Book Synopsis Salons, History, and the Creation of Seventeenth-Century France by : Faith E. Beasley
Download or read book Salons, History, and the Creation of Seventeenth-Century France written by Faith E. Beasley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first half of the book is a detailed study of how the salons influenced the development of literature. Beasley argues that many women were not only writers, they also served as critics for the literary sphere as a whole. In the second half of the book Beasley examines how historians and literary critics subsequently portrayed the seventeenth century literary realm, which became identified with the great reign of Louis XIV and designated the official canon of French literature. Beasley argues that in a rewriting of this past, the salons were reconfigured in order to advance an alternative view of this premier moment of French culture and of the literary masterpieces that developed out of it. Through her analysis of how the seventeenth century salon has been defined and transmitted to posterity, Beasley illuminates facets of France's collective memory, and the powers that constituted it in the past and that are still working to define it today.

Download or read book Just Words written by Robert W. Greene and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are the words that a novelist uses adequate to his or her elusive subject&—the human condition? Are they pertinent, accurate, invariably fair, unflinchingly honest? Or do the novelist's words execute essentially formal maneuvers, engaging our interest through their patterns rather than their reach? And what about a possible third, synthesizing option? Robert W. Greene discovers that the two apparently divergent intentions in question (metalinguistic vs. moralistic) often paradoxically coexist in French fiction. Also, no doubt because it is more consistently self-conscious than that of any previous era, the fiction of twentieth-century France seems to illustrate this convergence with special brillance. From L'lmmoralist (1902) to L'Usage de la parole (1980) Greene explores combinations and permutations of moralistic analysis and metalinguistic commentary in a particular sequence of prose narrative. Along the way, he observes Gide, Proust, Malraux, Camus, Duras, and Sarraute, each in his or her own fashion, moving ceaselessly back and forth between soundings of the heart and diagnoses of the tongue.

Book Synopsis Gender-Based Differences in Exposure to and Usage of Camfranglais in Yaoundé by : Gardy Stein
Download or read book Gender-Based Differences in Exposure to and Usage of Camfranglais in Yaoundé written by Gardy Stein and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-18 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly engaging and innovative book about the Cameroonian youth language Camfranglais explores gender-based differences in exposure to, and usage of, the variety through a comparative study. It thus adopts a rare gender-based approach to the highly complex linguistic phenomenon Camfranglais, a mix of French, Verlan, English, Pidgin and Cameroonian languages. While youth language studies flourish in sociolinguistic research, this book’s explicit focus on female speakers, their linguistic attitudes and experiences of exclusion, is unique. It investigates which factors influence language choice among young, urban speakers and especially what contributes to the overall male dominance in the usage of Camfranglais. To achieve this goal, the attitudes of both adolescents and adults as well as the channels of reproduction and distribution of the variety are examined. A special focus is laid on the processes of conscious transformation and exclusion by which male speakers try to restrict the access for female speakers. The book will appeal to academic scholars from a wide variety of fields, such as (African) linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and gender-studies, as well as the general reader who wants to learn about an exciting language contact scenario and its outcome.
