People have been dreaming about space travel for centuries - there's something amazing about the idea of leaving our planet behind and setting out to explore the Universe - there's so much we still don't know. UK and Ireland's best-loved comedian Dara ” Briain takes you on a journey from the safety of your comfiest chair to the furthest reaches of space (and beyond!)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has several purposes. First, I intend to illustrate that Christianity can be a good foundation for a career in music. Second, I would like to mention and thank as many people as possible who have made positive contributions to my career. Third, I would like to provide a collection of stories (perhaps proverbs or parables) that could be useful to teachers. Fourth, I recognize now that my lifetime has seen historical revolution in the arts, finance, sex, marriage, military, politics, transportation, entertainment: practically every value we took for granted when I was a child has either been discarded or modified to the point where it is hardly recognizable. However, humanity still exists and with all its faults it is lovable and worth preserving. Oh, yes, I would also like this book to be enjoyable reading! Vernal E. Richardson

Book excerpt: As more and more people inhabit the Earth and live longer on it, Super Cities, will explode with populations of 20, 30, even 100 millions or more. But how will these cities accommodate such masses? Who will build them and where? How can they be sustained and their inhabitants provided for? Here, Jeff Dondero imagines the super cities of the future and explores the ways in which they can be sustainably built, how transportation will move masses of people without cars, how people will be fed and where waste will go, and how we will move to cities underground, under the sea, in the atmosphere, into space and on to other planets. It describes some of the smart systems for buildings and homes and some of the new ways food and materials enough for such masses will be supplied. Will super cities be the answer to our bursting population? And if they will, how can we best sustain and supply them? Dondero offers suggestions and a blueprint for the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-time Academy Award winner Sir David Lean (1908–1991) was one of the most prominent directors of the twentieth century, responsible for the classics The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and Doctor Zhivago (1965). British-born Lean asserted himself in Hollywood as a major filmmaker with his epic storytelling and panoramic visions of history, but he started out as a talented film editor and director in Great Britain. As a result, he brought an art-house mentality to blockbuster films. Combining elements of biography and film criticism, Beyond the Epic: The Life and Films of David Lean uses screenplays and production histories to assess Lean’s body of work. Author Gene D. Phillips interviews actors who worked with Lean and directors who knew him, and their comments reveal new details about the director’s life and career. Phillips also explores Lean’s lesser-studied films, such as The Passionate Friends (1949), Hobson’s Choice (1954), and Summertime (1955). The result is an in-depth examination of the director in cultural, historical, and cinematic contexts. Lean’s approach to filmmaking was far different than that of many of his contemporaries. He chose his films carefully and, as a result, directed only sixteen films in a period of more than forty years. Those films, however, have become some of the landmarks of motion-picture history. Lean is best known for his epics, but Phillips also focuses on Lean’s successful adaptations of famous works of literature, including retellings of plays such as Brief Encounter (1945) and novels such as Great Expectations (1946), Oliver Twist (1948), and A Passage to India (1984). From expansive studies of war and strife to some of literature’s greatest high comedies and domestic dramas, Lean imbued all of his films with his unique creative vision. Few directors can match Lean’s ability to combine narrative sweep and psychological detail, and Phillips goes beyond Lean’s epics to reveal this unifying characteristic in the director’s body of work. Beyond the Epic is a vital assessment of a great director’s artistic process and his place in the film industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a journey begun twenty years earlier, Daryl Farmer, a twenty-year-old two-time college dropout, did what lost men have so often done in this country: he headed west. Twenty years later and seventy pounds heavier, with the yellowing journals from that transformative five-thousand-mile bicycle trek in his pack, Farmer set out to retrace his path. This is his story of pursuing that distant summer and that distant dream of home, where home is endless space, a roof of big sky, and a bed of dry earth. ø Just as the years altered the man, so, too, have they altered the West, and Farmer?s second journey affords a unique perspective on these changes?as well as on what lasts. Whether caught in a Colorado snowstorm or braving a Yellowstone herd of bison, kayaking with orcas in Puget Sound, trading Ninja moves with a homeless man in San Francisco, or getting the lowdown on aliens on Nevada?s Extraterrestrial Highway, Farmer charts a moving landscape of people and places. This is the West where the natural world and personal character are inextricably linked, and where one man?s ride into the past and present takes us to the heart of that ever-evolving connection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the origin of life a lucky roll of cosmic dice? Who is behind the origin of the universe? What do the latest scientific discoveries say about the origin of space and time? Beyond the Boundaries of Science explores the cosmic puzzles that accompany our greatest scientific advances. It suggests that there is more, beyond the reach of science--a super-intelligent Designer behind these mysteries. It takes both science and the Bible seriously, comparing the latest scientific theories with the account in Genesis, interpreted as a revelation of the sequence of our origins.
