Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliography of the Geology and Eruptive Phenomena of the More Important Volcanoes of Southern Italy By the time that the Geologists' Association paid its visit to Southern Italy in the months of September and October, 1889, the bibliography had grown to almost twice the size, and Lavis happily seized upon the occasion to publish it in 1891 as an appendix to the account of the excursion, which was reprinted from the Proceedings of the Association. The whole thus formed a valuable manual of information on the Volcanoes of Southern Italy. From that time onwards no opportunity was lost for working at this bibliography and endeavouring to render it as complete as such a work can ever be. When the war broke out, depriving him at once of his practice, he had determined to employ his enforced leisure from professional duties till happier times should return in systematically revising and augmenting the whole bibliography and in ransacking every available source with this object in view. His tragic death cut this project short, and all the loving labour of years of patient research seemed likely to be thrown away had not his family most felicitously conceived the idea of completing the work so far as might be possible and publishing it as a worthy offering to his memory. This book was released on 2017-07-24 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volcanic eruptions are common, with more than 50 volcanic eruptions in the United States alone in the past 31 years. These eruptions can have devastating economic and social consequences, even at great distances from the volcano. Fortunately many eruptions are preceded by unrest that can be detected using ground, airborne, and spaceborne instruments. Data from these instruments, combined with basic understanding of how volcanoes work, form the basis for forecasting eruptionsâ€"where, when, how big, how long, and the consequences. Accurate forecasts of the likelihood and magnitude of an eruption in a specified timeframe are rooted in a scientific understanding of the processes that govern the storage, ascent, and eruption of magma. Yet our understanding of volcanic systems is incomplete and biased by the limited number of volcanoes and eruption styles observed with advanced instrumentation. Volcanic Eruptions and Their Repose, Unrest, Precursors, and Timing identifies key science questions, research and observation priorities, and approaches for building a volcano science community capable of tackling them. This report presents goals for making major advances in volcano science.

Book excerpt: VOLCANOES Since the publication of the first edition of Volcanoes in 2010, our world of volcanology has changed in exciting ways. Volcanoes have continued to erupt (some 61 eruptions with VEI magnitudes greater than 3 have taken place since 2010), and in this revised and updated edition, the authors describe the largest of these, and the ones that have had the most impact on society. Volcanoes, Second Edition, contains more than 80 new photographs and figures to better illustrate volcanic features and processes, with an updated Bibliography that includes important papers describing recent eruptions and new findings. Volcanologic research is improving the foundations of knowledge upon which all our science rests, and we briefly summarize the most important of these advances and new research tools developed over the past eleven years. The most productive of these new tools are remotely operated, constantly monitoring volcanoes and their impacts on the Earth’s atmosphere from space and exploring new volcanic worlds beyond the bounds of Earth. Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) are now widely available to understand better the most active volcanoes on Earth - those beneath the sea. This superlative textbook will enable students who may never see an erupting volcano to evaluate news stories about far-away eruptions, and to distinguish between overly sensational stories and factual reporting that puts facts in context. Emergency managers, land use planners, and civic officials also need to understand volcanic processes when their communities are threatened – this book will inform and guide them in their decision-making. Avoiding overly technical discussions and unnecessary use of jargon, with the important needs of civil authorities, teachers and students particularly in mind, this second edition of Volcanoes will also be of interest to general readers who are interested in these fascinating and ever-changing features of our dynamic planet.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Volcanoes: Their Structure and Significance Where it not that Nature sometimes supplies new material, there would be little excuse for another book on Volcanoes. The treatises of Daubeny and Scrope (to speak only of those in English) are not yet superannuated; the concise volume contributed by Professor Judd to the International Scientific Series is only seventeen years old; and while these chapters were being written Sir A. Geikie's work on British Volcanoes, and Professor I. C. Russell's on those of North America, made their appearance. The last two, however, are more or less restricted to special topics, and some eruptions of exceptional importance have occurred during the last twenty years, so that I have ventured to increase the literature on this interesting and, in some respects, very difficult subject. In writing this book, I have endeavoured to lead the reader through descriptions of the varied phenomena of volcanic action, in the present and in the past, towards ascertaining by inference the cause or causes of eruptions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vesuvius, Campi Flegrei, and Campanian Volcanism communicates the state-of-the-art scientific knowledge on past and active volcanism in an area characterized by elevated risk due to high-density population. Eruptions, lahars and poisonous gas clouds have killed many thousands of people over recorded history, but volcanoes have given people some of the most fertile soil known in agriculture. The research presented in this book is useful for policymakers and researchers from these and other countries who are looking for risk assessment and volcanic evolution models they can apply to similar situations around the world. Naples and its surrounding area, in particular, the area situated between Vesuvius and the Campi Flegrei volcanic area has a population in excess of 4 million people. The volcanic areas that have similarly large populations in proximity to dormant, but hazardous volcanoes, i.e., Indonesia and Central America can also benefit from this work. Covers the fundamental science of volcanoes, including new developments in the last decade relating to the use of crystals and melt inclusions to model the nature and evolution of volatiles Includes the latest research on volcanism in Southern Italy that is presented as a case study for active and inactive volcanoes across the globe Presents research that is applicable around the world, for people, scientists and policymakers living on, or near, active volcanoes

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive description of the volcanological, petrological and geochemical features of the Copahue volcano, located at the border between Argentina and Chile. Scientific studies are limited for this volcanic system, due to its remote location and difficult access in winter. However, Copahue is one of the most active volcanic systems in the southern Andes. Monitoring the volcano's activity is of utter importance, as it provides means of existence for the nearby village of the same name, hosting the world's highest-located hot-springs resort. This book's aim is to present the current monitoring activities, and to describe future research programs that are planned in order to mitigate volcanic hazards. Special attention is therefore devoted to the social and industrial activities close to the volcano, such as health therapies and geothermal energy exploitation. In a special section, the Copahue volcano is presented as a terrestrial modern analog for early-Earth and Mars environments.
