Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretically translated from the 1991 Dicctionario Illustrado de Micologia, a reference for students of fungus, but in fact also updated and enlarged to include nearly twice as many terms and 80% more illustrations. Many of the some 4,000 entries include black-and- white drawings or photographs illustrating the part or feature being defined. Ulloa (botany, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico) and Hanlin (plant pathology, U. of Georgia) include the derivation of the words, most of which are from Latin. Unfortunately they do not indicate pronunciation. The cross-referencing is extensive, which mitigates the lack of an index. They also include a short bibliography and an extensive outline of the classification of the taxa they cover down to the genus level. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Commemorating the centenary of the British Mycological Society, founded in 1896, this book gives an account of the British contribution to mycology, both at professional and amateur level. A variety of distinguished British and American authors give an authoritative commentary on the state of mycology, and on potential future developments in fields in which British mycologists made important breakthroughs. The book is introduced by an overview of the British contribution and personal views on pioneering work on aquatic hyphomycetes, tropical mycology and the amateur contribution. Later review articles treat a number of subjects in depth such as physiology, systematics, ecology, chemistry and mapping. This unique book will be of great interest to all professional and amateur mycologists in both research and teaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To retain their usefulness, cultures that manufacture economically valuable products must be uncontaminated, viable, and genetically stable. Maintaining Cultures for Biotechnology and Industry gives practical advice necessary to preserve and maintain cells and microorganisms important to the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries in ways that ensure they will continue to be able to synthesize those valuable metabolites. This book covers not just those strains currently being used but also those yet to be discovered and engineered. This text is essential for anyone working with cultures who wants to avoid the frustration of losing strains and needs to be able to devise and evaluate new strategies for preservation. - Written by hands-on experts in their respective fields - Contains helpful tables and protocols for preserving or maintaining cells, cultures and viruses - Discusses means to preserve cells by freezing, lyophilization, drying, cyoprotection, spore storage, continuous propagation and subculturing when absolutely necessary, and others - Gives information needed to test cultures for stable retention of important characteristics - Gives principles needed to devise and evaluate preservation strategies for newly identified and newly engineered cells and organisms - Lists culture sources for each class of organism - Includes information for characterizing and monitoring recombinant organisms, especially important because of their propensity for genetic stability - Discusses the history of the continually evolving field of culture preservation - Examines the importance of genetically stable cultures as it relates to maintaining patent positions
