life in a new land. Leeser had a decisive impact on American Judaism during a career that spanned nearly forty years. The outstanding Jewish religious leader in America prior to the Civil War, he shaped both the American Jewish community and American Judaism. He sought to professionalize the American rabbinate, introduced vernacular preaching into the North American synagogue, and produced the first English language translation of the entire Hebrew Bible. As editor and publisher of The Occident, Leeser also laid the groundwork for the now vigorous and thriving American Jewish press. Leeser's influence extended well beyond the American Jewish community An outspoken advocate of religious liberty, he defended Jewish civil rights, sought to improve Jewish-Christian relations, and was an early advocate of modern Zionism. At the international level, Leeser helped mobilize Jewish opinion during the Damascus Affair and corresponded with a number of important Jewish leaders in Great Britain and western Europe. In the first biography of Isaac Leeser, Lance Sussman makes extensive use of archival and primary sources to provide a thorough study of a man who has been largely ignored by traditional histories. Isaac Leeser and the Making of American Judaism also tells an important part of the story of Judaism's response to the challenge of political freedom and social acceptance in a new, modern society Judaism itself was transformed as it came to terms with America, and the key figure in this process was Isaac Leeser.

Book Synopsis Instruction in the Mosaic Religion (Classic Reprint) by : J. Johlson
Download or read book Instruction in the Mosaic Religion (Classic Reprint) written by J. Johlson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Instruction in the Mosaic Religion IN an age, when science of every kind is pursued with avidity, no astonishment can be manifested at the attempt of an Israelite to give his brethren a clear knowledge of the religion which they have inherited from their ancestors; Since, if it is of any importance Whatever to any portion of the human family to profess a certain creed, it is also highly necessary, that the principal features at least of this creed Should be familiar to all who profess the same. I claim no great literary merit on account of the present per formance for, although the labour bestowed on it has been very great, and considerable additions and alterations made (particularly to the tenth and eleventh chapters), yet, the road was already so clearly pointed out by the very learned author of the original, that I had nothing more to do, than to make as good a use of the materials, as my limited abilities and inexperience would permit. How I have succeeded, I leave others to judge and claim no par ticular indulgence, because it is my first literary performance of any note. But at the same time I beg leave to state, that I shall not hold myself responsible for any difference of Opinion, which may happen to exist between myself and any of my readers; and I hope, that this difference Will not, as in justice it should not, deprive me of as candid and impartial a judgment, as though we agreed upon every point. If I have not obtained the good opinion of the public, I have endeavoured to deserve it. For in the first place, Ihave spared no application to render the work, though small in size, as perfect as I could possibly make it; _and next, I flatter myself, that the typographical execution is of such general correctness as will strike every one as worthy of commendation. I can safely aver, that the Hebrew, which is distributed throughout these pages, will be found to be as free from errors as can well be expected, for every passage has been carefully revised with the best editions of the Bible. That some small errors may nevertheless have escaped both in the English and Hebrew, despite of the care bestowed upon both, I cannot doubt but no one can demand perfection, when perfection is beyond the reachof man, and literary labours must share the fate ofevery other human undertaking. Book Synopsis Conscience and Courage by : Eva Fogelman
Download or read book Conscience and Courage written by Eva Fogelman and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this brilliantly researched and insightful book, psychologist Eva Fogelman presents compelling stories of rescuers of Jews during the Holocaust--and offers a revealing analysis of their motivations. Based on her extensive experience as a therapist treating Jewish survivors of the Holocaust and those who helped them, Fogelman delves into the psychology of altruism, illuminating why these rescuers chose to act while others simply stood by. While analyzing motivations, Conscience And Courage tells the stories of such little-known individuals as Stefnaia Podgorska Burzminska, a Polish teenager who hid thirteen Jews in her home; Alexander Roslan, a dealer in the black market who kept uprooting his family to shelter three Jewish children in his care, as well as more heralded individuals such as Oskar Schindler, Raoul Wallenberg, and Miep Gies. Speaking to the same audience that flocked to Steven Spielberg's Academy Award-winning movie, Schindler's List, Conscience And Courage is the first book to go beyond the stories to answer the question: Why did they help?
Book Synopsis Victims and Survivors by : Bob Moore
Download or read book Victims and Survivors written by Bob Moore and published by Hodder Education. This book was released on 1997 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Diary of Anne Frank' remains an icon of Holocaust literature, yet comparatively little is known about the wider circumstances in which the individual tragedy of the Frank family was played out. The debate that has retained the greatest popular and scholarly significance addresses aparadox evident when comparison is made between Jewish mortality in the Netherlands and that in neighbouring European states. How was it possible, in a country proud of its traditions of liberalism and tolerance, that such a large proportion of its Jewish citizens could fall victim to Nazigenocide, when those in France and Belgium fared markedly better? Bob Moore's comprehensive study, the first in English in nearly 30 years, examines all the central elements of the debate: the nature of the Nazi persecuters, their victims, and the specific circumstances of the German occupation of the Netherlands in an attempt to answer this question. Bringingtogether the work of Dutch and other scholars, the book also charts the development of Nazi policies in the Netherlands and their effects on those who perished and on the few who managed to survive.
