Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this memoir, the son of Nazi Germany’s foreign minister looks back on his life, examining their relationship and his father’s role in World War II. On 16 October 1946, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Hitler’s wartime Foreign Minister, was executed at Nuremberg, convicted on four counts including deliberately planning a war of aggression and war crimes. In this first English language edition of his memoirs, Rudolf von Ribbentrop candidly describes his relationship with his father when he was the German Ambassador in London and during the war years. Von Ribbentrop was an often-isolated figure among the Nazi elite. In his final report from London, von Ribbentrop informed Hitler that he was convinced Great Britain would fight for its position in the world. He went on to play a key role forging the short-lived pact with Stalin’s Soviet Union. Far from being uncritical, the author sets out to paint an objective picture of his father’s role. His unique position sheds light on the unfolding dramatic events leading up to, and then the execution of, the Second World war. While the author briefly describes his personal experiences including his war service with the SS, it is the insight this work provides into top level decision making at the heart of the Third Reich that will appeal most to both historians and laymen.

Book excerpt: This book is about a life in the meat business. It contains a little about a lot. It has some personal history, an early personal tragedy, it’s a little emotional, contains a lot of frustrations and a lot of honesty. There are a few interesting stories, a lot of valuable lessons and some guidance on how to create worksheets to collect and sort data. It contains an interesting conflict between a subordinate and a superior that doesn’t end well for one of them. The purpose of this book is to give some insight into a business that most people really don’t know anything about. Until the 1980’s primarily a blue-collar business run by some smart men grinding out profits by the pennies. A business that wasn’t and still isn’t for everyone. Only a select group of people who can get up every day knowing there is no finish line and can withstand an ever-changing environment, vicious competition that doesn’t always play by the rules, ever changing markets that can change in the blink of an eye and the pressure to continually “meat” the bottom line until you say, I had enough. After reading this book my hope is that you walk away from it with an understanding of the behind the scenes work that goes into getting that steak you see under the glass at your local butcher shop or supermarket and all those delicious deli meats and salads at your favorite deli. That you can takeaway an idea, learn something from one of the lessons that you can use to help with your everyday routine or use to help you work better with your teams and customers. If nothing else, you enjoyed reading it and it helped you relax and get a few smiles trying to visualize me trying to stick the devils head out the porthole plane window. Over a 55 plus year career I can break it down by using Jack Welch’s 20-70-10 rule. 20% learning, 70% doing and 10% BS.

There is no book in English about the wartime Berlin ‘salon’ run by Kitty Schmidt under the secret control of Reinhard Heydrich, one of the architects of the Final Solution. "Salon Kitty" was the most notorious brothel in the decadent Berlin of the Weimar Republic - the city of "Cabaret." But after the Nazis took power, it became something more dangerous: a spying center with every room wired for sound, staffed by female agents specially selected by the SS to coax secrets from their VIP clients. Masterminded by Reinhard Heydrich, the spymaster whom Hitler himself called "the man with the iron heart," the exclusive establishment turned listening post was patronized by the Nazi leaders themselves, not knowing that hidden ears were listening. The Madam and the Spymaster reveals the sensational true story of this forgotten part of espionage history. The deep research undertaken by Nigel Jones, Urs Brunner and Dr Julia Schrammel sheds new light on Nazi methods of control and coercion, and the way sex was abused for their own perverse purposes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a serious, yet humorous, chronological account of Jim Diehl’s search for his true family, and the many turns along that path he encountered. Growing up, there were no baby books or relatives to answer his questions about who he was. His earliest memory is growing up with his brother, Steve, on a small farm in Milton, West Virginia, in the foster care of the Lewis family. During those years, he was known as Jimmy Ying. At the beginning of 1956, the brothers were told they were going on a visit with their “social lady,” Mrs. Morgan. On a cold and very snowy January 11th morning, they were bundled up and sent off before being told they were going to visit some very nice people. When asked if they’d like to stay or just visit with these new nice people, the author immediately said he wanted to stay, but his brother hesitantly said, “just visit.” Join the author as he looks back at what it was like to grow up as a ward of the state and how he finally answered that question about who he is in His Grace IS Sufficient. “His Grace is Sufficient” is a beautiful love story of God demonstrating His enduring love, perfect timing, and deep, abiding intimacy through the life of one man. This creative expression is not just Jim’s story - it is yours. Read and remember your life story and how God will “go out of His way” to complete the circle and provide every human being a family and a place to call home.” William D. Nicholson II, Ph.D. President Connie Maxwell Children’s Home Since coming to South Carolina I have known Jim Diehl as a Director of Missions and passionate church musician. After reading “His Grace IS Sufficient”, I now know him as a trophy of God’s grace. As you read his story, you will shed tears...first of sadness, but then of joy. This book is a powerful reminder of the goodness and grace of God, and that He DOES take care of “the least of these.” Dr. Gary Hollingsworth, Executive Director-Treasurer, SC Baptist Convention

