Download or read book Midrashic Women written by Judith R. Baskin and published by Brandeis University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most gender-based analyses of rabbinic Judaism concentrate on the status of women in the halakhah (the rabbinic legal tradition), Judith R. Baskin turns her attention to the construction of women in the aggadic midrash, a collection of expansions of the biblical text, rabbinic ruminations, and homiletical discourses that constitutes the non-legal component of rabbinic literature. Examining rabbinic convictions of female alterity, competing narratives of creation, and justifications of female disadvantages, as well as aggadic understandings of the ideal wife, the dilemma of infertility, and women among women and as individuals, she shows that rabbinic Judaism, a tradition formed by men for a male community, deeply valued the essential contributions of wives and mothers while also consciously constructing women as other and lesser than men. Recent feminist scholarship has illuminated many aspects of the significance of gender in biblical and halakhic texts but there has been little previous study of how aggadic literature portrays females and the feminine. Such representations, Baskin argues, often offer a more nuanced and complex view of women and their actual lives than the rigorous proscriptions of legal discourse.

Book Synopsis Women in the Biblical World by : Mayer I. Gruber
Download or read book Women in the Biblical World written by Mayer I. Gruber and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1995-11-14 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Women's history" has emerged as an independent discipline because women have been written out of the history of Western civilization as commonly taught and researched. Likewise, feminist interpretation of the Bible (often called feminist hermeneutics) grew out of the realization that conscious and unconscious sexism had often led scholars and students to ignore and even obscure the substantial role of women and womanhood in Hebrew Scripture. Women in the Biblical World provides scholars, clergy, seminarians, college students, and others with access to books and articles—both technical and semi-popular—that shed light on the role of women in Hebrew Scripture. The guide demonstrates that the study of women and womanhood in the biblical world has assumed special importance during the two great periods of struggle for women's rights—the 1890s and the last quarter of the 20th century. However, this guide also demonstrates that the public role of women and womanhood in the ancient Near East was so great that scholarship has never been able to ignore it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an indispensable resource about the role of Jewish women from post-biblical times to the twentieth century. Unique in its approach, it is structured so that each chapter, which is divided into three parts, covers a specific period and geographical area. The first section of the book contains an overview, explaining how historical events affected Jews in general and Jewish women in particular. This is followed by a section of biographical entries of women of the period whose lives are set in their economic, familial, and cultural backgrounds. The third and last part of each chapter, "The World of Jewish Women," is organized by topic and covers women's activities and interests and how Jewish laws concerning women developed and changed. This comprehensive work is an easy-to-use sourcebook, synopsizing rich and diverse resources. By examining history and analyzing the dynamics of Jewish law and custom, it illuminates the circumstances of Jewish women's lives and traces the changes that have occurred throughout the centuries. It casts a new and clear light on Jewish women as individuals and sets women firmly within the context of their own cultural and historical periods. The book contains illustrations, boxed text, extensive endnotes, and indices that list each woman by name. It is ideal for women's groups and study groups as well as students and scholars.

Download or read book Introduction to the Talmud and Midrash written by Hermann Leberecht Strack and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gunter Stemberger's revision of H. L. Strack's classic introduction to rabbinic literature, which appeared in its first English edition in 1991, was widely acclaimed. Gunter Stemberger and Markus Bockmuehl have now produced this updated edition, which is a significant revision (completed in 1996) of the 1991 volume. Following Strack's original outline, Stemberger discusses first the historical framework, the basic principles of rabbinic literature and hermeneutics and the most important Rabbis. The main part of the book is devoted to the Talmudic and Midrashic literature in the light of contemporary rabbinic research. The appendix includes a new section on electronic resources for the study of the Talmud and Midrash. The result is a comprehensive work of reference that no student of rabbinics can afford to be without.
