Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Book excerpt: A pioneer woman searches for a happier life in this dramatic debut historical romance by the New York Times bestselling author of the Honey Creek novels. Texas Ranger Josh Weston is a stranger to Bethanie Lane—and her only chance to escape from her lecherous uncle’s grasp. Without hesitating, she strikes a deal with the rugged lawman to take her with him when he leaves San Antonio. And on the journey to his family’s ranch near Fort Worth, they forge a bond as powerful as it is unexpected. When Bethanie’s dream of a future with Josh falls apart, she’s forced to make a harrowing choice. Yet through every danger and revelation, one thing remains—a love worth living and dying for . . . Praise for Beneath the Texas Sky “Thomas managed quite creatively to follow the life of a woman who embodied all the characteristics of a survivor and yet still made her compassionate and vulnerable—quite a dichotomy. This is a story rich in details that draws you in from the first page and manages to create quite a few surprises along the way.” —Fresh Fiction

Try the fragrant pink and white flowers of Korean spice viburnum. Love the drama of canna but need something hardier? Try the bold foliage of variegated fleece flower. Book excerpt: About the Book In the Appalachian foothills, Judy and her three young boys are left to fend for themselves while her husband leaves for work on a sheep ranch out west. Life isn’t easy in the Hawkins house during Ken’s absence, and Judy struggles to survive and provide for her sons, helped only occasionally by her brother-in-law, who also happens to be her former lover. Stark necessity and a determination to keep her family alive and safe forces Judy to make unorthodox —and often immoral—decisions. And times become increasingly difficult as her boys encounter violence, death, alcoholism and tobacco abuse as they come of age in the isolation of the Appalachia foothills in the 1950s. About the Author Bill Lawson grew up in an impoverished family of fourteen in the rural Appalachians of Virginia in the 1950s and ‘60s. He worked his way to a bachelor’s degree in education and taught English in Florida before joining the Air Force in 1970, where he became trained as a medical technologist. In the years that followed, he settled in the Spokane, Washington, area and worked for a number of hospitals. He enrolled in the University of Washington Physician Assistant Program and worked as a family practice PA until his retirement in 2017. He now enjoys camping, hiking, fishing, reading, and writing fiction based on his experiences growing up in the Appalachians. He still resides in Spokane with his wife, Stephanie, who he refers to as the center of his universe.
