Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Going beyond the Pairs, Dennis McCort examines the theme of the coincidentia oppositorum—the tendency of a thing or relationship to turn, under certain conditions, into its own opposite—as it is expressed in German Romanticism, Zen Buddhism, and deconstruction. McCort argues that the coincidentia can be useful for understanding and comparing a variety of cultural forms, including systems of myth, religions ancient and modern, laws of social organization, speculative philosophies East and West, psychological theories and therapeutic practices, and dynamic organizing principles of music, art, and literature. The book touches on a variety of Western and Eastern writers and thinkers, including Thomas Merton, Jacques Derrida, Nishida Kitaro, Rainer Maria Rilke, Franklin Merrell-Wolff, Franz Kafka, Novalis, Renzai Zen, J. D. Salinger, and the mysterious, doughnut-loving editor of the medieval Chinese koan collection, Mumonkan.

Book Synopsis Science and Beyond by : Rolf Sattler
Download or read book Science and Beyond written by Rolf Sattler and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, coupled with technology, has become the dominant force in most parts of the world. Thus, it affects our lives and society in many ways. Yet, misconceptions about science are widespread in governments, the general public, and even among many scientists. Science and Beyond explores these misconceptions that may have grave and even disastrous consequences for individuals and society as was evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, where they led to much unnecessary suffering, sickness, and death. The misconceptions also obscure the limitations of science. Not seeing these limitations prevents us from seeing and going beyond them, which leads to a crippled life and an impoverished society. But reaching beyond the limitations of science, as outlined in this book, can open the doors to a more fulfilled, saner, healthier, happier, and more peaceful life and society.

This is done through the power of four words: WHO AM I NOW? Self Enquiry is an ancient practice for attaining Self realization. However, with the passage of time its finer nuances have gone missing and it has become one of the most misunderstood of practices. Presented in a profound yet simple Q/A format, this book presents Self Enquiry – with Understanding. Understanding is the crucial element that helps you to recognize the missing links and gain the knowledge of Self, which in turn facilitates in reaching your true self, easily and definitively. “Who am I?” is the question asked in Self Enquiry that will lead you to the experience of the Self. And “Who am I Now?” is a unique method that will help you stay in that experience, in and through your daily affairs. Download or read book Beyond Fate written by Margaret Visser and published by House of Anansi. This book was released on 2002 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people today are afflicted with a sense that they cannot change things for the better. They feel helpless, constrained, caught ? in a word, fatalistic. Beyond Fate examines why. In her characteristically lively prose, Margaret Visser investigates what fate means to us, and where the propensity to believe in it and accept it comes from. She takes an ancient metaphor where time is "seen" and spoken of as though it were space and examines how this way of picturing reality can be a useful tool to think with - or, on the other hand, how it may lead people into disastrous misunderstandings. By observing how fatalism expresses itself in one's daily life, in everything from table manners to shopping to sport, the book proposes ways to limit its influence. Beyond Fate provides a timely and provocative perspective on modern life, both personal and social.
Book Synopsis Beyond Ethics to Post-Ethics by : Peter Baofu
Download or read book Beyond Ethics to Post-Ethics written by Peter Baofu and published by IAP. This book was released on 2011-02-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is moral goodness really so desirable in the way that its proponents through the ages would like us to believe? For instance, in our time, there is even this latest version of the popular moral idea shared by many, when Dalai Lama suggested that “[w]e need these human values [of compassion and affection]….Even without religion,…we have the capacity to promote these things.” (WK 2009) The naivety of this popular moral idea can be contrasted with an opposing (critical) idea advocated not long ago by Sigmund Freud (1966), who once wrote that “men are not gentle creatures who want to be loved, and who at the most can defend themselves if they are attacked; they are, on the contrary, creatures among whose instinctual endowments is to be reckoned a powerful share of aggressiveness. As a result, their neighbor is for them…someone who tempts them to satisfy their aggressiveness on him, to exploit his capacity for work without compensation, to use him sexually without his consent, to seize his possessions, to humiliate him, to cause him pain, to torture and to kill him. Homo homini lupus.” Contrary to the two opposing sides of this battle for the high moral ground, morality and immorality are neither possible nor desirable to the extent that their respective ideologues would like us to believe. But one should not misunderstand this challenge as a suggestion that ethics is a worthless field of study, or that other fields of study (related to ethics) like political philosophy, moral psychology, social studies, theology, or even international relations should be dismissed. Needless to stress, neither of these two extreme views is reasonable either. Instead, this book provides an alternative (better) way to understand the nature of ethics, especially in relation to morality and immorality—while learning from different approaches in the literature but without favoring any one of them (nor integrating them, since they are not necessarily compatible with each other). This book offers a new theory to transcend the existing approaches in the literature on ethics in a way not thought of before. This seminal project is to fundamentally alter the way that we think about ethics, from the combined perspectives of the mind, nature, society, and culture, with enormous implications for the human future and what I originally called its “post-human” fate.
Download or read book Sophia written by Christopher Pramuk and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While numerous studies have celebrated Thomas Merton's witness as an interfaith pioneer, poet, and peacemaker, there have been few systematic treatments of his Christology as such, and no sustained exploration to date of his relationship to the Russian Sophia" tradition. This book looks to Thomas Merton as a "classic" theologian of the Christian tradition from East to West, and offers an interpretation of his mature Christology, with special attention to his remarkable prose poem of 1962, Hagia Sophia. Bringing Merton's mystical-prophetic Vision fully into dialogue with contemporary Christology, Russian sophiology, and Zen, as well as figures such as John Henry Newman and Abraham Joshua Heschel, the author carefully but boldly builds the case that Sophia, the same theological eros that animated Merton's religious imagination in a period of tremendous fragmentation and violence, might infuse new vitality into our own. A study of uncommon depth and scope, inspired throughout by Merton's extraordinary catholicity. Christopher Pramuk, PhD, is assistant professor of theology at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the author of two books and numerous essays, and the recipient of the Catholic Theological Society of America's 2009 Catherine Mowry LaCugna Award. "

