Ob dieser Eindruck vornehmlich durch mediale Aufmerksamkeit und Überdramatisierung nach dem Leitbild „only bad news is good news“ entsteht, oder aber, ob diese Wahrnehmung einer real wahrnehmbaren Veränderung entspricht, ist trotz umfangreicher statistischer Nachforschung strittig. Neben der Frage nach der Zunahme von Jugendgewalt und deren vermeintliche Verrohung, wird in der öffentlichen Debatte ebenso stark diskutiert, ob insbesondere von türkischstämmigen und arabischen Jugendliche in Deutschland ein höheres Gewaltpotential ausgeht, als dies beispielsweise von deutschen Jugendlichen der Fall ist. Das Aufwerfen einer solchen Frage seitens deutscher Bürger wird oftmals als Anzeichen für Ausländerfeindlichkeit interpretiert, was wohlmöglich auf die NS- Vergangenheit und dessen „Erbschuld“ zurückzuführen ist. Dennoch weist diese Frage ihre Berechtigung auf; insbesondere dann, wenn Fälle bekannt werden, in denen diverse staatliche Institutionen Angst vor arabischen Großfamilien entwickeln und ihnen deshalb keine Sanktionen für gewisse Taten erteilen, oder aber wenn Statistiken der Berliner Staatsanwaltschaft darlegen, dass ein Großteil der Berliner Intensivtäter türkischer oder arabischer Herkunft ist. Es drängt sich die Frage auf, woher die einseitige Belastung der größtenteils muslimischen Jugendlichen in Berlin rührt. Eine Antwort lässt sich in den Lebens- und Erziehungsumständen in Abgrenzung zu anderen Ethnien suchen. Es ist weiterhin von Interesse, zu überprüfen, ob die Gewaltbereitschaft der Jugendlichen in Deutschland tatsächlich gestiegen ist, oder ob dieser Eindruck lediglich medial vermittelt wird und keinerlei empirischen Nachweise vorliegen.

In this arresting book, Paul Sniderman and Louk Hagendoorn demonstrate that there are deep conflicts of values in the Netherlands. In the eyes of the Dutch, for example, Muslims oppress women, treating them as inferior to men. In the eyes of Muslim immigrants, Western Europeans deny women the respect they deserve. Western Europe has become a cultural conflict zone. Two ways of life are colliding. Sniderman and Hagendoorn show how identity politics contributed to this crisis. The very policies meant to persuade majority and minority that they are part of the same society strengthened their view that they belong to different societies.
