Book excerpt: At a time when the world, Europe especially, is once more threatened by murderous conflicts between groups of people claiming ethnic and national identity as a basis for sovereignty over specific territories, it is timely to consider the part that literature has played and is playing in the creation of ethnic and national stereotypes. What role do such stereotypes have in literature? How are they created? From what materials are they constructed? What purpose do ethnic and national stereotypes serve? Can it ever be a useful one? Are they avoidable? Can we live without them? What can be done about the deleterious effects they may be thought to produce? Stereotyping is worldwide — is there a tribe, race and nation in existence which escapes being stereotyped by its neighbours? In what sense are these stereotypes accurate? How are these stereotypes reflected in and reinforced by literature? Should and can literature do anything about them? In Beyond Pug's Tour: National and Ethnic Stereotyping in Theory and Literary Practice, literary scholars, as well as academics engaged in sociological and psychological research, consider these and other questions by examining the work of specific authors and the circumstances in which stereotyping plays such a crucial part.

Book excerpt: The study is an imagological analysis of Dutch immigrants in the United States, giving insights into stereotyping, identity formation, and the marketing of ethnicity. Tracing Dutch-American literary images through four centuries of writing in America, the study emphasizes the continuity of Dutch-American history. The assessment of images in their socio-cultural context reveals the disparity between literary and socio-cultural perception, the latter of which often evokes Dutch ethnicity in the United States as a mere means to an end. While the study ascertains which images of Dutch Americans have dominated public perception, it also investigates the origins of such images, their persistence irrespective of time and location, and the reasons for their fluctuating interpretations.

Book excerpt: Following her "A New Modernity?," which looked at ways in which we could rethink Enlightenment values to include more of the world of the emotions and the body, in this volume Wendy Wheeler gathers together essays which explore the complex nature of the contemporary 'self', which - as she argues - is the starting point for politics. Wheeler's contributors show that looking creatively and imaginatively across the different disciplines, art, literature, science, psychology - we can see the emergence of new ideas about the nature of politics, and of the human beings which are the subject of politics. In particular we can see the poverty of much contemporary political discourse, which tends to lose sight of human beings in its focus on managerialism, efficiency and a rather narrowly defined realism. By rethinking fundamental questions about the nature of political subjects, we can begin to develop a new and more humane politics. The book has a historical section which looks at ways in which ideas about the self have been both shaped by past political cultures and reflected in them. The contemporary section includes essays on psychoanalysis, crowd psychology, modernisation, colonialism, political poetry, complexity theory, emotional literacy, ethics, masculinity and computer prosthetics. Wheeler's trawling of the disciplines in her quest for a new politics has resulted in an original and illuminating series of reflections on new ways of 'doing politics.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization, devolution and the challenges of a postcolonial and multicultural society have fuelled the debate about national identity in Britain in recent years. Notions of individual and collective identity have revolved around a number of stereotypes of ̀Britishness' or ̀Englishness' which appear ever more incongruous. This study suggests that these debates still draw on discourses of Englishness which were shaped in the interwar period and amplified in Second World War propaganda. From the 1920s to the 1940s, Englishness as a form of collective and cultural identity can be described as a ̀symbolic form', comprising specific notions of the people and their relationship to the country, most powerfully visualized in landscapes embodying a ̀mythical present'.