Book Synopsis Negative Theology by : Johannes Aakjær Steenbuch
Download or read book Negative Theology written by Johannes Aakjær Steenbuch and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-09-23 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we speak about God if God is ineffable? This paradoxical question lies at the heart of one of the strangest traditions of philosophical and theological thought: negative theology. As a tradition of thought, negative (or apophatic) theology can be traced back to the convergence of Greek philosophy with Jewish and Christian theology in the first century CE. Beginning with a seemingly simple claim about the ineffability or unsayability of God, negative theology evolved into a complex tradition of thought and spirituality. Today, together with a growing interest in patristic and medieval studies, negative theology enjoys renewed attention in contemporary philosophy and theology. This short introduction presents an overview of how the tradition developed from antiquity until present.

Book Synopsis The Neutral One by : Glen Carl Cutlip
Download or read book The Neutral One written by Glen Carl Cutlip and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-01-11 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt:
The Neutral One is what we are at the core of being, the reconciliation of the seeming opposites of being. The Neutral One represents the Christ Self, the Sun of Righteousness, the Day star.
Although we cannot say what the Neutral One is, we Can. We can by saying and not saying what it is at the same time.
To describe the indescribable, we must do so without doing so. The Neutral One is what it is and what it is not too in reconciliation.
The Neutral One is that which is with us always, from everlasting to everlasting, without beginning or end. It is the beginning and the end of all things without being either, for it is ever before and after itself as two parts of the same thing.
The Neutral One is the living Christ that reconciles all things of heaven and earth unto one and delivers that unto God that God may be realized to be, indeed, the all in all dwelling in all.

Book Synopsis The Whole Elephant Revealed by : Marja de Vries
Download or read book The Whole Elephant Revealed written by Marja de Vries and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05-25 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Whole Elephant Revealed offers clear insights into the existence and operation of universal laws and the golden ratio. It is a synthesis based on common insights found in all wisdom traditions into the operation of universal laws on the one hand and on cutting-edge scientific discoveries that are in line with those insights on the other hand. These principles are called universal because they work on all levels of existence, apply to everything that exist and create order and harmony in the universe. Insights into the operation of the universal laws reveals a whole new worldview. It helps us to understand how everything works in the universe, who we really are and how we can make conscious choices that are more in line with these universal laws. Above all it helps us to understand what works and what doesn’t work in the long term. Everything that operates in line with the universal laws, follows the path of least resistance and is in harmony with the greater whole. It makes us realize that while everything in the universe works in harmony with these principles, many aspects of our personal life and our Western culture are not in line with the operation of these underlying principles. If we choose to act in line with the operation of the universal laws, it will go easier, will be more in tune with who we really are and more in harmony with the greater whole. This choice is hard to make though, if we don’t know those principles. For that reason the rediscovery of the working of these principles seems to be of extreme importance. In this time of great changes and global unbalance a growing number of people begin to feel the need for a clear and well-founded insight into the universal laws, because this gives an understanding of what is needed to restore the balance and harmony in ourselves as well as worldwide. Because the nature of these principles is universal, they apply to all aspects of our individual and social life. Therefore they can be used as a frame of reference for all personal and social transformations which aim at a greater harmony within ourselves and with the greater whole. ,
