The Robert Wright memoirs are an interesting and sometimes humorous window into the life of the European pioneers of Northern Rhodesia and the British East African Protectorate from 1894 to 1904. Robert and his brother David were initially employed as coffee farmers in the Blantyre district. Their sense of adventure soon led them to start a business hunting trophy animals and trading for ivory and rubber from Lake Tanganyika to the Katanga province of the Congo. Robert was a keen photographer and fortunately many of his photographs have survived and are included in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "An interesting story...one of the most important records of African travel in recent years." -World Review, 1904 "A plain, straightforward account of hardships undergone, difficulties overcome, of indomitable pluck and indefatigable perseverance, and the inevitable ultimate success of sheer doggedness." - Academy Review, 1904 " A permanent and valuable addition to the literature of African travel." -Morning Post In Captain Gibbons'' 1898 book "Exploration and Hunting in Central Africa" we have the story of a man of action, led partly by the desire for big game hunting and adventure, and partly by a laudable desire to make a map, to visit a country which was included in the British Empire, but which had not yet been occupied save by missionaries and occasional big game hunters and explorers such as Livingstone and Selous. In 1896, Alfred St. Hill Gibbons (1858-1916), best known as the explorer of the Upper Zamboni who completed the work which Livingstone had begun, went exploring and hunting among the head waters of the Zambesi and the northern tributaries of that mighty river. His narrative is full of hunting stories, some of thrilling interest. The writer does not claim to be a very good shot, but in two instances he establishes a reputation for steadiness of nerve under the most trying circumstances-namely, when charged on two separate occasions by a wounded lioness and by a wounded buffalo. In describing a run-in with a wounded buffalo, Gibbons writes: "After a short, sharp run both the beast and myself had halted about twenty-five yards apart, I vainly endeavouring to extract a jammed cartridge case from my rifle. It was only just removed as the wounded cow, sighting me, raised her muzzle and, with extended neck and horns thrown back, charged. I stooped down and waited till she was a couple of paces away . . . ." In describing a man-eating lion and his hunting it, Gibbons writes: "In one case he actually removed a reed constructed door from a native''s hut, walked in, seized a woman, and carried her off to his lair in some dense thorn-bush a short way from the mission station. On a previous occasion another woman was taken by him when only a few yards from the stockade. ... A huge lion bounded down the tunnel and took up his position immediately behind the carcase. Mr. Baldwin stood his ground but did not fire, and although the animal was not six feet ...." Captain Gibbons had excellent sport with all sorts, from elephants downward, on the upper reaches of the Zambesi, within a few days'' boating of the potentate''s chief kraal. The buffaloes swarmed; they ran in herds of from three hundred to four hundred, and they found safe refuges in the reedy swamps which were also sanctuaries of the sea-cows. There and elsewhere there were lions in superabundance. The book contains an excellent essay on the country- its character, climate, and prospects, as well as a description of various tribes in the Barotse Empire. Gibbons also authored another book on his explorations in Africa: *Africa from south to north through Marotseland Gibbons'' "Exploration and Hunting in Central Africa" is a well-regarded historical source, being cited in the following modern works: *Fire-Eaters: Blacksmiths and the Products of the Forge in Pre-Colonial Zambia, Mwelwa C. Book excerpt: Excerpt from After Big Game in Central Africa: Records of a Sportsman From August 1894 to November 1897, When Crossing the Dark Continent From the Mouth of the Zambesi to the French Congo During the accomplishment of the mission with which I was charged by the Minister of Public Instruction, I travelled in Central Africa continuously in wild countries, far from civilised regions, and often, even, from districts inhabited by natives. I was thus able to devote myself wholly to my ruling passion - the pursuit of big game; - and I had the good fortune to be able to collect for the Paris Museum specimens of large fauna, having on this occasion, as on previous occasions, shot many animals. Naturally, my occupation was not exempt from danger. So I thought that readers who gave a good reception to a work of mine published four years ago would like to return with me on a journey through the African bush. Book excerpt: This book places lion conservation and the relationship between people and lions both in historical context and in the context of the contemporary politics of conservation in Africa. The killing of Cecil the Lion in July 2015 brought such issues to the public’s attention. Were lions threatened in the wild and what was the best form of conservation? How best can lions be saved from extinction in the wild in Africa amid rural poverty, precarious livelihoods for local communities and an expanding human population? This book traces man’s relationship with lions through history, from hominids, to the Romans, through colonial occupation and independence, to the present day. It concludes with an examination of the current crisis of conservation and the conflict between Western animal welfare concepts and sustainable development, thrown into sharp focus by the killing of Cecil the lion. Through this historical account, Keith Somerville provides a coherent, evidence-based assessment of current human-lion relations, providing context to the present situation. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of environmental and African history, wildlife conservation, environmental management and political ecology, as well as the general reader.

Book excerpt: Humans and Hyenas examines the origins and development of the relationship between the two to present an accurate and realistic picture of the hyena and its interactions with people. The hyena is one of the most maligned, misrepresented and defamed mammals. It is still, despite decades of research-led knowledge, seen as a skulking, cowardly scavenger rather than a successful hunter with complex family and communal systems. Hyenas are portrayed as sex-shifting deviants, grave robbers and attackers of children in everything from African folk tales through Greek and Roman accounts of animal life, to Disney’s The Lion King depicting hyenas with a lack of respect and disgust, despite the reality of their behaviour and social structures. Combining the personal, in-depth mining of scientific papers about the three main species and historical accounts, Keith Somerville delves into our relationship with hyenas from the earliest records from millennia ago, through the accounts by colonisers, to contemporary coexistence, where hyenas and humans are forced into ever closer proximity due to shrinking habitats and loss of prey. Are hyenas fated to retain their bad image or can their amazing ability to adapt to humans more successfully than lions and other predators lead to a shift in perspective? This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in the environmental sciences, conservation biology, and wildlife and conservation issues.

Book excerpt: This book recovers the multiplicity of meanings embedded in colonial hunting and the power it symbolized by examining both the incorporation and representation of British women hunters in the sport and how African people leveraged British hunters' dependence on their labor and knowledge to direct the impact and experience of hunting.
