Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of jobs across Europe remains a key economic and social challenge for the EU. Given the negative impact of the financial crisis on European citizens, the EU’s ability to promote effective job creation policies will be viewed as a major success of the wider integration process. In this context, a new approach is required to provide a growth-based strategy for creating employment across Europe. What is required is an achievable strategy based on the realities of modern EU labour markets. This research, based on an analysis of six member states, provides a set of recommendations designed to reflect the current characteristics of the EU labour market. This research concludes that (1) EU employment policies should be simplified and better co-ordinated; (2) Clearly defined action s should be introduced to further improve labour mobility; (3) The focus of policymaking should be switched from combatting unemployment to creating jobs; and (4) It is possible to finance the recovery by bridging the gap between investment and reform.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first systematic attempt to examine one of the biggest challenges facing universities and society in the 21st century: how do we create opportunities to allow people from all social backgrounds to benefit from higher education? It examines how policymakers, higher education institutions and civil society organisations are meeting this challenge across the globe. Each chapter focuses on one of 12 countries, including the economically powerful US and Germany, developing nations from Africa and South America and the new higher education 'superpowers' of China and India. Access to Higher Education shows that across these different nations inequalities in higher education participation are common, but their nature differs. It argues for a new, 'nationhood' based approach to understanding why these differences exist.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "SHITHOLE COUNTRIES": THE SHOCKING TRUTH WHICH SHOULD HAVE SERVED AS A LESSON During an Oval Office meeting, the U.S President grew frustrated with lawmakers. It was due to the discussion revolving around protecting immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador, and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal. As a result, the President aired out remarks that have since generated global attention. Inviting people to accept the truth, this book depicts scenarios which made the author to confirm that his country, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as well as other African countries and beyond, was actually a "shithole country". The book further discusses systems turning African countries into shitholes and looks if developed country could be called shithole countries as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Selected Issues paper identifies episodes of large and sustained current account surpluses in advanced economies (AEs) and compares Germany’s ongoing surplus with those episodes. In doing so, the paper aims to put Germany’s external position in a historical and cross-country context drawing from 55 years of data across 20 AEs. The comparison shows that the real growth of all domestic demand components, particularly of private investment, was remarkably weak during the latest sustained surplus episode in Germany in comparison with both “normal times” and other AE surplus episodes. Neither Germany’s nor a typical AE surplus episode has been accompanied by visible, broad-based competitiveness or terms of trade gains.

Book excerpt: The present volume How Can India Become a Superpower by 2047: A Vision is primarily a vision document of India that tells the readers - especially the students and youths - about the mantras for making India a country with a very high human development index. The sole aim of this sacred book is to ignite young minds to turn their dreams into determination for national growth and development through personal skill and capacity development. This book highlights India’s rich and glorious history, culture, trade & commerce, politics, geography, demography, and economy on one hand, and religion, spirituality, philosophy, gender, education, health, climate action, and science & technology, on the other hand. What are India’s present strengths? What more India can learn from the USA, China, Japan, Germany, and Israel has been discussed in this book. Also, the author has explored the perceptions of some great social, political, and spiritual leaders of the world about India and its superiority in science, technology, mathematics, spirituality, culture, and beauty. Moreover, India’s vibrant foreign policy and robust public policies since independence with a special focus on the Modi Government have been examined minutely. The most significant parts of this volume are to tell the readers about how India can be a developed country, how India should run in the next quarter century, and how India can achieve a $25 trillion economy by 2047. Finally, this book traces out some existing challenges and concludes with reasonable and scientific recommendations for the holistic development of India.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book analyses the emerging centre-periphery divisions within the European Union which result from the unprecedented conditions created by the 2008-09 global financial crisis and the subsequent Eurozone sovereign debt crisis. The multiple layers of policy coordination which emerged in response to the crisis have initiated a process by which the EU is increasingly divided in terms of the level of vertical integration between the Eurozone core group and differentiated peripheries amongst the outsiders. At the same time the sovereign debt crisis has created a periphery of predominantly Southern European countries within the Eurozone that became dependent on external financial support from the other member states. The contributions in this book critically examine various aspects of the emerging internal post-crisis constellation of the EU. The main focus lies on national and supranational governance issues, national dynamics and dynamics in the Eurozone core as well as in the periphery. This book was originally published as a special issue of Perspectives on European Politics and Society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book strengthens our understanding of Indian manufacturing. It argues that structural transformation should be guided by the given factor endowments. The book undertakes detailed empirical scrutiny to provide inputs for guiding the future industrial policy in India. The book recognises the differential structure of organised and unorganised manufacturing with their distinguished response to the use of labour and capital. The analytical framework consists of an economy-wide approach and structural relationships at the industry level. The underlying sectoral interdependence highlights the job creation potential of domestic manufacturing, which spreads into the non-manufacturing sectors through the essential accounting of the embodied effects. The impact of import utilisations underscores the leakages in the domestic economy in terms of the employment forgone and capital use, thereby highlighting the need to strengthen domestic production. The book clearly identifies the labour- and capital-intensive categories of manufacturing for empirical investigations. A comprehensive read on labour and capital use in Indian manufacturing, this book in the series Sustainable Industrial Development will appeal to scholars and researchers of economics, applied industrial economics, Indian economy, and business studies. It will also be of interest to professionals and practitioners in policy circles and research think tanks.

Book excerpt: Economic challenges in developing Asian countries have become more complex: urban populations are growing at great cost to the environment, climate change has increased risks of natural disasters, and income gaps within and between developing countries are widening. These factors threaten the sustainable growth and development of urban areas, the drivers of Asia's economy. A strategic approach for inclusive growth is needed. The City Cluster Economic Development approach provides a strategic framework and a set of analytical tools, which governments, businesses, and communities can use to support the inclusive and sustainable development of competitive urban economies in Asia. Said approach was developed and tested by the Asian Development Bank to improve the basis for integrated planning and development of urban regions in Asia and the Pacific. It also elps urban managers and other city stakeholders identify action plans and determine priority investment areas.

Book excerpt: Women make up a little over half of the world’s population, but their contribution to measured economic activity and growth is far below its potential. Despite significant progress in recent decades, labor markets across the world remain divided along gender lines, and progress toward gender equality seems to have stalled. The challenges of growth, job creation, and inclusion are closely intertwined. This volume brings together key research by IMF economists on issues related to gender and macroeconomics. In addition to providing policy prescriptions and case studies from IMF member countries, the chapters also look at the gender gap from an economic point of view.
