Book Synopsis Making a Green Machine by : Finn Arne Jørgensen
Download or read book Making a Green Machine written by Finn Arne Jørgensen and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making a Green Machine examines the development of the Scandinavian beverage container deposit-refund system, which has the highest return rates in the world, from 1970 to present. Finn Arne Jorgensen's comparative framework charts the complex network of business and political actors involved in the development of the reverse vending machine (RVM) and bottle deposit legislation to better understand the different historical trajectories empty beverage containers have taken across markets, including the U.S. The RVM began simply as a tool for grocers who had to handle empty refillable glass bottles, but has become a green machine to redeem the empty beverage container, helping both business and consumers participate in environmental actions.

Book Synopsis Why Do We Recycle? by : Frank Ackerman
Download or read book Why Do We Recycle? written by Frank Ackerman and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The earnest warnings of an impending "solid waste crisis" that permeated the 1980s provided the impetus for the widespread adoption of municipal recycling programs. Since that time America has witnessed a remarkable rise in public participation in recycling activities, including curbside collection, drop-off centers, and commercial and office programs. Recently, however, a backlash against these programs has developed. A vocal group of "anti-recyclers" has appeared, arguing that recycling is not an economically efficient strategy for addressing waste management problems. In Why Do We Recycle? Frank Ackerman examines the arguments for and against recycling, focusing on the debate surrounding the use of economic mechanisms to determine the value of recycling. Based on previously unpublished research conducted by the Tellus Institute, a nonprofit environmental research group in Boston, Massachusetts, Ackerman presents an alternative view of the theory of market incentives, challenging the notion that setting appropriate prices and allowing unfettered competition will result in the most efficient level of recycling. Among the topics he considers are: externality issues -- unit pricing for waste disposal, effluent taxes, virgin materials subsidies, advance disposal fees the landfill crisis and disposal facility siting container deposit ("bottle bill") legislation environmental issues that fall outside of market theory calculating costs and benefits of municipal recycling programs life-cycle analysis and packaging policy -- Germany's "Green Dot" packaging system and producer responsibility the impacts of production in extractive and manufacturing industries composting and organic waste management economics of conservation, and material use and long-term sustainability Ackerman explains why purely economic approaches to recycling are incomplete and argues for a different kind of decisionmaking, one that addresses social issues, future as well as present resource needs, and non-economic values that cannot be translated into dollars and cents. Backed by empirical data and replete with specific examples, the book offers valuable guidance for municipal planners, environmental managers, and policymakers responsible for establishing and implementing recycling programs. It is also an accessible introduction to the subject for faculty, students, and concerned citizens interested in the social, economic, and ethical underpinnings of recycling efforts.

Download or read book Resource and Environmental Profile Analysis of Nine Beverage Container Alternatives written by Robert G. Hunt and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study is a resource and environmental profile analysis (REPA) of nine beverage container options. The analysis encompassed seven different parameters: virgin raw materials use, energy use, water use, industrial sold wastes, post-consumer solid wastes, air pollutant emissions and water pollutant effluents. These parameters were assessed for each manufacturing and transportation step in the life cycle of a container, beginning with extraction of the raw materials from the earth, continuing through the materials processing steps, product fabrication, use and final disposal. The nine container systems encompass four basic raw materials: glass, steel, aluminum and plastic. A fifth basic material is also included in packaging of the containers; this material is paper.--P. 1.

Book Synopsis The Economics of Environmental Regulation by : Wallace E. Oates
Download or read book The Economics of Environmental Regulation written by Wallace E. Oates and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1996-03 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Economics of Environmental Regulation is an excellent book . . . provides the reader with copies of some of the most important papers in the field. Wallace Oates writes well and there is great scope to his interests (his flexibility as an economist is witnessed by the fact that an earlier volume in the Great Economists series collects his pioneering contributions in the field of local government finance). Everything he writes is underpinned by firm theoretical rigour.' - Anthony Heyes, The Journal of Energy Literature Environmental regulation and policy making are increasingly influenced by economic considerations. Over the past 30 years, Wallace E. Oates has been closely involved in the development of environmental economics as a distinct and vital field for theoretical study, applied research and policy prescription. Drawing key papers together in a systematic fashion, Professor Oates's collection begins with thoughtful overviews of the field and then continues with discussion of specific issues. Among the topics addressed are instruments for environmental regulation, the use of fees and taxes, emission permits, environmental federalism and global environmental management.