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Robb lived with an unspoken fear that what he passed off as 'not being good in the mornings' was something darker: a black dog whose daily visit lasted longer as the years passed. Worried about stigmas and letting people down, he avoided confronting the problem for four decades, the adrenaline of high-pressure and high profile jobs offering the ideal antidote. Ultimately, realising his ambitions meant having to face up to this very private demon. Andrew Robb’s battle with the black dog has touched a chord with many Australians. His memoir explores the challenges of managing depression, political ambition and life in the Liberal Party. Andrew Robb’s career has been devoted to the Liberal cause—as Federal Director of the Liberal Party, as Executive Director of the National Farmers Federation, during seven years in the Packer business empire, and now in parliamentary politics. His memoirs document the private struggle and the public life of the Liberal Party's chief political strategist. It offers readers an insight into one man's lifelong battle with a private demon amidst the drama and tumult of contemporary Australian politics.

Book excerpt: There have been Lutheran schools in Australia for more than 170 years. This book examines the second 80 years of that history through a series of biographies of the pathfinders, those educational leaders who, on the basis of a rich tradition which had suffered some reversals, forged new directions for Lutheran schooling in the twentieth century. The eight profiles in this book not only cover the broad sweep of Lutheran educational history from 1919 to 1999, but also explore the stories of people who were leading players in its development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1950, at the age of twenty-four, William Clark Styron, Jr., wrote to his mentor, Professor William Blackburn of Duke University. The young writer was struggling with his first novel, Lie Down in Darkness, and he was nervous about whether his “strain and toil” would amount to anything. “When I mature and broaden,” Styron told Blackburn, “I expect to use the language on as exalted and elevated a level as I can sustain. I believe that a writer should accommodate language to his own peculiar personality, and mine wants to use great words, evocative words, when the situation demands them.” In February 1952, Styron was awarded the Prix de Rome of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which crowned him a literary star. In Europe, Styron met and married Rose Burgunder, and found himself immersed in a new generation of expatriate writers. His relationships with George Plimpton and Peter Matthiessen culminated in Styron introducing the debut issue of The Paris Review. Literary critic Alfred Kazin described him as one of the postwar “super-egotists” who helped transform American letters. His controversial The Confessions of Nat Turner won the 1968 Pulitzer Prize, while Sophie’s Choice was awarded the 1980 National Book Award, and Darkness Visible, Styron’s groundbreaking recounting of his ordeal with depression, was not only a literary triumph, but became a landmark in the field. Part and parcel of Styron’s literary ascendance were his friendships with Norman Mailer, James Baldwin, John and Jackie Kennedy, Arthur Miller, James Jones, Carlos Fuentes, Wallace Stegner, Robert Penn Warren, Philip Roth, C. Vann Woodward, and many of the other leading writers and intellectuals of the second half of the twentieth century. This incredible volume takes readers on an American journey from FDR to George W. Bush through the trenchant observations of one of the country’s greatest writers. Not only will readers take pleasure in William Styron’s correspondence with and commentary about the people and events that made the past century such a momentous and transformative time, they will also share the writer’s private meditations on the very art of writing. Advance praise for Selected Letters of William Styron “I first encountered Bill Styron when, at twenty, I read The Confessions of Nat Turner. Hillary and I became friends with Bill and Rose early in my presidency, but I continued to read him, fascinated by the man and his work, his triumphs and troubles, the brilliant lights and dark corners of his amazing mind. These letters, carefully and lovingly selected by Rose, offer real insight into both the great writer and the good man.”—President Bill Clinton “The Bill Styron revealed in these letters is altogether the Bill Styron who was a dear friend and esteemed colleague to me for close to fifty years. The humor, the generosity, the loyalty, the self-awareness, the commitment to literature, the openness, the candor about matters closest to him—all are on display in this superb selection of his correspondence. The directness in the artful sentences is such that I felt his beguiling presence all the while that I was enjoying one letter after another.”—Philip Roth “Bill Styron’s letters were never envisioned, far less composed, as part of the Styron oeuvre, yet that is what they turn out to be. Brilliant, passionate, eloquent, insightful, moving, dirty-minded, indignant, and hilarious, they accumulate power in the reading, becoming in themselves a work of literature.”—Peter Matthiessen
