Here is premier horror-sci-fi writer A. R. Morlan's introduction to some of Pop Culture's most famous (and infamous) practitioners, from Marilyn Monroe’s poignant farewell in "The Sweet End of the Lollipop," to Andy Warhol’s wandering spirit in Norm Littman's 15 Minutes, and Jim Morrison's incorruptible presence in "He's Hot, He's Sexy, He's..." Morlan captures the essence of each cause celebre, including a few monsters thrown in for good measure: H. P. Lovecraft's Dunwich Horror monster, in "Taking Down the Book of the Rough Beast" and Adolph Hitler in "The Gemütlichkeit Escape." Toss in a sci-fi classic "The Time-Vacation Trilogy," and you have the recipe for imaginative writing at its best.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of more than twenty books and a revered contributor to numerous national publications, Charles Bowden (1945–2014) used his keen storyteller’s eye to reveal both the dark underbelly and the glorious determination of humanity, particularly in the borderlands between the United States and Mexico. In America’s Most Alarming Writer, key figures in his life—including his editors, collaborators, and other writers—deliver a literary wake for the man who inspired them throughout his forty-year career. Part revelation, part critical assessment, the fifty essays in this collection span the decades from Bowden’s rise as an investigative journalist through his years as a singular voice of unflinching honesty about natural history, climate change, globalization, drugs, and violence. As the Chicago Tribune noted, “Bowden wrote with the intensity of Joan Didion, the voracious hunger of Henry Miller, the feral intelligence and irony of Hunter Thompson, and the wit and outrage of Edward Abbey.” An evocative complement to The Charles Bowden Reader, the essays and photographs in this homage brilliantly capture the spirit of a great writer with a quintessentially American vision. Bowden is the best writer you’ve (n)ever read.

Book excerpt: On May 5, 1993, second-graders Christopher Byers, Stevie Branch, and Michael Moore disappeared from their West Memphis, Arkansas, homes. The following afternoon, their nude, beaten, and bound bodies were discovered in a drainage ditch less than a mile away. After a troublesome confession, three local teenagers, later dubbed the "West Memphis Three," were arrested, tried, and convicted in early 1994. Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley received life sentences, while ringleader Damien Echols went to death row. Three years later, the documentary film "Paradise Lost" premiered on HBO, and the effect on viewers was dramatic. Many became skeptical of the verdicts and also felt one of the fathers of the victims was a better suspect-John Mark Byers. In Untying the Knot, author Greg Day tells the true story of John Mark Byers and the about-face he made to free the men convicted of the crime. Day exposes the propaganda campaign used to convince a gullible public that Byers was complicit in the deaths of his wife and son. Based on court transcripts and hours of personal interviews, Untying the Knot explores all the case evidence while interweaving dialogues and statements. It traces the life of Byers from his roots in rural Arkansas, to his son's murder and the death of his wife, to his ultimate imprisonment in 1999. It reveals a man redeemed by prison and whose change of heart changed his life. "Day has captured the essence of a towering personality engulfed by an impossible situation. John Mark Byers is an immensely complex character, and Untying the Knot pulls no punches in revealing the man in all his seeming contradictions." -John Douglas, Mindhunter

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TV’s most successful comedy producer Chuck Lorre delivers a hilarious collection of vanity cards in print for the first time. Since 1997, fans of some of the most popular sitcoms ever broadcast — The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, Mike & Molly and Dharma & Greg — have been granted a fleeting glimpse each week into the unfettered and uncompromising mind of the incredibly prolific creative force behind those series, Chuck Lorre. That's because Lorre devotes exactly one second of airtime per show to expressing his deepest thoughts at the end of the credits on his now-infamous vanity cards, which for many years could only be enjoyed by freeze-framing on a VCR and squinting to read the tiny, wobbling words. Now, for the first time ever, hundreds of Lorre's witty and insightful musings have been gathered together in a limited-edition, slipcase book from Chuck Lorre himself that reveals a hilarious, thought-provoking and scandalous body of work unlike any other creative endeavor. Veering from philosophical treatises to personal revelations to the occasional furious diatribe, Lorre never shies away from controversy — even in the face of network censorship, as has often happened. But never fear: Every word on the original vanity cards included in this curated selection is here — even the censored texts that never made it to air. Enhanced with sly, ingenious illustrations and designs that capture the off-kilter essence of Lorre's bite-sized dispatches, What Doesn't Kill Us Makes Us Bitter will change the way you think about life, the universe and TV — or at least it'll save your eyesight.

She stops, shrieks hysterically into the camera, then solemnly says, "Good evening, I am Vampira." Her real name is Maila Nurmi and she was the first in a long line of television horror movie hosts, commonly seen on independent stations' late-night "grade Z" offerings dressed as some zany ghoul or mad scientist. This book covers the major hosts in detail, along with styles and show themes. Merchandise tie-in and fan reactions are also chronicled. The appendices list film and record credits.

Book excerpt: Ex-con ruins racist gang! He pranks the hell out of them. Comic, yet touching. (This is subtle literary fiction.) Members of an all-white prison gang threaten Patrick, a white ex-con who deals meth in San Diego and who likes all races. Patrick quits crime and befriends the police. Then he and a con artist legally prank and harass the racists. When a law-abiding Asian American woman informs Patrick that he got her pregnant, he immediately marries her. Asians now in his family, Patrick destroys the racist gang, pranking them with a vengeance, until they get hurt, go straight, or get arrested. Review: Watch out! Eric Hertz is a master of satire. Pranked Straight is a scathing lampoon, and Eric's wit is extra dry (so bitterly dry you might not notice it). But the story is rolling, fluid, and exciting. This is an interracial adventure. It's like George Orwell meets Joseph Wambaugh (with a dash of Harper Lee). But this story is written in a modern style, set in San Diego. I especially admire the endearing way Mr. Hertz portrays Mexican gangsters in this novel. Juan Neptune - Mexico City Literary Club

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Think of this collection as a literary grab-bag...chances are there's at least one story you'll like/love/enjoy, others which will amuse you, still others which might disturb, and perhaps one or so which you probably won't like. While the bulk of my fictional output over the years has been roughly divided between horror/dark fantasy, science fiction and erotica (of various types), a few pieces have either slipped through the genre cracks, or simply didn't make it into my other collections, either due to content, length, or availability at the time I was assembling those other collections. I've done a couple of western stories, and some undefined things which cover multiple genres, and some poetry which didn't fit in my other collections either -- there's even a short non-fiction piece about my beloved, late cat Bruiser (the same cat featured in my novel The Amulet), as well as a chapter from an outlined but never written Ewerton novel." -- A.R. Morlan, from the Introduction
