As she comes back to visit her friends and family, she gets a call from her closest childhood friend, Shaniqua. Courtney excitedly agrees to go out for old times' sake and heads on over to her friend's house. Once there, she meets Shaniqua's grandfather, Tyrone, an old black man in a wheelchair. The reunion is cut short as Shaniqua has to pick up a call from her mother. While she's out of the room, Tyrone shows Courtney why he's in a wheelchair, his knees. But to show off the scars on his knees, he has to take off his pants and Courtney gets a good look at something thick and long beside his thighs. Shaniqua returns to let Courtney know that she has to go pick up her mom and asks for a rain check. Courtney agrees but, tells her friend that she'll stay and watch over Tyrone. She wants to see if her experience as a nurse can help him. After Shaniqua leaves, Courtney takes a closer look at Tyrone, and what she finds is quite the... experience.

Book excerpt: Michele is a New Jersey transplant from Wisconsin and has a bachelorette party she has to fly back to at home but she makes a stop to fill up her gas tank in a fairly shady part of town. As she waits for her car to be filled up, she sees an adult store nearby and decides to quickly get a gag gift for the bachelorette. After a quick flirting session with the gas pump attendant, a young built black man, she runs over to the adult store. After picking out an enormous gag gift, she heads back to her car and tosses the gift into her back seat. Unfortunately for her, the gift rolls out and the black gas attendant laughs, claiming he has a bigger tool. Michele is shocked by his blunt comment, but laughs it off. Before she drives out, he offers to give her the time of her life, unbelievable pleasures that only a black man can provide. Michele explains that it's a misunderstanding and the toy in the backseat is just a joke gift. As she begins to drive out of the gas station, she wonders if what he said was true. Can a man truly possess something so large between their leg? It has been quite a while since she broke up with her ex and her body did crave a man's touch... As she gets lost in her thoughts, she soon parks her car and the gas pump attendant walks by. Michele takes his offer and he points her over to a nearby motel. Will the young black stallion live up to his promises?

First published in English in 1967, this book provides an unsurpassed study of the psychology of racism using scientific analysis and poetic grace.Franz Fanon identifies a devastating pathology at the heart of Western culture, a denial of difference, that persists to this day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to explore the history of a powerful category of illicit sex in America’s past: liaisons between Southern white women and black men. Martha Hodes tells a series of stories about such liaisons in the years before the Civil War, explores the complex ways in which white Southerners tolerated them in the slave South, and shows how and why these responses changed with emancipation. Hodes provides details of the wedding of a white servant-woman and a slave man in 1681, an antebellum rape accusation that uncovered a relationship between an unmarried white woman and a slave, and a divorce plea from a white farmer based on an adulterous affair between his wife and a neighborhood slave. Drawing on sources that include courtroom testimony, legislative petitions, pardon pleas, and congressional testimony, she presents the voices of the authorities, eyewitnesses, and the transgressors themselves—and these voices seem to say that in the slave South, whites were not overwhelmingly concerned about such liaisons, beyond the racial and legal status of the children that were produced. Only with the advent of black freedom did the issue move beyond neighborhood dramas and into the arena of politics, becoming a much more serious taboo than it had ever been before. Hodes gives vivid examples of the violence that followed the upheaval of war, when black men and white women were targeted by the Ku Klux Klan and unprecedented white rage and terrorism against such liaisons began to erupt. An era of terror and lynchings was inaugurated, and the legacy of these sexual politics lingered well into the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: "Clarence King is a hero of nineteenth-century western history. Brilliant scientist and witty conversationalist, bestselling author and architect of the great surveys that mapped the West after the Civil War, King hid a secret from his Gilded Age cohorts and prominent Newport family: for thirteen years he lived a double life--as the celebrated white Clarence King and as a black Pullman porter and steelworker. Unable to marry the black woman he loved, the fair-haired, blue-eyed King passed as a Negro, revealing his secret to his wife Ada only on his deathbed. Historian Martha Sandweiss is the first writer to uncover the life that King tried so hard to conceal. She reveals the complexity of a man who, while publicly espousing a personal dream of a uniquely American amalgam of white and black, hid his love for his wife and their five biracial children"--Publisher description

Book excerpt: From one of our most important scholars and civil rights activist icon, a powerful study of the women’s liberation movement and the tangled knot of oppression facing Black women. “Angela Davis is herself a woman of undeniable courage. She should be heard.”—The New York Times Angela Davis provides a powerful history of the social and political influence of whiteness and elitism in feminism, from abolitionist days to the present, and demonstrates how the racist and classist biases of its leaders inevitably hampered any collective ambitions. While Black women were aided by some activists like Sarah and Angelina Grimke and the suffrage cause found unwavering support in Frederick Douglass, many women played on the fears of white supremacists for political gain rather than take an intersectional approach to liberation. Here, Davis not only contextualizes the legacy and pitfalls of civil and women’s rights activists, but also discusses Communist women, the murder of Emmitt Till, and Margaret Sanger’s racism. Davis shows readers how the inequalities between Black and white women influence the contemporary issues of rape, reproductive freedom, housework and child care in this bold and indispensable work.

"So delicious that it feels illicit . . . Raven Leilani’s first novel reads like summer: sentences like ice that crackle or melt into a languorous drip; plot suddenly, wildly flying forward like a bike down a hill." —Jazmine Hughes, The New York Times Book Review No one wants what no one wants. And how do we even know what we want? How do we know we’re ready to take it? Edie is stumbling her way through her twenties—sharing a subpar apartment in Bushwick, clocking in and out of her admin job, making a series of inappropriate sexual choices. She is also haltingly, fitfully giving heat and air to the art that simmers inside her. And then she meets Eric, a digital archivist with a family in New Jersey, including an autopsist wife who has agreed to an open marriage—with rules. As if navigating the constantly shifting landscapes of contemporary sexual manners and racial politics weren’t hard enough, Edie finds herself unemployed and invited into Eric’s home—though not by Eric. She becomes a hesitant ally to his wife and a de facto role model to his adopted daughter. Edie may be the only Black woman young Akila knows. Irresistibly unruly and strikingly beautiful, razor-sharp and slyly comic, sexually charged and utterly absorbing, Raven Leilani’s Luster is a portrait of a young woman trying to make sense of her life—her hunger, her anger—in a tumultuous era. It is also a haunting, aching description of how hard it is to believe in your own talent, and the unexpected influences that bring us into ourselves along the way. “An irreverent intergenerational tale of race and class that’s blisteringly smart and fan-yourself sexy.” —Michelle Hart, O: The Oprah Magazine
