Book Synopsis Urban Dreams, Rural Commonwealth by : Paul Musselwhite
Download or read book Urban Dreams, Rural Commonwealth written by Paul Musselwhite and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English settlers who staked their claims in the Chesapeake Bay were drawn to it for a variety of reasons. Some sought wealth from the land, while others saw it as a place of trade, a political experiment, or a potential spiritual sanctuary. But like other European colonizers in the Americas, they all aspired to found, organize, and maintain functioning towns—an aspiration that met with varying degrees of success, but mostly failure. Yet this failure became critical to the economy and society that did arise there. As Urban Dreams, Rural Commonwealth reveals, the agrarian plantation society that eventually sprang up around the Chesapeake Bay was not preordained—rather, it was the necessary product of failed attempts to build cities. Paul Musselwhite details the unsuccessful urban development that defined the region from the seventeenth century through the Civil War, showing how places like Jamestown and Annapolis—despite their small size—were the products of ambitious and cutting-edge experiments in urbanization comparable to those in the largest port cities of the Atlantic world. These experiments, though, stoked ongoing debate about commerce, taxation, and self-government. Chesapeake planters responded to this debate by reinforcing the political, economic, and cultural authority of their private plantation estates, with profound consequences for the region’s laborers and the political ideology of the southern United States. As Musselwhite makes clear, the antebellum economy around this well-known waterway was built not in the absence of cities, but upon their aspirational wreckage.
Book Synopsis The World Dream Book by : Sarvananda Bluestone
Download or read book The World Dream Book written by Sarvananda Bluestone and published by Inner Traditions / Bear & Co. This book was released on 2002-12 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique self-help guide to dream interpretation using techniques and icons from cultures around the world. • Challenges the assumption that all symbols universally signify the same thing to all dreamers. • Includes numerous stories, games, and exercises for inducing, recalling, interpreting, and utilizing dreams. • Extends beyond Jung and Freud to include dream theory from numerous world cultures, including the Temiar of Malaya, the African Ibans, the Lepchka of the Himalayas, and the Ute of North America. Dreaming can be used as a tool for understanding our own consciousness, enhancing creativity, receiving visions, conquering fears, interpreting recent events, healing the body, and evolving the soul. Tapping into the vast dreaming experiences and lore of the world's cultures--from the Siwa people of the Libyan desert to the Naskapi Indians of Labrador--Sarvananda Bluestone challenges the assumption that all symbols universally signify the same thing to all dreamers. The World Dream Book encourages readers to develop their own, personalized symbols for understanding their consciousness and provides a series of stories, multicultural techniques, and games to help them do so. Playful explorations, such as the aboriginal "Sipping the Water of the Moon," teach how to induce, recall, interpret, and utilize the power of dreams. Readers will discover how a stone under a pillow can help us remember a dream and will explore their own dormant artist and writer as they reclaim the power of their sleeping consciousness. Sarvananda Bluestone applies his uniquely engaging style to demonstrate that, with a few simple tools, everybody has the capacity to unleash their full dreaming potential.

He and Margaret Wieczorek decided to take their chances on a war time marriage. Joe also decided to enlist in the Naval Reserve. For a while things were great for the newly weds but after less than nine months of marriage Joe got his orders. He was on his way to duty in Bermuda. During the fifteen months he was stationed there Joe and Marge exchanged over 500 letters. These letters reveal the great love and affection they had for each other despite the miles that separated them. They show their faith in God and country. And the letters are a time capsule of what America was like in 1943 and 1944. Find out about Nicklelodeon dances, the Lux Radio Theater, hit movies, shoe stamps, The Inner Sanctum, jitterbugging, Camp Grant, knitten for Britain, Hopalong Cassidy and all the hot spots in Rockford, Illinois. Book Reviews Phelps Creates Family Treasure A box of letters stored away since 1945 resurfaced 60 years later in 2005. Letters written back and forth between James’s parents in 1943 and 1944. James made the decision to devote time to preserving this time in his parent’s history. As James began to delve further into the readings, he realized the beauty in the language and his parent’s relationship. He also learned much of the social history as revealed by his mother’s writing. His mother’s letters provide a snapshot of life in the early 1940’s. For those with a penchant for history, for the stories behind the people, and for those appreciative of beautiful and telling letter writing, this may be the book for you. Sarah Johnson Editor/Publisher of FYI NORTHWOODS Presque Isle, Wisconsin Pick up this book for a fascinating journey to the America of yesterday, as seen through the eyes of real-life heroes who weren’t seeking special recognition. They just tried the best they could, meeting their responsibilities in everyday life, overseas and on the home front. By the time you finish this book, you’ll feel like they’re old friends. Not only is this unique book a very interesting read, it is also a time capsule that contains some mementoes of an era that is long gone but part of our history. Some readers may still have grandparents who recall having lived during this era; for them it will be like a walk down memory lane. For others, who are too young to recall it personally, it is a glimpse into a time that is viewed through old photographs – almost surreal but at once real and honest. Susan Johnson Copy Editor of The Rock River Times in Rockford, Illinois Rockford man compiles parents’ WWII correspondence in a book. Rockford’s James S. Go Section of the Rockford Register Star READERS’ COMMENTS After reading every letter, I, if no other reader, have come to know Joe and Marge quite well. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you right away how much I admire your entirely worthwhile effort in transcribing these expressions of your parent’s love and affection, faith and longing. Did you ever consider “Oceans of love” as a subtitle? We’ve still not been by Crossways (Joe’s cottage in Bermuda) at a time when we weren’t rushing, but Joe’s many descriptions will be an inspiration next time the opportunity arises to take a couple of pictures and maybe knock on the door. Download or read book Bermuda Triangle written by A.K. Seals and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bermuda Triangle's author has always been fascinated with the region's meteorological forecast. The triangular shape of the area and its mysterious history of vanishing modes of transportation was the catalyst of the book's title. But what truly sparked the idea of this title was the female reproductive area. The triangular shape of women's reproductive area could be looked at in a number of ways: The ovaries to the depth of the uterus and down to the cervix. Or the breasts to the genitalia. This is the area where human life develops but also holds an energy of life outside of the physical growth of another person. This context of energy is creation, contributions, and interacting with others. We all encounter many obstacles in our lifetime. How do we address these challenges? Bermuda Triangle is a story of dozens of women and how their particular dilemma comes to a resolve. Their age range varies across the spectrum. Each situation has a sense of familiarity, something anyone could relate to. We all live our lives according to what we've experienced over time. Sometimes it works out in our best interest and other times it does not. Even when it does not, that doesn't mean a lesson was not learned. Bermuda Triangle wants its readers' to be reminded that we are all in this together, the travels of life.
