Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the physical and psychological benefits of youth participating in sport are evident, the increasing professionalization and specialization of youth sport, primarily by coaches and parents, are changing the culture of youth sport and causing it to erode the ideal mantra: “It’s all about the kids.” In Best Practice for Youth Sport, readers will gain an appreciation of an array of issues regarding youth sport. This research-based text is presented in a practical manner, with examples from current events that foster readers’ interest and class discussion. The content is based on the principle of developmentally appropriate practice (DAP), which can be defined as engaging in decisions, behaviors, and policies that meet the physical, psychological, and social needs of children and youth based on their ages and maturational levels. This groundbreaking resource covers a breadth of topics, including bone development, burnout, gender and racial stereotypes, injuries, motor behavior, and parental pressures. Written by Robin S. Vealey and Melissa A. Chase, the 16 chapters of Best Practice for Youth Sport are divided into four parts. Part I, Youth Sport Basics, provides readers with the fundamental knowledge and background related to the history, evolution, and organization of youth sport. Part II, Maturation and Readiness for Youth Sport Participants, is the core of understanding how and why youth sport is different from adult sport. This part details why it is important to know when youth are ready to learn and compete. Part III, Intensity of Participation in Youth Sport, examines the appropriateness of physical and psychological intensity at various developmental stages and the potential ramifications of overtraining, overspecialization, overstress, and overuse. The text concludes with part IV, Social Considerations in Youth Sport, which examines how youth sport coaches and parents can help create a supportive social environment so that children can maximize the enjoyment and benefits from youth sport. In addition to 14 appendixes, activities, glossaries, study questions, and other resources that appear in Best Practice for Youth Sport, the textbook is enhanced with instructor ancillaries: a test package, image bank, and instructor guide that features a syllabus, additional study questions and learning activities, tips on teaching difficult concepts, and additional readings and resources. These specialized resources ensure that instructors will be ready for each class session with engaging materials. Ancillaries are free to course adopters and available at www.HumanKinetics.com/BestPracticeForYouthSport. Best Practice for Youth Sport provides readers with knowledge of sport science concerning youth sport and engages them through the use of anecdotes, activities, case studies, and practical strategies. Armed with the knowledge from this text, students, coaches, parents, administrators, and others will be able to become active agents of social change in structuring and enhancing youth sport programs to meet the unique developmental needs of children, making the programs athlete centered rather than adult centered so that they truly are all about the kids.

His excellence over four decades is second to none, and he offers the secret to his success in this book. He suggests that coaches do not make players better; only players make players better. So then, what is the job of the coach? According to Dr. Martin, a coach's job is to create an environment where the players can get better (the coaching) and want to get better (the players' motivation). A good coach creates an environment that is motivating, challenging, and fun! This book is a road map all coaches can follow to create an environment that is sustainable over time. In nine lessons, Dr. Martin presents the steps he uses to create a winning team environment. He believes that leaders create the culture, the culture determines acceptable behaviors, and these behaviors are necessary to sustain the winning culture.

It has lots of useful templates, checklists, anecdotes, and practical advice to ensure your project executes as smoothly as possible.” —Alexey Gerasimov, CTO, My Event Guru, Inc. While there are numerous project management books on the market and a number on business processes and initiatives, there has been a lack of comprehensive guides to successfully manage business process improvement (BPI) projects, until now. BPI projects are some of the most difficult and challenging to manage. Improving results for the business is not an easy task! Doing so requires understanding the vision and long-term goals of an organization. It also requires the ability to engage stakeholders and manage change. Best Practices for Managing BPI Projects is a guide for project managers who want to improve how they manage BPI projects. Using a simple step-by-step, six-phase approach, project managers and others involved in BPI initiatives will increase their confidence and their effectiveness in managing the complexities of business process improvement projects. Special focus is given to the necessary leadership skills required to be successful in driving change by improving processes within an organization to improve business results.

Book excerpt: The industry of executive and leadership coaching has grown over the past decade, becoming an integral part of many leadership and executive training and development initiatives globally. As a result, research focusing on coaches in Asia and Europe may uncover useful best practices that could inform the field. Such knowledge would enable coaches to better understand how to work better with their client-leaders and can also inform and develop coaching practice and research. The purpose of our qualitative study was to understand, through the interviews of 12 practicing coaches residing in Asia and 19 practicing coaches residing in Europe, what their best practices are in one-to-one coaching engagements. Ten best practices from the coaches in Asia and six best practices from coaches in Europe emerged. Each best practice is discussed as well as limitations, future research, and implications from the findings of our study.
