Book Synopsis Beyond Loving by : Amy C. Steinbugler
Download or read book Beyond Loving written by Amy C. Steinbugler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Loving provides a critical examination of interracial intimacy in the beginning decades of the twenty-first century-an era rife with racial contradictions, where interracial relationships are increasingly seen as symbols of racial progress even as old stereotypes about illicit eroticism persist. Drawing on extensive qualitative research, Amy Steinbugler examines the racial dynamics of everyday life for lesbian, gay, and heterosexual Black/White couples. She disputes the notion that interracial partners are enlightened subjects who have somehow managed to "get beyond" race. Instead, for many partners, interracial intimacy represents not the end, but the beginning of a sustained process of negotiating racial differences. Her research reveals the ordinary challenges that partners frequently face and the myriad ways that race shapes their interactions with each other as well as with neighbors, family members, co-workers and strangers. Steinbugler analyzes the everyday actions and strategies through which individuals maintain close relationships in a society with deeply-rooted racial inequalities-what she calls "racework." Beyond Loving reveals interracial intimacy as an ongoing process rather than a singular accomplishment. This analytic shift helps us reach a new understanding of how race "works"-not just in intimate spheres, but across all facets of contemporary social life.

No one is more perfectly suited to give them what they need than you are. What's Beyond Loving is about helping parents recognize opportunities for growth and development throughout life, in both ourselves and our children. It's about learning to identify what we want for our children and from the parenting experience itself. It is my hope that those who read What's Beyond Loving will recognize the ethereal connection between parent and child and learn to appreciate and utilize this great gift for the benefit of our children as well as ourselves.

Download or read book Beyond Love written by Hadiya Hussein and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hussein’s starkly beautiful novel Beyond Love plunges us into the 1991 Gulf War and its aftermath. Huda, the young woman at the center of the story, experiences the deprivation and humiliation of life in sanctioned Iraq, working in the satirically named al-Amal factory (factory of hope) making men’s underwear. While surveillance and fear permeate daily life, Huda dares to vote “no” in the referendum for Saddam Hussein. This courageous act could have led to her death had she not fled to the closest border, Jordan, where the novel begins. Huda is not alone: Iraqi exiles are legion there, all waiting to be relocated and start new lives. Unable to go home or to feel settled in a foreign city, she struggles to overcome her grief and haunting memories of the war and the Shi’ite uprising. In letters, diaries, and oral stories, Hussein’s characters viscerally portray the pain of war and the alienation of exile. Originally published in Arabic in 2003, Beyond Love introduces English-language readers to one of the leading voices in Iraqi fiction today.

Book excerpt: The first time Wyatt Hutton's pale blue eyes meet mine, they steal my breath-even if I only see them for a second before he refuses to look at me again. He's older than me, by way too much, and if he had his way, our paths never would have crossed in the first place. But our fate was written in the stars and while the truth of our families should keep us apart, life keeps bringing us together again. Over and over, he's the only one I turn to when things fall to pieces. And when he's in need, my embrace is the only cure. We fight our feelings. We fight our families. We fight fate. Maybe it's time we fight for each other instead... "...a modern day star-crossed lover story." (...with a happily ever after, of course!) This emotional age-gap/forbidden contemporary romance has all the joy and angst you can expect from Abby Brooks. BEYOND LOVE can be read as a standalone, but to get the most out of the experience, read the Hutton Family series in order.
