Book Synopsis France Under Recession: 1981-1986 by : John Tuppen
Download or read book France Under Recession: 1981-1986 written by John Tuppen and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1988-05-16 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the substantial changes that occurred in France during the period in which a left wing president and government controlled the nations destiny. In their quest for a solution to the countrys mounting difficulties, the Socialists adopted a very different range of policies from their predecessors. Tuppen appraises the recent pattern of social and economic development in France, particularly the impact of recession and the socialist prescription for revival. Each chapter focuses on a limited number of significant changes and key issues that have become the subject of extensive debate. Particular emphasis is given to controversial issues such as unemployment, immigration, economic regeneration, urban renewal, and decentralization, and case studies are used extensively to help illustrate these topics. Finally, where appropriate, analysis is carried out at a regional as well as national level, lending spatial dimension to the study.

Book excerpt: For some, Tahiti, New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna are idyllic tropical islands with a French flavour, while for others they represent continuing French colonialism, thwarted independence movements and nuclear testing. This book looks at the realities of the French territories in Oceania, and the former Franco-British condominium of the New Hebrides (now Vanuatu), as well as changing French policy in the region. This study is based on published sources as well as archival material and interviews, and is a sequel to the highly praised The French Presence in the South Pacific, 1842-1940.

Book Synopsis Crisis and Change in Rural Europe by : Richard Black
Download or read book Crisis and Change in Rural Europe written by Richard Black and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the marginal upland regions of southern Europe are facing a growing agrarian crisis. Drawing on an extensive period of original field research in northern Portugal, a theory of crisis is put forward, which draws on recent advances in the fields of geography, rural sociology, and development studies. In an in-depth analysis of the Serra do Alvao, the importance of external political economic factors are highlighted. It is argued that traditional agriculture systems have been undermined, and farmers marginalized, without creating the conditions for restructuring and more efficient production. A strategy for economic growth which prioritizes increases in productivity is rejected, in favour of a more flexible approach to development.

Book Synopsis Territorial Implications of High Speed Rail by : José M. de Ureña
Download or read book Territorial Implications of High Speed Rail written by José M. de Ureña and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Speed Rail's (HSR) main objective is to attract air passengers between big metropolitan areas however the main territorial implications in many cases occur not in these metropolitan areas but in the intermediate cities. These implications open up new spatial planning possibilities such as decentralization, new regional centres and urban renewal projects. This book presents the experience of 20 years of HSR in Spain including some explicit information, arguments and conclusions derived from HSR in other European Countries. It debates the HSR territorial implications at three scales: national, regional and local, thus being of interest for strategic debates at those scales, such as the decision of new national lines, the pros and cons of deviating the line to reach minor intermediate cities or the selection of precise locations for new stations and the development projects in their surroundings. Comparisons with the recent changes in accessibility, spatial distribution of population and activities, are made with mobility for working purposes and with the characteristics of the HSR passengers. This book also examines the actions, strategies and urban projects that medium size cities can use to make best use of HSR opportunities, synthesising the experience of HSR medium cities in Spain and Europe. The book's conclusions will be of interest, over and above scholars, to transport infrastructure decision makers, city and regional planners and managers, and transport companies.

Book excerpt: Reproductions of 28 articles published between 1938 and 1998, but mostly in the 1980s and 1990s, were selected to cover issues thought important in understanding the economic, commercial, and policy analysis of rail transport in industrialized countries. Engineering and operational issues are not covered. Despite the title of the series, the articles most widely considered classic are not included, especially when a more recent paper covers the same issues to greater advantage. Little known papers are also included if deemed to make an important contribution to the present day analysis. The sections cover costs and productivity, pricing, regulation and privatization, economic rail demand models, disaggregate choice modelling, and investment. There is no subject index. Book Synopsis Cities Enterprise and Society by : Frank Moulaert
Download or read book Cities Enterprise and Society written by Frank Moulaert and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays provides a review and restatement of concepts and analytical insights about the relations between the dynamics of the production system and urban society. A number of questions underline the arrangement of the book, and constitute the central debates in the individual chapters. These questions include: how have large cities and city systems developed in the context of economic globalization and the restructuring processes of the international economy?; what are the restructuring strategies of firms within the urban economy?; how have social and political harmonization and polarization in urban society been affected by entrepreneurial strategies?; and what has been the response of other urban participants, and in particular local authorities to economic restructuring?
