Book excerpt: This communiqué provides a summary of the production- and consumption-based greenhouse gas emissions accounts for Prince Edward Island, as well as their associated trade flows. It is part of a series of communiqués profiling the Canadian provinces and territories. In simplest terms, a production-based emissions account measures the quantity of greenhouse gas emissions produced in Prince Edward Island. In contrast, a consumptionbased emissions account measures the quantity of greenhouse gas emissions generated during the production process for final goods and services that are consumed in Prince Edward Island through household purchases, investment by firms and government spending. Trade flows refer to the movement of emissions that are produced in Prince Edward Island but which support consumption in a different province, territory or country (and vice versa). For example, emissions associated with the production of Prince Edward Island crops that are exported to Nova Scotia for processing and sale are recorded as a trade flow from Prince Edward Island to Nova Scotia. Moving in the opposite direction, emissions associated with the generation of electricity in New Brunswick that is exported to Prince Edward Island for sale to a Prince Edward Island homeowner are recorded as a trade flow from New Brunswick to Prince Edward Island. For further details on these results in a national context, the methodology for generating them and their policy implications, please see the companion papers to this communiqué series: (1) Fellows and Dobson (2017); and (2) Dobson and Fellows (2017). Additionally, the consumption emissions and trade flow data for each of the provinces and territories are available on University of Calgary, The School of Public Policy Publications website.

It is part of a series of communiqués profiling the Canadian provinces and territories. In contrast, a consumption-based emissions account measures the quantity of greenhouse gas emissions generated during the production process for final goods and services that are consumed in the territories through household purchases, investment by firms and government spending. Trade flows refer to the movement of emissions that are produced in the territories but which support consumption in a different province or country (and vice versa). For example, emissions associated with the production of gold in Nunavut that is exported to Quebec for processing and sale are recorded as a trade flow from the territories to Quebec. Moving in the opposite direction, emissions associated with the production of British Columbia natural gas that is sold to a Northwest Territories utility and used to generate electricity for homes in the Northwest Territories are recorded as a trade flow from British Columbia to the territories. Book excerpt: More than 1,200 sawmills produce the bulk of U.S. and Canadian softwood lumber. The maps and tables in this report show the location and size of these mills by State and Province. Analysis of timber inventories in relation to use shows a close correspondence between pricing and use intensity. In some Southern States, the intensity of use is approaching recent growth levels. Lumber capacity grew by 13% between 1995 and 2000. The fastest growth occurred in some Canadian regions, while the least growth took place in the western parts of the United States and Canada. In 2001, capacity appears headed for a decline as at least 18 sawmills closed as a result of poor market conditions.

Download or read book The Discovery of Significant Oil and Gas Fields in the United States written by Richard Nehring and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quantitative assessment of the ultimate conventional petroleum resources of the United States. Using a database listing all the significant oil and gas fields, the authors describe what has already been discovered, interpret why these discoveries happened when they did, and assess the remaining geologic prospects. U.S. petroleum resources are highly concentrated in a few major provinces and in a relatively small number of giant and large fields. Since the peaks in oil discoveries about 1930 and natural gas about 1950, both the number of discoveries and the amounts discovered have declined substantially. The authors conclude that most of the conventional petroleum that will ultimately be produced has already been discovered and made recoverable. Ultimate recovery will most likely be between 210 and 285 billion barrels of petroleum liquids and 920 to 1,090 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, as compared with known recovery of 175 billion barrels and 750 trillion cubic feet.
