Book excerpt: This study assessed the safety impact and performance of three different bicycle-specific intersection treatments (bike boxes, mixing zones, and bicycle signals) using surrogate safety measures (i.e., bicycle-vehicle conflicts and other non-crash measures). To date, limited research had been conducted to analyze how these treatments along with traffic characteristics (e.g., bicycle, pedestrian, and vehicle volumes) impact the frequency and severity bicycle-vehicle conflicts, and research was needed to provide practitioners guidance on when and where to install these treatments. To develop this guidance, this project analyzed data collected from three sources: data reduced from videos at 12 field study sites, microsimulation modeling, and a bicycling simulator experiment. Through estimation of Poisson regression models and other statistical analyses of these data, guidance was developed which provides practitioners information on when and where to consider installation of these treatments based on bicycle, vehicle, and pedestrian volumes, road user speeds, and other bicyclist behavioral characteristics.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of this research was to find out the characteristics of bicycle-related crashes and improve safety and comfort for bicyclists around signalized intersections in Louisville, KY. At first, the benefits of bicycling for accessibility, health, environment and traffic were discussed. Plans made by a number of states, regions and local governments for encouraging people to use bicycles as an alternative to motor-vehicles were introduced. Emphases were put on the introduction of the Louisville Metro Bike Master Plan, which aimed to increase bicycling activity throughout all parts of Louisville by making it a fun, comfortable and accessible mode of travel, and to simultaneously reduce the number of cyclists killed and injured in crashes with motor vehicles. Second, an elaborative literature interview was made to look for the reasons which caused crashes between bicyclists and drivers. The conclusion was that a large percentage of bicyclists-related crashes happened at intersections. The most important reason for bicyclists-related crashes was drivers' failing to yield when they were entering turning movements. Third, research for possible solutions which were used to improve safety for bicyclists was made. Studies which evaluated the effectiveness of those solutions were discussed. Fourth, in order to determine the characteristics of bicyclists-related crashes in Louisville, crash data of 10 years (from 2003 to 2012) was collected from the Kentucky Collision Analysis for the Public. Bicycle-related crashes in Louisville were most prevalent in the summer months, on weekdays and in the afternoon peak period in clear weather conditions. Turning-right was one of three highest possible pre-crash maneuvers in all bicycle-related crashes in Louisville The most important factor causing bicyclists-related crashes was motorists' inattentiveness, or failing to yield the right-of-way to bicyclists. Bicyclists' inattentiveness or failing to yield the right-of-way was also important for bicyclists-related crashes. Fifth, surveys were made four times to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly-developed countermeasure for bicyclists' safety. The conclusion was that this countermeasure for bicyclists' safety couldn't influence the distance from the curb where motor-vehicle crossed the stop bar. Most drivers preferred 4-6 feet away from the curb when they crossed the stop bar. This countermeasure for bicyclists' safety could attract about 40% of drivers to cross the boundary between the bicycle lane and the traffic lane and to enter the right-of-way of the bicycle lane. More than 50% of drivers needed 60-100 feet to finish the process of entering the right-of-way of the bicycle lane from the adjacent traffic lane. In short this newly-developed countermeasure for bicyclists' safety could greatly improve bicyclists' safety at intersections by changing drivers' right-turning movements. At last, some possible improvements for this new countermeasure were discussed to better this countermeasure in the future.

This report focuses on the application of several of these innovative bicycle infrastructure treatments in three different scenarios: shared-lane facilities, bicycle-specific facilities, and high-conflict area treatments. The focus treatments include the sharrow, Sharrow Bicycle Priority Lane, Green Bicycle Priority Lane, Bicycles May Use Full Lane sign, green bike lane, bike-box, green lane in a conflict area, and elephant's footprint markings. The goal of this report is to gather how well bicyclists understand their meaning, how they would use each, and which treatments are most preferred among bicyclists. : Data for this study was gathered in the form of an online survey administered to 1000 bicyclists of varying levels and purposes from different regions of the country. The survey gathers general rider characteristics, asks how each bicyclist would use each treatment in different traffic speed and volume scenarios, and finally each respondent rates each of the treatments in order of preference. Using the survey results, the effectiveness of each treatment is analyzed in detail by different population segments of those surveyed. Bicyclist riding characteristics and route choice factors are also examined in detail to better understand the sampled population of riders. The results are discussed and conclusions to the effectiveness of each treatment are made.

Book excerpt: This report addresses an important need for fundamental understanding of bicycle -automobile mixed-traffic. It presents models of (1) gap acceptance behavior and (2) bicyclist behavior at the onset of a yellow traffic signal indication, in addition to analysis of (3) coordinating traffic signals to provide progression for both bicycles and automobiles. Fundamental insights into mixed-traffic behavior are derived and applied to selected problems in mixed-traffic engineering and operations. Discrete choice (probit) models are developed for both motorist and cyclist gap acceptance behavior. An important fundamental insight from these models is that both cyclists and motorists require a longer gap when the gap is closed by a large vehicle (e.g. bus), and both will accept a shorter gap when the gap is closed by a bicycle, relative to a gap closed by a passenger car. A methodology for determining an adequate clearance interval for bicycles is developed from a deterministic model based on kinematic relations. The bicyclists behavior at the onset of a yellow signal indication are obtained. Finally, a conceptual foundation, consisting of three primary contributions, is developed for analyzing bicycle-automobile mixed-traffic progression along signalized streets.
