Book Synopsis Soil and Water Quality at Different Scales by : Peter A. Finke
Download or read book Soil and Water Quality at Different Scales written by Peter A. Finke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated studies on the assessment and improvement of soil and water quality have to deal almost inevitably with issues of scale, since the spatial support of measurements, the model calculations and the presentation of results usually vary. This book contains the selected and edited proceedings of a workshop devoted to issues of scale entitled: `Soil and Water Quality at Different Scales', which was held in 1996 in Wageningen. It is intended for environmental researchers, scientists and MSc and PhD students. Part 1 covers current issues and methodologies with scale related soil and water quality research. Part 2 covers agroecological and hydrological case studies in which scale transforms form an important part of the research chain. Part 3 consists of papers focusing on methodologies and up and downscaling. Part 4 contains review papers based on modellers' and statisticians' considerations as well as the papers and posters presented during the workshop. Part 5 consists of short research notes.

Book excerpt: While creativity plays an important role in the advancement of computer science, great ideas are built on a foundation of practical experience and knowledge. This book presents programming techniques which will be useful in both AI projects and more conventional software engineering endeavors. My primary goal is to enter tain, to introduce new technologies and to provide reusable software modules for the computer programmer who enjoys using programs as models for solutions to hard and interesting problems. If this book succeeds in entertaining, then it will certainly also educate. I selected the example application areas covered here for their difficulty and have provided both program examples for specific applications and (I hope) the method ology and spirit required to master problems for which there is no obvious solution. I developed the example programs on a Macintosh TM using the Macintosh Common LISP TM development system capturing screen images while the example programs were executing. To ensure portability to all Common LISP environments, I have provided a portable graphics library in Chapter 2. All programs in this book are copyrighted by Mark Watson. They can be freely used in any free or commercial software systems if the following notice appears in the fine print of the program's documentation: "This program contains software written by Mark Watson." No royalties are required. The program miniatures contained in this book may not be distributed by posting in source code form on public information networks, or in printed form without my written permission.

Book Synopsis Field-Scale Water and Solute Flux in Soils by : Roth
Download or read book Field-Scale Water and Solute Flux in Soils written by Roth and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the first workshop held at Monte Verità near Ascona, Switzerland on September 24-29, 1989. The workshop was designed to survey the current understanding of water and solute transport through unsaturated soils under field conditions, and to foster research by discussing some unresolved key issues relative to transport modeling and experimentation in four "Think Tank" groups. The first part of this book consists of the reports prepared by the Think Tank groups, who discussed the following topics: modeling approaches, effective large scale properties, evaluation of filed properties, and the role preferential flow. The second part contains a selection of reviewed original contributions presented at the workshop, with topics ranging from the presentation of results from large scale experiments, to improved or new modeling approaches, and to legal or policy aspects. This book is intended for researchers in soil science, hydrology, and environmental engineering who have an interest in transport and reaction processes in the unsaturated zone. It will provide them with a representative sample of current research activities, and with a group discussion of future research directions in four important areas of water and solute transport.

This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Waterbackpack PAUL -Portable Aqua Unit for Life Saving- is a water treatment unit based on the Ultra-Low Pressure Ultrafiltration (ULP-UF) technology and is since 2010 successfully applied as a fast response to get safe water during natural disasters or emergencies in more than 2 000 cases worldwide. In addition, PAUL has demonstrated that the ULP-UF technology can be used in permanent decentralised drinking-water supply for remote and rural areas, as it is easy to handle and does require neither chemicals nor energy consumption nor spare parts on a regular basis. Hence, the ULP-UF is an appropriate solution in the process of reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensure by 2030 access to safe drinking water worldwide. However, during long-term uses and under certain water characteristics, the ULP-UF faces some operational and maintenance challenges. The biofouling adhered to the membrane surface may lead to severe flux reduction. In addition, some re-growth of bacteria may take place on the permeate side because of the presence of high content of natural organic matter (NOM) in the raw water, especially Biopolymer and Humic Acids. Therefore, the aim of this study was to integrate some appropriate treatment steps before the ULP-UF technology, so that a reduction of attachment of NOM and biofilm to the membrane could be achieved and thus an increase of permeate flux and a reduction of potential regrowth of bacteria on permeate water could be accomplished.

Book Synopsis The Inter-Relationship Between Irrigation, Drainage and the Environment in the Aral Sea Basin by : M.G. Bos
Download or read book The Inter-Relationship Between Irrigation, Drainage and the Environment in the Aral Sea Basin written by M.G. Bos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The irrigated area in the Aral Sea basin totals about 7. 5 million hectare. Part of the water supplied to this area is consumed by the irrigated crop; the remainder of the supplied water drains to the groundwater basin, to downstream depressions, or back to the rivers. During its use, however, this drained part of the water accumulates salts and chemicals. The disposal of this polluted water causes a variety of (environmental) problems. If the percentage consumed water of the total water supply to an irrigated area (the so-called overall consumed ratio) can be increased, less water needs to be drained. This alleviates part of the related (environmental) problems. Further, if the overall consumed ratio for the above 7. 5 million hectare is improved, less water needs to be diverted from the rivers. Hence, more water can flow towards the Aral Sea. As mentioned above, part of the non-consumed irrigation water drains to the groundwater basin. Commonly, the natural discharge capacity of this basin is insufficient to handle this imported water. As a result, the groundwater table rises towards the land surface causing waterlogging. In (semi-)arid zones this waterlogging triggers a soil salinity problem resulting to a significant reduction in crop yields. The artificial increase of the discharge capacity, and lowering of the groundwater table, solves the soil salinity problem.
